What was the actual moment the US departed from its opportunity to be the shining city on a hill?
I mark the 1890s—specifically, the Spanish-American War when the US kicked Spain out of the Americas.
Why? The decision to embark on the road to empire is incommensurate with freedom at home. I understood this by instinct when I was about 12 years old.
The wars of occupation of the last 25 years were a warm-up for the main event - where the US government will be using those tools and skills against its own people.
The effort it takes to look for liberty is worth it.
