Are you interested in exploring various cutures or learning about lakes? Carol Roberts, head of youth services at Troy Public Library, recommends four new books on these topics. For Indigenous Peoples' Month, she suggests "Find Her" (2024), a novel by Ginger Reno about a young Cherokee girl's search for her missing mother, with information at the end about the high number of missing indigenous women and girls. "Where the Dark Stands Still" (2024), a young adult novel about a girl falling in love with a demon, is based on traditional Polish stories. "Daughters of the Lamp" (2024), by Nedda Lewers, is full of Arabian myth and mystery in a tale of a girl from Queens going to a wedding in Egypt, where she learns she is descended from Ali Baba, and next in line to guard his treasures. Switching to nonfiction, "Spooky Lakes: 25 Strange and Mysterious Lakes that Dot Our Planet" (2024) by Geo Rutherford presents factual information about lakes that are indeed strange, such as how lakes turn underwater bodies into soap. Yep, soap. For more info, visit www.thetroylibrary.org. Produced by Brea Barthel for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.
