like God’s Word for Today 10 Jul, 2024 23 And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” 24 And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, “Then who can be saved?” 27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” 28 Peter began to say to him, “See, we have left everything and followed you.” 29 Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” -Mark 10:23-31 ESV WHO CAN BE SAVED? As the rich young ruler went away, Jesus turned to His disciples. He said, “How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!” Jesus loves the rich young ruler. He recognizes his mistake. He won't give up his riches for Christ. His riches were a plague. Jesus' comment had startled the disciples. Then, Jesus addressed this difficulty through a metaphor, by saying, “Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” Jesus may mean the narrow gate in the wall of Jerusalem called a needle’s eye wherein camels could hardly pass through or an exaggeration for a literal camel to pass through a literal needle used for sewing. Whatever it is, He meant to ‘enter heaven’ is impossible for man. The disciples understood it to say, “Who then can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and answered, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” The certainty of salvation is assured and settled in the power of God. It’s not about what man can do but what God has done and is doing. Then, Peter, having heard Jesus words to the rich young ruler, said, ““See, we have left everything and followed you.” He argued that he and the others left everything for Jesus while the rich young ruler did not. They left their boats, nets, and families to follow Jesus. And Jesus acknowledged it, even commended them for it. He said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life.” Jesus concluded, “But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” Jesus has established this principle that a person who sacrifices his life for Him and the gospel will save or gain it in the end.
