SF Giants Outright Thairo Estrada; Blake Snell, Matt Chapman Prove Their Worth in Win vs. Marlins

The San Francisco Giants made headlines the other day, placing Thairo Estrada, Taylor Rogers, and Tyler Matzek on irrevocable waivers. This meant that any team could claim any of those players, and they'd immediately no longer be members of the SF Giants. Yesterday, however, the Giants announced that they'd outrighted Estrada to Triple-A Sacramento, meaning that he went unclaimed and is now off the 40-man roster. Matzek went unclaimed and was placed on unconditional release waivers. No announcement was made on Rogers, which likely means he went unclaimed and will remain on the Giants roster. Rogers is under contract for $12 million next year.

Matt Chapman delivered a huge three-run double with two outs and two strikes in the eighth inning as the Giants beat the Marlins 3-1. Up to that point, it has been another frustrating night for the SF Giants' offense, but Chapman's hit was, in the words of Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow, "therapeutic." Chapman's big hit followed up another brilliant outing by Blake Snell, who, like Chapman, is all but certain to opt out and re-test the market this coming offseason.

Speaking of the offseason, MLB Trade Rumors posted a late August free-agent power rankings list, and Snell and Chapman rank prominently. It will be interesting so see what the Giants do with both, and also in the middle infield with Estrada seemingly no longer in their plans. It's worth noting that the Giants recalled Brett Wisely, not Marco Luciano, in place of the outrighted Estrada. It's also worth noting that the San Francisco Giants' 40-man roster stands at 38, meaning they can add two players, and that active rosters expand from 26 to 28 on Sunday due to the calendar flipping to September.
