×Donna Adelson, accused of orchestrating the 2014 murder-for-hire of Florida State University law professor Dan Markel, appeared in court with her new defense team after her trial was delayed by conflict-of-interest issues. The appearance marked her first since a September postponement of the high-profile case. Accompanied by her new attorneys, former Circuit Judge Jackie Fulford and Tallahassee lawyer Josh Zelman, Adelson appeared before Leon Circuit Judge Stephen Everett. Both attorneys assured the court there were no conflicts of interest in their representation. Adelson’s previous legal team had been disqualified due to conflicts involving her son Charlie Adelson, who is serving a life sentence for organizing the murder. Fulford and Zelman took over the case in October and have begun addressing the substantial legal hurdles that come with such a transition. Fulford, drawing on her experience as a circuit judge and interim state attorney, expressed confidence in their ability to prepare for the trial despite limited access to discovery materials. “The state attorney’s office has agreed to provide us with electronic copies of all deposition transcripts,” Zelman noted. Adelson, who appeared in a purple jail jumpsuit and spoke only to her attorneys, faces charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation. Prosecutors allege she hired hitmen through her son Charlie Adelson to kill Dan Markel during a contentious custody dispute involving her grandchildren. During the hearing, Fulford proposed a trial window between June 16 and July 2, noting that all parties involved, including witnesses, could be available during that time. Judge Everett emphasized the importance of setting a firm trial date, citing the logistical complexities of moving prisoners and ensuring the presence of witnesses. “When that trial date is set, it is going to be firm,” he stated. The court set the next case management conference for February 11, when discovery is expected to be completed and deadlines for trial preparation finalized. Local attorney Don Pumphrey commented on the challenges of picking up a case at this stage, likening it to “painting in the blind.” However, he acknowledged the strengths of the new legal team, describing Fulford as a “strategist” and a strong choice for the defense. The case remains one of significant public interest, with Adelson being one of five individuals arrested in connection with Markel’s murder. Her son Charlie Adelson and three others are already serving prison sentences, leaving her as the final defendant to face trial. Judge Everett also addressed any potential conflicts arising from Fulford’s prior judicial role presiding over Markel probate matters. After reviewing the matter, he found no issues that would interfere with her representation. The court’s focus now shifts to ensuring all materials are handed over and preparations are completed in time for the June trial window, bringing the case closer to resolution after a decade of legal battles and public scrutiny. #DonnaAdelson #DanMarkel #Tallahassee #TrueCrime #MurderTrial Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? 1 Charlie Adelson Seeks Retrial in Dan Markel Murder Case Due to Alleged Conflict of Interest 14:20

14:20Charlie Adelson, convicted of orchestrating the murder of FSU Law Professor Dan Markel, is seeking a retrial due to a claim of unfair legal representation. His new appellate attorney, Michael Ufferman, filed a motion with the First District Court of Appeals requesting that the case be sent back to the lower court. Ufferman argues that a conflict of interest involving Adelson’s former attorney violated his client’s 6th Amendment rights. According to the motion, Ufferman claims that Adelson’s former defense attorney, Dan Raushbaum, had a conflicting role during the trial, as he was simultaneously representing Charlie Adelson’s mother, Donna Adelson, since 2022. This overlapping representation began prior to Charlie’s arrest. Donna Adelson is an alleged co-conspirator in the 2014 murder-for-hire plot that resulted in Markel’s death. Prosecutors allege that Charlie hired hitmen to carry out the killing of his former brother-in-law amid a contentious custody dispute involving Charlie’s sister, Wendi Adelson. The conflict of interest, Ufferman argues, stems from Raushbaum’s representation of both Charlie and Donna Adelson. Florida criminal defense attorney Don Pumphrey reacted strongly to the development, calling it a “plot twist.” “He represented them both,” Pumphrey explained. “He automatically has the potential for a divided loyalty, but after Charlie Adelson is arrested and continued representation, that creates an actual conflict of interest.” This alleged conflict was significant enough, according to Ufferman, to warrant a retrial. He noted that Donna Adelson had initially been placed on the defense’s witness list for Charlie’s trial in 2023 but was later removed. Ufferman contends that the removal served Donna’s interests more than Charlie’s, suggesting divided loyalties during the trial. “There are indicators that loyalty was shown to Donna Adelson during Charlie Adelson’s trial representation,” Pumphrey said, emphasizing that Raushbaum’s decision to remove Donna from the witness list could raise questions about the fairness of the defense. Ufferman believes that the conflict of interest impacted Charlie Adelson’s ability to receive a fair trial and has requested the Court of Appeals return jurisdiction to the lower court. If granted, a lower court judge would decide whether Charlie should be retried. However, Pumphrey predicts that a retrial could prove challenging for Charlie Adelson. “I think the state’s case only gets stronger, not weaker, so if he does get a new trial, I think the state will be prepared,” Pumphrey said. Donna Adelson, who is awaiting trial for her alleged role in the murder conspiracy, is set to appear in court next. As her legal battle continues, Charlie Adelson’s attempt to secure a new trial will be closely watched by those following the case. While Ufferman’s motion lays out the argument for divided loyalties, the ultimate decision rests with the appeals court and potentially a future trial court. For now, both Adelson and his mother remain central figures in a high-profile case that has drawn national attention for its shocking details and legal complexities. What happens when alleged murderers can’t even keep their own legal representation straight? In this episode of Hidden Killers with Tony Brueski, the spotlight is on the baffling chaos surrounding the Adelson family, as the trial of Donna Adelson faces a suspension due to a shocking conflict of interest. The plot thickens when Charlie Adelson, in a moment that can only be described as last-minute brilliance, refuses to sign off on his mother’s legal representation just as jury selection begins. Joined by retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke, the discussion dives deep into the bewildering mindset of the Adelsons. With a blend of incredulity and dark humor, they dissect the apparent lack of foresight and the sheer impulsiveness of these alleged masterminds of a murder-for-hire scheme. Are they simply self-serving fools caught in their own web of incompetence? Dreeke doesn’t hold back, expressing disdain for their antics while questioning whether there’s any actual strategy at play or if it’s all just an idiotic circus. As the legal drama unfolds, it begs the question: are we witnessing a tragic comedy of errors, or is there a sinister plan that’s just too dumb to believe? #DonnaAdelson #CharlieAdelson #RobinDreeke #HiddenKillers #TrueCrime #MurderForHire #FBI Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Why would a son intentionally delay his mother's day in court, right at the last minute? Could it be that Charlie is still pulling the strings from behind bars, or is something more sinister going on in the Adelson family? In this episode, we dive into the unexpected postponement of Donna Adelson’s trial—thanks to a little legal maneuver from her son Charlie, who refused to sign a waiver that would’ve allowed their shared attorney to represent them both. It's hard to tell if Donna is in control or just another puppet in Charlie’s elaborate game. Shavaun Scott, psychotherapist and author, helps us unravel the twisted family dynamics at play here. Could Donna’s husband really be completely in the dark, or was he just playing along with whatever his wife wanted? And why haven't we seen charges against Wendy and Harvey yet—are they just waiting to trip up? How much longer can they keep delaying justice? #DonnaAdelson #CharlieAdelson #WendiAdelson #TrueCrimeToday #AdelsonFamily #Psychotherapy #LegalManipulation Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? 1 Conflict of Interest Pauses Jury Selection in Donna Adelson's Murder Trial 11:41

11:41Jury selection for Donna Adelson's conspiracy and murder trial, which has drawn significant public attention, was halted when potential conflicts of interest involving her defense attorney were raised. The proceedings began with 100 potential jurors summoned to the Leon County Courthouse, but Judge Stephen Everett called for a recess to address these serious legal concerns. At the heart of the issue is attorney Daniel Rashbaum, who represents both Donna Adelson and her son, Charlie Adelson. Charlie has already been convicted in a related murder-for-hire case and is currently serving a life sentence. His involvement as a state witness in Donna’s trial complicates the defense strategy, as questions arise regarding the potential for biased representation. On the eve of jury selection, Charlie Adelson’s appellate attorneys filed a notice asserting that he was invoking his Sixth Amendment right to maintain the confidentiality of his prior communications with Rashbaum. They contend that Rashbaum should not be allowed to cross-examine Charlie, and neither should his co-counsel, Alex Morris. “Mr. Adelson would assert that his privilege, and the conflict of interest, applies to the entire defense team in Mrs. Adelson’s case, and Mr. Adelson should not be subject to cross-examination by any member of the defense team who has been tainted by Mr. Rashbaum’s knowledge and information,” said Charlie's appellate lawyers, Michael Ufferman and Laurel Cornell Niles. During the recess, Donna Adelson consulted with Adam Komisar, an independent attorney, about her options. Upon returning to court, she expressed her desire to retain Rashbaum and waived any claims regarding potential conflicts of interest. Komisar informed the judge, “She is in a position where she would not like to lose Mr. Rashbaum and is willing to give any waivers.” However, this waiver raises questions about the effectiveness of Komisar's potential cross-examination of Charlie if he is called as a witness. Komisar acknowledged that while he could not provide the same level of representation as Rashbaum, Donna preferred to move forward without delaying the trial. Judge Everett posed direct questions to Donna, ensuring she understood the implications of waiving her conflict claims. She affirmed her decision, and the judge stated he would take time to determine if her waiver was "legally sufficient." The complexities of this case extend beyond mere legal technicalities. Donna Adelson, aged 74, is the fifth defendant to face prosecution in the infamous case surrounding the murder of law professor Dan Markel in 2014. Prosecutors allege that the Adelson family sought to eliminate Markel to enable his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, to relocate to Miami with their two sons. Wendi, Donna's daughter, is a key figure in this case, as her ties to both defendants heighten the stakes involved. Alongside Assistant State Attorneys Georgia Cappleman and Sarah Kathryn Dugan, Judge Everett is tasked with navigating these intricate legal waters. As the courtroom proceedings continued, Alex Morris emphasized to the judge that he had been "walled off" from evidence related to Charlie Adelson’s case. Despite the ongoing complexities, Morris asserted that he was prepared to handle any cross-examination should Charlie testify. Assistant State Attorney Cappleman noted that while Charlie may not be called as a primary witness, the situation remains fluid and could change. Judge Everett reinforced the importance of effective representation, stating, “Your client has a right to effective representation at every single critical stage.” With about 900 potential jurors summoned for the trial, the upcoming days are critical in shaping the proceedings as Donna Adelson's fate hangs in the balance. 37:29Donna Adelson, who is facing charges in a murder-for-hire plot that led to the death of her former son-in-law, Dan Markel, is making key legal moves just weeks before her trial is set to begin. Adelson, 74, appeared in court as her defense team presented several motions designed to ensure a fair trial, which WAS scheduled to start on September 17. Markel, a Florida State University law professor, was fatally shot in his driveway in 2014. Prosecutors allege that Donna Adelson orchestrated the murder to facilitate the relocation of her daughter, Wendi Adelson, and her two young grandsons from Tallahassee to Miami amid a contentious custody battle following Wendi’s divorce from Markel. Donna is the fourth individual to face trial in connection with Markel's murder, following the convictions of her son, Charlie Adelson, Charlie's ex-girlfriend Katherine Magbanua, and hitmen Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera. Recent court filings reveal that Adelson’s defense team has submitted a motion in limine to exclude specific evidence and arguments from her trial. One key request is to prevent testimony from Tallahassee Police Investigator Craig Isom, who previously testified that he asked Donna and her husband, Harvey, to submit to a police interview at Markel’s memorial service—a request they declined. The defense argues that presenting this testimony in Donna’s trial would unfairly use her pre-arrest silence against her, potentially prejudicing the jury if she decides to testify. Another significant motion seeks to exclude details about the Adelson family’s finances. Donna’s attorneys argue that evidence concerning the family's wealth, including assets from their now-closed dental practice, the Adelson Institute, and Charlie’s financial dealings, is irrelevant to the charges against Donna and could bias the jury. They claim that any funds paid to Magbanua following Markel’s murder came from Charlie’s money and that financial information about the Adelson Institute would not impact Donna’s culpability. As the trial date approaches, all eyes are on the court’s decisions regarding these motions, which could significantly impact the trial’s proceedings and outcome. #DonnaAdelson #DanMarkel #MurderForHire #LegalDefense #CourtroomStrategy #JurySelection #CriminalTrial Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In this episode of "Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski," retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke discusses the case of Donna Adelson and the murder-for-hire plot against her former son-in-law, Dan Markel. Dreeke reflects on how the evidence, including checks signed by Donna, implicates her involvement in the plot, allegedly orchestrated to keep Dan from hindering the Adelson family’s desire to have Wendy and the children move closer. Dreeke comments on the stupidity of those involved, such as making payments for the murder as if on a layaway plan, and how the family dynamic allowed them to fall into groupthink, creating a false sense of security. He touches on Donna's arrest while attempting to flee to Vietnam and speculates about the involvement of other family members, including Wendy and Harvey Adelson, who remain uncharged but may face scrutiny as the investigation continues. The conversation highlights the value of patience in investigative processes and the importance of peeling back layers to expose the full depth of involvement. Dreeke also compares this case to others involving family conspiracies, like the Chad and Lori Daybell case, emphasizing that more information may come to light as the investigation progresses. - Donna Adelson’s checks to intermediaries connect her to the murder-for-hire plot. - The plot against Dan Markel was allegedly motivated by family disputes over child custody. - Donna was arrested while attempting to flee to Vietnam, raising questions about Harvey's involvement. - Groupthink played a major role in the family's misguided sense of security. - The investigation is likely to reveal more layers as investigators take down key players one by one. - Dreeke draws parallels to other high-profile family conspiracy cases like Chad and Lori Daybell. - Patience in the investigation is crucial to uncovering all involved parties. #DonnaAdelson #DanMarkel #WendiAdelson #MurderForHire #FamilyConspiracy #CriminalInvestigation #Justice Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? 11:35In the podcast episode, Defense Attorney Bob Motta discusses the ongoing developments in the case involving Donna Adelson, accused of being the mastermind behind the murder of Dan Markel. Donna, who allegedly facilitated the financial aspects of the crime, is set to face trial soon. Charlie Adelson, already convicted and now testifying for the state, raises questions about whether his testimony will implicate Donna or serve another purpose. Motta suggests that Charlie's testimony might be strategic, intended to expose inconsistencies rather than flip on his mother. The discussion touches on the broader involvement of the Adelson family, particularly Wendy Adelson, who has yet to face charges despite strong suspicions of her involvement. The lack of concrete evidence against Wendy is seen as the primary reason for the delay in her arrest. Motta speculates that the prosecution may be waiting for more family members to be convicted, thereby making it implausible for a jury to believe Wendy's non-involvement. The conversation also examines the enmeshed nature of the Adelson family and their collective effort to prioritize family interests, likening it to a mafia-like operation. The complex web of relationships and the strategic use of family testimonies highlight the challenges and intricacies of securing convictions in this case. **Main Points:** - Donna Adelson is set to face trial for her alleged role as the financier in Dan Markel's murder. - Charlie Adelson will testify for the state, raising questions about his potential testimony and its impact on Donna's trial. - Motta doubts Charlie will turn against Donna due to lack of personal benefit. - Wendy Adelson remains uncharged despite suspicions, likely due to insufficient evidence. - The prosecution may be building a domino effect case, convicting family members to strengthen the case against Wendy. - The Adelson family operates in a highly enmeshed manner, prioritizing collective family interests. - The prosecution faces challenges in proving Wendy's direct knowledge and involvement in the murder plot. **Hashtags:** #DonnaAdelson #CharlieAdelson #WendyAdelson #DanMarkel #FamilyCrime #LegalStrategy #BobMotta Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? What does the refusal to seek a plea deal in a high-profile criminal case indicate about the strategies of the prosecution and defense? This question takes center stage in the upcoming trial of Donna Adelson, set for September 30th, as discussed on the "Hidden Killers" podcast with host Tony Brueski and psychotherapist Shavaun Scott. The case, which already has Charlie Adelson serving a life sentence, presents a unique situation where neither the prosecution nor the defense is pursuing a plea deal. Scott speculates, "It may be a game of chicken to see who caves first," suggesting that both sides believe they have a strong chance of winning. Brueski brings up an intriguing point about the potential long-term strategy of the investigators and prosecutors. He wonders if the refusal to offer a plea deal could be a tactic to gather more information on other suspects, namely Wendy and Harvey Adelson. "I'm wondering if it's just a strategy of let's take them down one by one... More will come out as we dive into learning about Donna," he posits. The discussion also delves into the psychological state of Donna Adelson as she awaits her trial. Scott believes Donna might be in shock and possibly clinging to a grandiose belief in her exoneration. When asked about the possibility of Donna throwing Charlie under the bus, Scott doubts it, explaining the narcissistic tendencies of the family. "For the narcissist, their children are a part of them," she notes, suggesting that this familial bond could influence Donna's defense strategy. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? What happens when a family's tangled web of secrets starts to unravel in the courtroom? This question is at the heart of a recent episode of the "Hidden Killers" podcast, where hosts Tony Brueski and Robin Dreeke, a retired FBI Special Agent, delve into the complex case involving Donna Adelson and the murder of her former son-in-law, Dan Markle. The discussion explores the dynamics of the Adelson family, the evidence against them, and the intriguing absence of plea deals, hinting at a deeper narrative of narcissism, manipulation, and familial betrayal. Brueski sets the scene, describing how Donna Adelson is marking the date of her trial in her jail cell, charged in connection with Markle's death. Her son, Charlie, has already been convicted of the murder. Brueski finds it interesting that no plea deal has been offered to Donna, suggesting a strong case against her. Dreeke, applying his expertise in behavioral analysis, notes that initial media portrayals of Donna seemed to suggest she might be an outlier in the case. However, upon closer examination, he observes that the lack of a plea deal indicates "they got a solid case." This assessment is bolstered by phone call evidence between Charlie and Donna, which Brueski describes as indicative of neither innocence nor ignorance. The conversation then turns to the broader family dynamics. Brueski and Dreeke discuss the roles of other family members, including Harvey and Wendy Adelson, contemplating their potential involvement or awareness of the murder plot. Dreeke speculates on the psychology of the family, suggesting a scenario of cognitive dissonance, where abnormal behavior becomes normalized over time. The podcast episode also touches on the possibility of turning family members against each other to unravel the truth. Dreeke posits that if the prosecution can alleviate fear and make someone feel safe, they might reveal crucial information. This approach could be pivotal in a case where family loyalty and fear have potentially suppressed the truth. In summary, the "Hidden Killers" episode sheds light on the complexities of the Adelson case, illustrating how familial bonds, manipulation, and psychological dynamics play into the investigation and prosecution of serious crimes. The lack of plea deals and the evidence against Donna Adelson suggest a strong case, raising questions about the extent of the family's involvement and the potential for further revelations as the trial proceeds. 10:06What does the absence of a plea deal signify in a high-profile murder case? This crucial question is at the heart of a recent episode of "Hidden Killers," where host Tony Brueski and defense attorney Bob Motta, host of "Defense Diaries," discuss the latest developments in the murder case of Dan Markel, involving Donna Adelson, her son Charlie, and potentially other family members. Donna Adelson, accused of masterminding the murder of her former son-in-law Dan Markel, has been denied a plea deal, a move that Motta finds unsurprising. He suggests that the decision to go to trial without a plea deal indicates the family's united front, especially considering Charlie Adelson's insistence on his innocence and ongoing appeal. Motta posits, "for her to plead guilty would be an absolute death knell to Charlie’s appeal." The conversation turns to the potential defense strategies for Donna Adelson. Motta doubts she would betray her family, even in the face of mounting evidence. He adds, "She’s not snitching. She’s not turning state’s evidence." Motta also speculates on why the prosecution might have approached Donna with a plea deal offer, considering their belief in Charlie's primary role in orchestrating the hit. Brueski and Motta delve into Wendy Adelson's involvement in the case. Despite strong circumstantial evidence, Motta suggests Wendy might have been too crafty for prosecutors to gather sufficient evidence against her. He notes, "They started with Charlie because they felt they had the strongest case with Charlie." The discussion also touches on Harvey Adelson, Donna's husband, and his potential knowledge of the crime. Motta points out that the dynamics of long-term relationships can vary, making it challenging to ascertain his level of involvement or awareness without concrete evidence like text messages or communications. As the conversation concludes, Motta and Brueski highlight the complexity and intrigue surrounding the Markel murder case. The absence of a plea deal for Donna Adelson raises questions about the state's confidence in their evidence and the Adelson family's defense strategy, leaving observers to wonder: What will be revealed in the upcoming trial? Can a trial without a plea deal unravel a deeper web of criminality? This intriguing question is at the heart of the upcoming trial of Donna Adelson, as discussed on "Hidden Killers," a podcast hosted by Tony Brueski featuring insights from former felony prosecutor and attorney Eric Faddis. The case revolves around Donna Adelson, accused of orchestrating the murder of her former son-in-law, Dan Markell. With her son Charlie Adelson already serving a life sentence, the trial, set for September 30th, promises to be a riveting affair, with neither the prosecution nor the defense seeking a plea deal. Faddis notes, "That signals to me that the prosecutor thinks they probably have a pretty strong case against Donna Adelson." Brueski and Faddis delve into the potential strategies of both sides. For the defense, the absence of a plea deal is puzzling, given the peripheral role Donna may have played. Faddis suggests, "This is the type of case where you want to try to broker an agreement." However, the defense claims publicly they are not pursuing this route. The conversation then shifts to the possible motives behind the prosecution's strategy. Faddis agrees with Brueski's theory that avoiding a plea deal might be a tactic to uncover more information, potentially implicating other family members like Harvey and Wendy Adelson. "I think prosecution is using it as leverage right now to try to broaden their case," Faddis concurs. The podcast also touches upon the importance of discretion in such high-profile cases. Faddis advises, "Shut up, get off the phone," emphasizing the dangers of jailhouse calls becoming central evidence at trial. As the trial of Donna Adelson approaches, questions linger about the prosecution's strategy and the potential revelations it might bring. With no plea deal on the table, will this trial expose a larger conspiracy, or will it simply focus on Donna's alleged actions? The mystery deepens, leaving the public and legal experts alike eagerly awaiting the trial's commencement. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? The recent developments in the case involving Donna Adelson, who faces charges related to the murder of Dan Markle, have raised eyebrows, particularly regarding her choice of legal representation. Psychologist Dr. John Delatorre joined Tony Brueski on the "Hidden Killers" podcast to analyze the Adelson family dynamics and their series of questionable decisions. The conversation begins with a critical question: "What drives a family like the Adelsons to make such controversial choices, especially in a high-stakes legal battle?" This question sets the stage for an in-depth analysis of the family's mindset and actions. Brueski points out the Adelsons' apparent operation within their own echo chamber, seemingly oblivious or indifferent to the gravity of their situation. Delatorre describes the family as exuding privilege and narcissism. "The conversations that she was having with Charlie, over the phone, just scream privilege and they just scream that they believe themselves to be holier than thou," he notes, shedding light on the family's perceived superiority and entitlement. The discussion shifts to the psychological build-up that leads to extreme actions like murder. Delatorre emphasizes that such actions don't occur spontaneously but are the result of a gradual escalation of boundary-pushing behavior. "No one ever just snaps; you never just end up going from not having killed someone to killing someone, and it's not self-defense," he explains, suggesting a history of violence or aggression within the Adelson family. Brueski and Delatorre also delve into the Adelsons' decision to hire the same attorney who represented Charlie Adelson, resulting in his life sentence. Delatorre speculates on the possible motives behind this choice, including a desire to maintain control over what information gets revealed. "There's something very strange about hiring a guy who just lost," he remarks, hinting at potential hidden agendas. The conversation takes a broader view of the Adelsons' actions, with Delatorre suggesting that their behavior is indicative of a deeper, more systemic issue. "Adelsons, they've decided that what they want is more important than what anybody else wants, and they'll make an entire family suffer just in order to get what they want," he asserts, highlighting the family's disregard for others' well-being. As the episode concludes, Brueski and Delatorre leave the audience with a thought-provoking question: "In the complex web of legal and ethical issues surrounding the Adelson family, can the truth about their motivations and actions ever fully come to light, or will the depths of their privilege and narcissism remain obscured?" This question encapsulates the uncertainty and intrigue surrounding a case that continues to captivate and confound observers. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In a recent episode of the "Hidden Killers" podcast, hosts Tony Brueski and retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke discuss the perplexing decision of Donna Adelson in her upcoming trial for the murder of FSU law professor Dan Markle. Adelson, facing charges of murder, conspiracy, and solicitation, has chosen to hire the same attorney who previously represented her son, Charlie, who was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. The conversation begins with a critical question: "Why would Donna Adelson hire the same attorney who failed to prevent her son's conviction?" This question sets the stage for an in-depth analysis of the Adelson family dynamics and their approach to the legal system. Brueski outlines the case's key elements, noting the unusual choice of Donna Adelson to retain the same lawyer who represented her son. Dreeke, with his expertise in behavioral analysis, delves into the psychology of the Adelson family. "This family lives in an echo chamber," he observes, suggesting that their insular world view has led to a series of poor decisions. The hosts discuss the Adelson family's apparent lack of objectivity and their tendency to surround themselves with people who reinforce their own beliefs. Dreeke references Robert Greene's "Laws of Human Nature," which discusses the human tendency to seek validation of personal opinions. "There are no loving critics, because your loving critics think the same thing you do," Dreeke explains, highlighting the lack of diverse perspectives within the Adelson family. Brueski and Dreeke also examine the content of phone calls between Adelson family members, noting their peculiar nature. The calls do not explicitly discuss the murder but reveal a pattern of mutual encouragement and reinforcement within their echo chamber. "They're not flat out discussing the murder as if they did it. It's very much their kind of echo chamber and giving each other encouragement in weird ways," Brueski notes. Dreeke comments on the intellectual capabilities of the Adelson family, contrasting them with other cases they have discussed. Despite their apparent intelligence, their insularity has led to unwise choices. "When you don't have objectivity outside the small circle of family, you're going to make a lot of dumb decisions and dumb choices," Dreeke remarks. The conversation shifts to the arrogance and judgmental nature of the Adelsons, particularly in their interactions with others. Brueski recounts Charlie Adelson's derogatory comments about the jury members in his trial, illustrating the family's disdainful attitude towards those outside their circle. Dreeke concludes that the Adelsons' behavior is not just about collecting grievances but about being vindictive. "This is a nasty, vindictive group of people that stand in judgment of everyone because they think everyone else is a moron but them," he says. As the episode concludes, Brueski and Dreeke leave the audience with a thought-provoking question: "In a case as complex and emotionally charged as the Adelsons', can the truth be discerned through the layers of family loyalty, arrogance, and self-deception?" This question encapsulates the uncertainty and intrigue surrounding a case that continues to captivate and confound observers. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In a recent episode of "Hidden Killers," Tony Brueski discussed the intriguing case of the Adelson family with psychotherapist and author Shavaun Scott. The conversation centered around Donna Adelson's involvement in the murder of her former son-in-law, Dan Markel, and the subsequent jailhouse calls that led to her arrest. But what does this case reveal about the psychological dynamics of the Adelson family? Scott described the Adelsons as a prime example of a narcissistic family system. "It's really striking how much this is like the core of how they relate to each other," she observed, referring to the self-aggrandizing and contemptuous nature of their conversations. This led to a discussion about the rarity of encountering a whole family exhibiting such extreme narcissistic traits. Brueski and Scott delved into the potential defense strategies for Donna Adelson. Given the narcissistic bond within the family, Scott doubted that Donna would betray her son, Charlie, despite it being a clear defense route. "They just double down on it," Scott said, explaining the family's likely approach to sticking together as a unit. The conversation then shifted to Wendy Adelson, whose possible involvement in the crime has been a subject of speculation. Scott's take on Wendy was that she appeared arrogant and self-satisfied, believing herself to be above the law. "She comes off very arrogant and very self-satisfied," Scott noted, suggesting a sense of entitlement and disregard for consequences. The discussion concluded with an exploration of the family's possible justification for their actions. Scott believed that the Adelsons likely rationalized their actions as necessary, with a deep-seated belief in their own righteousness. "They're not reflective, they're not self-aware," she stated, implying that the family likely believes their actions were justified, despite the legal and moral implications. As the case continues to unfold, one question remains: Will the Adelson family's apparent narcissism and contempt for others ultimately be their downfall, or will their tight-knit bond enable them to weather the legal storm together? Is History Repeating Itself in the Adelson Family's Legal Saga? In a riveting episode of "Hidden Killers," host Tony Brueski and guest Bob Motta, a defense attorney and host of "Defense Diaries," delved into the ongoing legal drama surrounding the Adelson family. The focus was on Donna Adelson, accused of conspiring to murder her former son-in-law, Dan Markel, following her son Charlie's life imprisonment for the same crime. The burning question: Why would Donna choose the same defense attorney who failed to acquit her son? Motta, pondering this decision, suggested, "The only thing that makes any sense to me is just his intricate knowledge of the case." He acknowledged the attorney's deep understanding, despite the unsuccessful defense in Charlie's trial. "He knows the case forward and backward," Motta added, implying that this familiarity might benefit Donna's defense. The conversation then shifted to the unique defense strategy used in Charlie's trial. Motta observed, "It was creative and it was a defense and it was sellable," despite its ultimate failure to convince the jury. This raises questions about the effectiveness of similar strategies in Donna's upcoming trial. A critical aspect of the case involves the alleged financial transactions and communications within the Adelson family. Motta highlighted the importance of these details, saying, "They had all that testimony on there like, oh, I got the bag of money and it was wet." Such evidence could imply Donna's involvement in the conspiracy, especially considering her and Charlie's post-conviction phone calls, which Motta described as exhibiting a "guilty consciousness." The legal intricacies of the case are further complicated by the dynamics of family relationships and the implications of their conversations. Motta emphasized the admissibility and potential impact of these discussions in court, noting, "It's absolute proof of indicia of guilt." As the case unfolds, the Adelson family's legal strategy and the prosecution's approach remain under intense scrutiny. With Donna's trial looming, the question of whether the same defense team can navigate these treacherous legal waters successfully this time around is a matter of keen interest. The episode concluded with a reflection on the broader implications of the case. Brueski and Motta's discussion highlighted not just the legal aspects but also the human drama at play, leaving listeners to ponder: Will Donna Adelson's fate mirror her son's, or will the intricate knowledge of her defense team pave a different path? In a recent episode of the "Hidden Killers" podcast, hosts Tony Brueski and former Felony Prosecutor Eric Faddis delved into a perplexing legal maneuver within the Adelson family, raising the question: When the stakes are life imprisonment, why would Donna Adelson choose the same attorneys who failed to acquit her son, Charlie Adelson? This decision comes as Donna faces charges of conspiring to murder her former son-in-law, with a trial looming on the horizon. Faddis expressed his bewilderment, "It's a bit of a head-scratcher for me, Tony. They know the case really well, but they lost one, and two, there could be a conflict that arises." He speculated that Donna's best legal strategy might involve blaming Charlie, already serving a life sentence. This potential conflict of interest underscores the complexity and ethical murkiness of the case. The conversation took a turn towards the broader implications of attorney-client privilege. Brueski questioned whether retaining the same attorney could be a strategy to protect other family members, specifically Wendy Adelson. Faddis acknowledged this possibility, noting, "It gets murky ethically at that point for the attorney." The case's intricacies don't end there. Donna's arrest while attempting to flee to Dubai adds another layer of intrigue. Faddis pondered her next move: "She's going to have to decide, do I spill my guts to law enforcement and cooperate, or do I stay tight-lipped and try to ride out my defense?" This decision could implicate other family members in the homicide, potentially leading to more arrests. The podcast also touched on the curious absence of legal action against Donna's husband, who was with her during the attempted escape. Faddis speculated, "Donna had more direct involvement in those conversations... Now that they're on her, they're going to do follow-up investigation." This suggests law enforcement might be biding their time, gathering more evidence before making further moves. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on the entire Adelson family, including Wendy. Faddis advised, "Law enforcement would be prudent to keep a close eye on everybody within this circle, especially Wendy." The Adelson case, with its twists and turns, poses a fundamental question: How far does familial loyalty extend in the face of legal jeopardy? As the saga unfolds, one can't help but wonder, will justice in this case prove to be a family affair, or will the individual pursuits of self-preservation fracture familial bonds? 10:17Have you ever wondered how deep family loyalty can run, even in the face of overwhelming evidence of wrongdoing? The latest episode of the podcast "Hidden Killers" with Tony Brueski, featuring former FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer, delves into the intriguing and complex case of the Adelson family. The discussion centers around Donna Adelson, facing conspiracy murder charges, and the curious decision to retain the same attorney who failed to save her son, Charlie, from a life sentence. The Adelsons, once a seemingly typical family, have been thrust into the public eye under the most harrowing circumstances. Tony Brueski opens the discussion by highlighting the bizarre world the Adelsons seem to inhabit, marked by a series of questionable decisions and actions. "What happens next in the wacky, crazy world of the Adelsons?" he asks, setting the stage for a deep dive into the family's dynamics and legal troubles. Jennifer Coffindaffer, with her extensive experience in law enforcement, offers a unique perspective on the case. She suggests that the decision to keep Charlie's attorney might be strategic, given his deep knowledge of the case. "It takes hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars to catch somebody up on a case like this," she explains, highlighting the practical considerations behind this choice. However, the conversation quickly turns to the darker aspects of the case. Coffindaffer points out the significant evidence against Charlie Adelson and the implications of Donna's actions, particularly her attempt to flee, which she describes as a "consciousness of guilt." The discussion reveals a family seemingly entrenched in their own narrative, disconnected from the reality of their situation. Brueski and Coffindaffer delve into the family's apparent narcissism and their disparaging comments about the jury during Charlie's trial. "They think they are completely untouchable," Coffindaffer remarks, painting a picture of a family living in an echo chamber of self-aggrandizement and denial. The podcast also touches on the potential defense strategies for Donna Adelson's upcoming trial. Coffindaffer speculates that Donna might attempt to distance herself from the actions of her son, portraying herself as an oblivious grandmother. However, she doubts the effectiveness of such a defense, given the overwhelming evidence and Donna's own incriminating actions. The conversation then shifts to other family members, particularly Donna's husband, who has yet to face charges. Coffindaffer suggests that law enforcement might be waiting for him to incriminate himself, as the Adelsons have a pattern of doing. As the episode concludes, Brueski and Coffindaffer ponder the future of the Adelson family, particularly what their conversations might be like a decade from now, potentially behind bars. The episode leaves listeners with a haunting question: How far can familial narcissism stretch, and at what point does it collide with the harsh reality of the law? The Adelson case, as discussed in "Hidden Killers," is a stark reminder of the complexities of family dynamics, the blinding power of ego, and the inevitable consequences of actions taken in the belief of being above the law. As the legal proceedings against Donna Adelson continue, the public watches with bated breath, wondering if justice will prevail in the face of such profound arrogance and denial.. 11:10In a recent episode of the podcast "Hidden Killers," host Tony Brueski and guest Bob Motta, a renowned defense attorney and host of "Defense Diaries," delved into a complex and intriguing legal drama involving a family enmeshed in criminal activities. The conversation centered around the legal implications for family members, particularly Wendy, in a case that has already seen Charlie incarcerated for life. Motta explained the nuances of attorney-client privilege, a cornerstone of legal ethics. "The only time we can break privilege as attorneys is if I'm made aware of my client committing a crime in the future," Motta stated, highlighting the strict conditions under which confidentiality can be breached. This principle plays a crucial role in the case, especially regarding conversations between the family's attorney and Donna, another family member. The discussion took a turn when examining Donna's potential role in the crime. Motta pondered, "If she admits to having knowledge of the plan, she then becomes an accomplice." This raises questions about the extent of Donna's involvement and her awareness of the criminal plans. A significant point of interest was the role of Wendy, suspected by some, including a YouTuber referred to by Motta, of being the mastermind behind the crimes. Despite suspicions and circumstantial evidence, Motta emphasized the challenge prosecutors face in proving such allegations. "They don't have the evidence against her. Otherwise, they don't need to wait," he remarked, underscoring the gap between suspicion and legal proof. The conversation also touched on the aftermath of Charlie's conviction, particularly focusing on Donna's actions and statements in recorded phone calls. Motta expressed disbelief at her lack of discretion, noting, "Those phone calls are damning. If I'm her attorney, I'm desperately trying to convince her we're not beating this at trial." As the discussion veered towards the potential involvement of Donna's husband, Motta speculated on the likelihood of him being next in line for prosecution. He explained, "They've been married forever. They tell each other everything," suggesting his possible complicity or at least knowledge of the crimes. The episode concluded with Brueski and Motta reflecting on the bizarre and often unbelievable nature of real-life criminal cases. Motta mused, "Fiction has nothing on reality," highlighting the often stranger-than-fiction scenarios they encounter in their line of work. As the legal saga continues to unfold, one question lingers: Will the truth about Wendy's involvement ever come to light, or will the intricacies of legal ethics and lack of concrete evidence keep it shrouded in mystery? 10:34In a surprising turn of events, recorded jail calls between Donna Adelson and her son, Charlie Adelson, have shed light on the emotional turmoil within the Adelson family following Charlie's conviction in the high-profile Dan Markel murder case. Charlie Adelson, a wealthy periodontist from Fort Lauderdale, was found guilty on November 6 of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation in the 2014 killing of his former brother-in-law, Dan Markel. His mother, Donna Adelson, faced arrest on similar charges just days later, sparking intense scrutiny of their family dynamics. The jail calls, totaling more than 35 hours, captured candid conversations between Charlie and his parents as they grappled with the consequences of his conviction and the impending legal proceedings. One particular call, initiated by Charlie Adelson from the Leon County Detention Facility, lasted 25 minutes and was marked by emotional exchanges between Charlie and Donna Adelson. During this call, Donna Adelson discussed several significant topics: 1. **The Markel Case:** Donna Adelson openly spoke about the Markel murder case, reflecting the family's distress. Her statements indicated the gravity of the situation, given Charlie's recent conviction and the ongoing investigation. 2. **Text Message from Daughter:** She read aloud a text message exchange with her daughter, Wendi Adelson, which occurred hours after the guilty verdicts were announced. Wendi's message expressed her position that she was not responsible for Charlie's situation and focused on caring for her sons during this difficult time. 3. **Suicidal Thoughts:** Donna Adelson made conflicting remarks about her own emotional state, mentioning thoughts of not wanting to see her son and suggesting a joint suicide. She expressed a desire to escape from the situation, raising concerns about her well-being. 4. **Extradition to Vietnam:** She mentioned looking up Vietnam multiple times to determine whether it had an extradition treaty with the U.S., possibly hinting at future plans. The call took place on November 7, the day following Charlie Adelson's conviction and shortly before Donna's arrest. It was marked by moments of tension and vulnerability, showcasing the immense stress experienced by the Adelson family. Prosecutors revealed that these jail calls, totaling over 35 hours of conversations between Charlie, Donna, and others, played a pivotal role in accelerating Donna Adelson's arrest. The calls forced them to expedite their timetable. Donna Adelson, who had been in solitary confinement and on suicide watch, recently made her first in-person appearance in a Leon County courtroom. During her arraignment, she pleaded not guilty to charges related to the murder of Dan Markel. Her attorney alleged mistreatment by the jail authorities but was unsuccessful in obtaining intervention by the court. The Markel case, dating back to 2014, has garnered widespread attention for its intricate details and complex family dynamics. Dan Markel was fatally shot in his garage during a legal battle with his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, who had ties to the Adelson family. Prosecutors have long maintained that Markel's murder was orchestrated to facilitate Wendi Adelson's relocation to Miami. The recorded jail calls provide a unique insight into the emotions and conversations that unfolded within the Adelson family during this tumultuous period. As the legal proceedings continue, the Markel case remains a focal point of interest and scrutiny. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? 12:34Donna Adelson, who faces charges in connection with the 2014 murder of her former son-in-law, Dan Markel, has taken a significant step in her legal defense by hiring a new team of attorneys. Her choice of legal representation has raised eyebrows, as it includes the attorney who defended her son Charlie Adelson during his trial. According to documents posted by the Leon County Clerk, Donna Adelson has enlisted the services of Daniel Rashbaum, the attorney who led her son Charlie Adelson's defense, and Tallahassee-based attorney Alex Morris. This move marks a significant development in her legal battle as she faces serious charges of murder, conspiracy, and solicitation in the high-profile case. The substitution of counsel motion filed by Rashbaum and Morris was approved by Circuit Judge Stephen Everett, paving the way for them to replace Donna Adelson's previous attorney, Marissel Descalzo of Miami. This decision comes as the case against Donna Adelson unfolds and enters a critical phase. A case management hearing, originally scheduled for a recent date, had to be canceled due to severe weather conditions that prompted the closure of all courts in the Second Circuit. A new date for the hearing has not yet been set, but it remains an important event in the legal proceedings. Donna Adelson's legal team is not only advocating for her but also making a strong statement about her innocence. Attorney Alex Morris emphasized that Donna Adelson is a mother, grandmother, and wife who vehemently denies any involvement in the alleged criminal conspiracy to kill Dan Markel. Charlie Adelson, her son, was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison for his role in the murder-for-hire plot. He had been convicted of hiring hitmen to carry out the murder of Dan Markel, who was embroiled in a contentious custody battle with Charlie's sister, Wendi Adelson. In response to the charges against Donna Adelson, Morris stated, "Donna Adelson had absolutely nothing to do with Mr. Markel’s homicide, and the evidence demonstrates this. The State’s efforts to prosecute Mrs. Adelson are not supported by the evidence. We look forward to getting this matter to trial as quickly as possible in the coming months." The case management hearing that was canceled due to adverse weather conditions has been rescheduled for January 30. Donna Adelson's legal team is determined to pursue her defense vigorously and work towards clearing her name in the ongoing legal battle. Donna Adelson is the latest individual to face charges related to Dan Markel's murder, with four others, including her son Charlie, already convicted and sentenced to prison. The case continues to garner significant attention as it unfolds in the courtroom, with legal proceedings expected to intensify in the coming months. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? 1 Mother of Convicted Dentist Arrested in Connection with 2014 Murder of Florida State Professor 8:34
Exactly one week after a wealthy Florida dentist, Charlie Adelson, was convicted of killing his sister’s husband, Dan Markel, his mother, Donna Adelson, 73, has been arrested in connection with the 2014 murder. The arrest took place at Miami Dade International Airport, where Donna Adelson and her husband, Harvey Adelson, were about to board a flight to Vietnam with a stop in Dubai. Donna Adelson was charged in connection with the shooting death of Dan Markel, a 41-year-old Florida State University law professor. She has been charged with murder, conspiracy, and solicitation, according to State Attorney Jack Campbell. Campbell explained the urgency of Donna's arrest, stating, "That's what forced our hand. We started talking to some of our law enforcement partners about the complexities of bringing someone back from Dubai or Vietnam. And that might be a very complicated and lengthy process. So that’s why we had to make a decision quickly." Prosecutors allege that Donna Adelson played a role in the murder-for-hire plot that resulted in the death of Dan Markel on July 18, 2014. Markel was shot twice in the head at point-blank range in the garage of his Tallahassee home. He was sitting in his car, talking on the phone when he was attacked and later died in the hospital. The charges against Donna Adelson stem from a complicated family feud and custody battle involving her daughter, Wendi Adelson, and Dan Markel. After their divorce, Wendi wanted to move to Miami with their two children, but a judge required her ex-husband's consent, which he refused to give. Emails indicate that Donna Adelson was pushing for the move and allegedly wanted her daughter to influence Markel's decision. Prosecutors argued that Donna Adelson "hated" her son-in-law, particularly after he asked the judge to limit her unsupervised visits with her grandchildren due to alleged disparaging remarks she made about him to the children. Emotions ran high in the family, as revealed in emails Donna allegedly sent her daughter before Markel's murder. She encouraged Wendi to take control of her life and make Markel miserable. Donna allegedly stated, "You have 5 weeks before your court date... I know you can be a good actress when you want to. I’ve seen you in action. You need to put on the performance of your life!" During Charlie Adelson's trial for his involvement in the murder, prosecutors argued that he orchestrated the murder-for-hire plot on behalf of his younger sister, Wendi. However, Wendi has denied any involvement and has never been charged. Prosecutors claimed that Charlie enlisted the help of his then-girlfriend, Katherine “Katie” Magbanua, to hire two men, Sigfredo “Tuto” Garcia and Luis “Tato” Rivera, to carry out the murder. Garcia was convicted in 2019 and sentenced to life in prison for conspiracy. Magbanua was sentenced to life in prison in 2022 after being convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation. During his trial, Charlie Adelson testified that he had nothing to do with Markel's murder and claimed he was extorted by Magbanua and the two men. He said he had no knowledge of the murder plot until after it happened and that he was threatened with harm if he didn't pay a substantial sum of money. Now, Donna Adelson faces charges related to the murder plot that has left a lasting impact on the Markel family and the Adelsons. The case continues to unravel a complex web of family dynamics, conspiracies, and legal battles, shedding light on the dark events that led to the tragic death of Dan Markel. - Donna Adelson, mother of convicted dentist Charlie Adelson, was arrested by the FBI and other authorities at Miami Dade International Airport in connection with the 2014 murder of Florida State University law professor Dan Markel. - Donna Adelson and her husband, Harvey Adelson, were apprehended while preparing to board a flight to Vietnam with a stop in Dubai, according to State Attorney Jack Campbell. - She faces charges of murder, conspiracy, and solicitation, with prosecutors alleging her involvement in the murder-for-hire plot targeting her former son-in-law, Dan Markel. - The arrest occurred due to concerns that Donna Adelson was fleeing the country, as the United States lacks an extradition treaty with Vietnam, making her return uncertain. - The charges against her stem from the July 18, 2014, murder of Dan Markel, who was shot twice in the head at point-blank range outside his Tallahassee home. - The murder was linked to a complex family feud and custody battle between Dan Markel and his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, with Donna Adelson allegedly pushing for Wendi to move to Miami with their two children. - The case has previously resulted in convictions for individuals involved in the murder plot, including Charlie Adelson, Katherine “Katie” Magbanua, Sigfredo “Tuto” Garcia, and Luis “Tato” Rivera. Charlie Adelson, a dentist, was convicted of orchestrating the murder-for-hire plot, while Magbanua and Garcia were sentenced to life in prison for their roles in the murder. 10:00How does a family become entangled in a web of conspiracy and murder, driven by motives that defy understanding? This question lies at the heart of the shocking case surrounding Charles Adelson and Donna Adelson, recently discussed on the "Hidden Killers" podcast with Tony Brueski and trial consultant and body language expert Susan Constantine. Charles Adelson, recently convicted of murder, faces a life sentence. But the story doesn't end there. The focus has shifted to his mother, Donna Adelson, apprehended while trying to flee the country. She's now charged with murder, unraveling further layers of this complex family drama. Constantine, renowned for her expertise in decoding non-verbal cues, weighed in on this evolving narrative with Brueski, sharing her insights into the Adelson family dynamics. The case, riddled with intricacies, left even seasoned experts like Brueski and Constantine reaching for crime scene boards to make sense of the convoluted relationships and events. "I was getting a string out because it was like, who did what, did who, did he, what?" Brueski remarked, echoing the sentiments of many following the case. The motive behind the murder of Dan Markle, Charles Adelson’s brother-in-law, remains baffling. “There was really no abuse, no physical abuse, no sexual abuse. There’s nothing that would have warranted to have this guy dead,” Constantine noted, highlighting the seemingly baseless hatred driving the plot. The trial revealed incriminating phone calls and emails, suggesting a deep-seated animosity and a desire for control. Donna Adelson's role, particularly her attempt to flee to a non-extradition country, raised red flags for Constantine. “She escapes and goes to another country, tries to get out of the country because why wouldn’t she, if you’re guilty, you would run. If you’re innocent, you would stay and fight it out,” she observed, implying guilt through actions. A pivotal piece of evidence was an email from Donna to her daughter, the ex-wife of the victim. Constantine’s analysis of this communication is telling: “It’s like, I’m putting you, you know, right now you’ve got five weeks to figure it out.” This email, Constantine argues, suggests Donna's influential role in orchestrating the murder. The Adelson family dynamics, particularly the mother-son relationship between Donna and Charles, drew Constantine’s attention. “He’s obviously a very smart guy. What is going on with that mother-son dynamic?” she questioned. This dynamic, along with the strength in numbers theory, paints a picture of a family driven by collective disgruntlement, ultimately culminating in a tragic outcome. Constantine sees Donna Adelson as the ringleader, a figure exerting power and control over her family. “Mom or your dad are big influencers,” she said, highlighting the potential for a parent's influence to lead children down dark paths. The level of narcissism and vindictiveness displayed, according to Constantine, is not something that evolves overnight but is a trait developed over a lifetime. The Adelson case, with its layers of family intrigue, deceit, and now murder, poses a fundamental question about the nature of familial bonds and their potential to drive individuals to extreme actions. As Constantine pointedly notes, “No one wakes up being a narcissist.” This case, then, is not just about the murder of Dan Markle; it’s a deep dive into the psychology of a family capable of conspiring to such chilling ends. As the legal saga continues to unfold, the question remains: How far can the roots of familial influence extend in shaping decisions, and in this instance, could they have been the driving force behind a plot as heinous as murder? The answers, as the trial progresses, may offer a rare glimpse into the depths of human psychology and the dark corners of familial manipulation. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? What drives a family to the brink of murder and conspiracy? This is the question at the center of the "Hidden Killers" podcast, where Tony Brueski delved into the complex case involving Charles Adelson and his mother, Donna Adelson, with retired FBI Special Agent and Chief of the Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program, Robin Dreeke. The case, which has captivated public attention, involves the murder of Dan Markle, the ex-husband of Wendy Adelson, and has led to the conviction of Charles Adelson. Donna Adelson, Charles' mother, was later arrested while attempting to flee to Vietnam via Dubai, a country with no extradition agreement with the United States. This development has opened up a new chapter in this twisted family saga. During the podcast, Brueski and Dreeke discussed the possible involvement of Wendy Adelson, Dan Markle's ex-wife. Dreeke pointed out that in many cases, the victim's partner is often the first suspect. However, this case presents a more complex scenario, where the mother’s will seems to be a driving force. “Mom wants the grandkids here. Mom wants her own kids near her,” Brueski noted, suggesting Donna Adelson's possible motivations for orchestrating such a drastic plan. Dreeke shared his perspective on the case, highlighting the lack of clarity and suggesting hidden dynamics within the family. “There’s a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes with this family that’ll come out in the prosecution and the defense,” he said, predicting that the unfolding legal proceedings would reveal a deeply troubled family narrative. As for Donna Adelson’s husband, who was caught trying to board a plane to Dubai, Dreeke speculated about his potential involvement. “I think you’re, you know, conspiracy and knowledge of, and wittiness of all this is going to be rampant,” he said, indicating that the prosecution would likely scrutinize phone records, texts, and digital data to establish the extent of his involvement. An interesting angle Dreeke proposed is the possibility of family members pointing fingers at each other, especially towards Donna Adelson, as a way to deflect blame. This tactic, he noted, could be similar to the Chad Daybell and Lori Vallow case, where one party blames the other for their actions. The conversation also touched upon the legal implications of family members testifying against each other, with Brueski pointing out the complexities when it involves a husband and wife. Dreeke raised an intriguing hypothesis: the family might have pre-planned to have all blame fall on the elder Donna Adelson, given her age and the fewer years she has compared to other family members. Adding to the complexity is Donna Adelson's age and her talk of suicide as a potential exit strategy, which Dreeke described as possibly “one of the ultimate narcissistic moves.” He suggested that her actions could be seen as a way to take responsibility for a situation she may have created. As the case continues to unfold, the question that remains is: How deep does the familial manipulation run in the Adelson family, and to what extent are the members willing to go to protect one another or themselves? This case not only delves into the legal aspects of conspiracy and murder but also opens up a window into the psychological dynamics of a family caught in a web of crime. As more details emerge from the trial, the public may gain insight into a story that reads more like a thriller than real life. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? What happens when a family's twisted dynamics lead to the most heinous of crimes? This question forms the backdrop of the recent discussion on the "Hidden Killers" podcast, where host Tony Brueski and retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke delved into the disturbing case involving Charles Adelson and his mother, Donna Adelson, both charged with the first-degree murder of Dan Markle, Charles's brother-in-law. The case, which Robin Dreeke described as an "Adelson Murder Mess," offers a glimpse into the perplexing psychology of a family embroiled in a murder-for-hire plot. The involvement of Donna Adelson, dubbed the "mother-in-law from hell," raises questions about her influence over her children and her role as the possible ringleader in this tragic scenario. “It really is at its core domestic abuse, hardcore domestic abuse taken to that next level,” Dreeke noted, emphasizing the unusual nature of this case. The podcast discussion highlighted the aberrant family dynamics and the psychological mechanisms that might have led to such extreme actions. “When you Establish a pattern of what normal looks like in someone's life of crazy. It becomes part of that crazy,” Dreeke explained. This notion of ‘normalizing the abnormal’ within a family setting is a critical factor in understanding how a family could collectively rationalize a murder plot. Dreeke also introduced the concept of "trauma bonding," where victims of abuse become psychologically attached to their abusers. This could potentially explain the Adelson family's descent into criminality. He speculated, "You can cascade trauma bonding with bad problem solving with rage issues and you wind up with a mess like this." The case's dynamics also raise questions about the broader circle of involvement. While Charles and his mother Donna are currently the only family members charged, the extent of the family’s knowledge or participation remains a topic of speculation. “I think there's going to be definitely more information and data that will come out that we're unaware of right now,” Dreeke pondered, hinting at the possibility of other family members facing charges or coming forward as witnesses. The Adelson case stands as a stark reminder of how familial influence, combined with dysfunctional problem-solving and unchecked emotional issues, can lead to catastrophic decisions. The discussion on "Hidden Killers" paints a picture of a family where the lines between love, control, and abuse were blurred, resulting in a tragedy that shattered lives. As the legal proceedings continue, one can't help but wonder: What other secrets lie within the Adelson family, and how will they shape the outcome of this already shocking case? This case not only highlights the extreme consequences of dysfunctional family dynamics but also challenges our understanding of the lengths to which people will go to resolve personal conflicts. How does a family's tangled web of relationships escalate into a murder-for-hire plot? This question forms the crux of a recent discussion on the "Hidden Killers" podcast, where host Tony Brueski engaged with Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor and president of the West Coast Trial Lawyers Association, to unravel the complex case involving Charles Adelson and his mother, Donna Adelson. The Adelsons have been ensnared in a legal battle following the murder of Dan Markel, with Charles already convicted and Donna recently arrested while attempting to flee to a country without an extradition treaty with the U.S. Rahmani's insights provide a deeper understanding of the family dynamics and legal intricacies at play. Rahmani criticized the Adelsons' apparent misunderstanding of the criminal justice system, especially Donna's attempt to escape after Charles's conviction. “It just sort of baffles the mind how, frankly, stupid some people are,” he remarked, highlighting their misguided actions. The conversation delved into the prosecution's strategy in unraveling the case. “I would have charged everyone at once. Make them flip,” Rahmani said, questioning the sequential approach taken by prosecutors. He believes this approach may have missed an opportunity to leverage family members against each other. The involvement of other family members, particularly Wendy Adelson, Dan Markel's ex-wife, remains a contentious topic. Rahmani noted a lack of substantial evidence against her compared to Charles and Donna. “I think if prosecutors were going to charge her, they’d probably charge her now,” he stated, suggesting that the case against her might not be strong enough for prosecution. Discussing the motive behind the murder, Rahmani and Brueski pondered whether it was driven more by Donna's desires than any direct benefit to Wendy. The conversations highlighted in the case suggest a deep involvement of Donna, possibly as the matriarch pulling the strings. “You have, you’ve heard of helicopter moms, but you’ve got a helicopter grandma here,” Rahmani observed, pointing to Donna's excessive involvement in her children's lives. The case's prolonged investigation duration provided unique insights often not available in typical state cases. “You have a lot more information than you would typically have, frankly, because it took so long,” Rahmani pointed out. This extensive data, including wiretaps and recordings, offered a rare glimpse into the family's dynamics and interactions post-murder. This case not only highlights the extreme measures taken by the Adelson family but also raises questions about the influence of narcissistic parental figures. Donna Adelson's portrayal as a controlling, overbearing mother and grandmother brings to light the potential psychological drivers behind the crime. “She literally is the most extreme example of it, which now has led to murder,” Brueski noted. The case of the Adelson family serves as a stark reminder of the potential for familial relationships to devolve into criminality under the influence of toxic dynamics. As the legal process continues to unfold, one must ponder: What extent of manipulation and control can lead a family down such a dark path, and what other secrets might still be hidden within the Adelson family saga? Can the shadow of narcissism within a family lead to extreme criminal behavior? This question forms the core of a recent "Hidden Killers" podcast episode where host Tony Brueski and psychotherapist Shavaun Scott delve into the chilling case of the Adelson family. With Donna Adelson recently arrested and charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation to commit murder, shortly after her son, Charlie, was convicted, the family's dynamics have come under intense scrutiny. Scott, a psychotherapist and author, sheds light on the complex nature of narcissistic personality disorder, particularly within a family setting. “The narcissist always acts in ways that benefit them in some way, and they're very self-focused, self-aggrandizing,” she explains. This behavior creates a family environment where children are used as tools, and their needs become secondary to the parent's desires. In the Adelson family, these dynamics seem to have taken a dark and tragic turn. The podcast discussion reveals how Donna Adelson's alleged narcissism might have played a pivotal role in the family's descent into criminality. Scott speculates that Donna’s need for control and desire to have her children and grandchildren close could have been a driving force behind the murder. “The children are used as tools, and it's like the narcissistic parent or grandparent feeds off their kids,” Scott notes, highlighting the insidious nature of such family dynamics. This conversation brings into focus the challenges faced by children of narcissistic parents. Scott emphasizes the difficulty these individuals face in recognizing the abnormality of their upbringing. “They don’t realize that this is abnormal because this is the fishbowl that they’ve swam in, their entire lives,” she states. For many, it takes years and significant life experiences to understand the toxic nature of their familial relationships. As the podcast delves deeper, it becomes evident that narcissistic parents can be vengeful and hold grudges, often perceiving slights where there are none. This trait can escalate to dangerous levels, as seen in the Adelson case. Discussing the therapy process, Scott reveals that adult children of narcissists often seek help to unravel the confusion surrounding their identity and feelings towards their parents. “It’s like a big ball of yarn that’s all tangled up,” she describes the process of making sense of these complicated family dynamics. The discussion also touches upon the seldom likelihood of narcissists acknowledging their problems. Scott estimates that less than 1 percent of severe narcissists ever realize or admit their issues. This insight is crucial in understanding the dynamics within the Adelson family and the unlikely possibility of a family member, particularly someone as allegedly controlling as Donna Adelson, recognizing their role in the tragic events. This episode of "Hidden Killers" not only sheds light on the Adelson family's case but also raises broader questions about the impact of narcissistic personality disorders in families. As listeners reflect on this case, they might wonder: How often do the invisible threads of narcissism in a family weave a pattern leading to devastating consequences? And in cases as extreme as the Adelsons', can the cycle of narcissistic abuse and its dire outcomes ever be broken? Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Could a family's distorted dynamics be the driving force behind a heinous crime? This question underpins the latest discussion on the "Hidden Killers" podcast, where host Tony Brueski and defense attorney Bob Motta, host of "Defense Diaries," delve into the complexities of the Adelson family case. The arrest of Donna Adelson for first-degree murder, following her son Charlie's conviction on the same charge, has thrown the family into a morass of suspicion and intrigue. Motta, in his discussion with Brueski, ponders the role of Donna Adelson as the potential mastermind behind the murder of her former son-in-law. Referring to her as "murdering Mamaw Adelson," Motta suggests that her narcissistic traits may have significantly influenced her children's behavior and decision-making. This perspective aligns with theories that consider the matriarch's potential control over the family as a critical factor in the crime's orchestration. The conversation then turns to Wendi Adelson, Dan Markel's ex-wife, who has not been charged but remains a subject of interest. Motta reflects on Wendi's actions and motivations, considering whether she could have been a silent participant or merely an unknowing bystander in the murder plot. “I just don’t know enough about how toxic that relationship between Wendi and Dan really was,” Motta states, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding her involvement. Analyzing the dynamics within the Adelson family, Motta suggests that Donna Adelson's domineering nature might have led her to take extreme measures to keep her children and grandchildren close. This theory posits that Donna could have orchestrated the murder to remove the perceived obstacle – her former son-in-law – to achieve her goal. Motta and Brueski also discuss the significant role of Charlie Adelson in the crime. Motta speculates that Charlie, possibly under his mother's influence, might have been a key player in organizing the murder, given his connections that enabled the involvement of the hitmen. “Charlie thinking he’s a real bright, crafty guy, kind of gets into the role,” Motta observes, indicating Charlie's likely active participation in the murder plot. The podcast episode sheds light on the psychology of family dynamics in criminal cases, particularly focusing on the influence of narcissistic parental figures. As Motta notes, “Having that overbearing mother… lorded over you for the entirety of your life… there’s something to be said for that as well.” As the conversation concludes, Motta raises doubts about whether Wendi Adelson will ever face charges. He suggests that her future testimonies could provide insights into her potential involvement or lack thereof. This uncertainty adds another layer of complexity to a case already rife with familial entanglements and psychological underpinnings. The "Hidden Killers" episode with Bob Motta leaves listeners with a lingering question: In a family marred by manipulation and control, where does individual responsibility begin, and the influence of a dominant family member end? As the legal saga of the Adelson family continues to unfold, this question remains at the heart of the mystery, challenging our understanding of family dynamics and their potential role in criminal behavior. Can the unraveling of a family's dark secrets lead to a deeper understanding of criminal motives? This question looms large in the latest episode of the "Hidden Killers" podcast, where host Tony Brueski and defense attorney Bob Motta, from "Defense Diaries," delve into the twisted saga of the Adelson family. The recent developments in the case have been startling, with Donna Adelson charged with first-degree murder shortly after her son, Charlie, was convicted on the same charge. The conversation with Motta offers a glimpse into the intricate family dynamics and the potential implications for the remaining members, particularly Wendy Adelson. Motta, reflecting on the case, posed a chilling question: “Is Mamaw, murdering Mamaw Adelson the mastermind?” This query hints at the possibility that Donna Adelson might have been the puppeteer in this grim family drama. The discussion then shifts to Wendy Adelson, Dan Markel’s ex-wife, who remains a figure of interest for law enforcement. “The state wants Wendy so bad,” Motta noted, suggesting her potential involvement in the case. The podcast also delves into Donna Adelson's ill-fated escape attempt. “She wasn’t real smart about it,” Motta commented on Donna's recorded jailhouse conversations, which included discussions about fleeing to Vietnam or Dubai, neither of which have extradition treaties with the United States. These details paint a picture of a desperate attempt to evade justice, further complicating the family’s already dark narrative. Motta pointed out the significant challenges in prosecuting Wendi Adelson. Unlike the cases against Charlie and Donna, where overlapping evidence exists, Wendi’s potential involvement requires different types of evidence. “This trial is going to be vastly different,” Motta observed, indicating that the path to prosecuting Wendy might be more arduous. A key piece of evidence discussed was the testimony regarding damp money, allegedly washed by Donna to remove traces of DNA or fingerprints. This evidence, which surfaced during Charlie’s trial, is seen as a critical link in the chain connecting Donna to the murder plot. Motta expressed surprise at the prosecution’s approach during Charlie’s cross-examination, where they seemingly glossed over this pivotal point. As the conversation on "Hidden Killers" unfolded, it became evident that the Adelson family case is not just a legal battle but also a complex psychological puzzle. The family dynamics, driven potentially by Donna Adelson’s manipulative influence, shed light on how deep-seated issues within a family can lead to catastrophic outcomes. The episode closes with a reflection on the challenges ahead for the prosecution, particularly in proving Donna’s alleged role as the ‘godmother’ of the plot and potentially implicating Wendi. This intricate case continues to captivate public interest, not just for its legal implications but also for its insights into family dynamics and criminal psychology. As the legal proceedings against the Adelson family continue to unfold, one is left to ponder: How deep can the roots of manipulation and deceit run within a family, and what are the limits of familial loyalty when faced with the ultimate test of morality and law? 10:51Donna Adelson, 73, the fifth individual arrested in connection with the nearly decade-old murder of Florida State University law professor Dan Markel, has arrived in Tallahassee to face charges related to the case. Her arrival comes after a recent arrest attempt at Miami International Airport, where she and her husband attempted to leave the country. Donna Adelson, who had been held in the Miami-Dade Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, was transported to the Leon County Detention Facility on Monday. She is currently being held without bond and was officially booked on Tuesday, according to online jail records. Her arrest took place on November 13, less than a week after her son, Charlie Adelson, was convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation in the murder of Dan Markel. Charlie Adelson faces a mandatory life sentence for his involvement in the murder of his former brother-in-law. Dan Markel, a 41-year-old law professor, was fatally shot in the garage of his Trescott Drive home on July 18, 2014. The murder occurred in the midst of a contentious legal battle between Markel and his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, Donna Adelson's daughter, over custody of their two sons and other related matters. A judge had denied Wendi Adelson's request to relocate with the children to Miami. Donna Adelson had been under scrutiny by law enforcement for her potential involvement in the case. Recorded jail calls between her and her son revealed discussions about possible suicide or fleeing to a non-extradition country. In 2016, an FBI undercover agent posed as a blackmailer and approached her with an article about Markel's killing, leading to further suspicions. During this encounter, known as the "bump," Donna Adelson called her son, hinting at the significance of the encounter. She also signed multiple checks totaling $18,000 from the family's dental practice, which were given to Katie Magbanua, who was dating Charlie Adelson at the time of the murder, despite Magbanua not actually working at the practice. The probable cause affidavit in the case detailed that Donna and her husband, Harvey Adelson, a retired dentist, had promised to arrange an interview with the Tallahassee Police Department's lead investigator at Markel's local memorial in 2014. However, they left Tallahassee with Wendi and the grandchildren the following day without fulfilling their promise. Subsequently, no one from the Adelson family contacted the police or inquired about the status of the investigation. In July 2015, Wendi Adelson changed her children's surname from Markel to Adelson. Donna Adelson's arrival in Tallahassee marks a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the murder of Dan Markel. As the case unfolds, authorities aim to establish her role in the alleged conspiracy. The Adelson family's involvement in this high-profile case has garnered widespread attention, and legal experts anticipate a complex legal battle ahead. This arrest serves as a reminder of law enforcement's persistent efforts to bring those responsible for Dan Markel's murder to justice. The case's complexity and the involvement of multiple individuals continue to captivate public interest nearly a decade after the tragic incident occurred.
