The Philadelphia High School for Girls, better known as Girls High, is partnering with Mural Arts Philadelphia to celebrate the school’s 175th birthday with a bang.

“Spring has got some things,” Mural Arts’ Medina Oyefusi says whimsically, as she previews the unveiling of a new mural at Girls High, the oldest single-sex public school in the country.

In operation for 175 years, the institution has grown a long list of notable alumni. One of the best-known is Grammy Award-winning neo soul singer and actress Jill Scott.

Scott grew up in North Philadelphia and attended Temple University, majoring in education, after graduating from Girls High in 1989.

Oyefusi says there’s no better way to mark the 175-year milestone than by honoring one of the school’s most beloved success stories in a new mural.
