In Split Vote, Cobb Denies Student Housing Tower

The Cobb Board of Commissioners voted 3-2 to deny Landmark Properties' proposal for a five-story student housing building near Kennesaw State University. The project, named The Standard, was to include 191 units and 643 bedrooms. Despite reducing the number of beds from 761 to 643 to address density concerns, the proposal faced opposition due to potential impacts on traffic, property values, and increased density. Chair Lisa Cupid and Commissioner Monique Sheffield opposed the denial, citing the need for student housing and the university's contribution to the community. Concerns were raised about the lack of student and parent voices in discussions, and the potential for increased crime was debated. The project was seen as a solution to the housing shortage for students, but ultimately, the board decided the location was unsuitable. Commissioner Jerica Richardson led the motion to deny, emphasizing unresolved issues related to property value and traffic.
