(A Recovery of Joy) WEEK #11 - 98th day of the Year

Scripture 4 Today: Mark 7:4-6 (KJV) He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. 7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

New Year's Theme - “REJOICE” - The joy of the Christian experience is the key theme running through this epistle. The words "joy" and "rejoice" are used 16 times in the epistle. Paul wrote Philippians at a time when he was suffering in prison (under house arrest), when he was weary and wondered if he might soon lose his life for Christ. And he wrote to people he loved. So his words to the Christians in Philippi were heavy but caring; sad but consoling; appreciative but bittersweet.

This Epistle of Philippians teaches that HUMILITY mixed with HOPE overcomes HARDSHIP and results in JOY (See Psalms 118:24 & Nehemiah 8:10)

Series Theme Verses:

*John 15:11 (KJV) These things have I spoken unto you, that my"joy"might remain in you, and that your "joy" might be full.

*Philippians 4:4 (KJV)“REJOICE” in the Lord alway: and again I say,“REJOICE”.

From these verses we see that our source of “REJOICING” comes from the Word of God on the inside of the Believer! Keep in mind the Apostle Paul by the Holy Spirit is dealing with the “Epicureans”, the “Stoics” and the “Judaizers”:

  • Epicureans: These were followers of the Greek philosopher Epicurus, who emphasized the pursuit of pleasure and avoidance of pain.
  • Stoics: These were followers of the Greek philosopher Zeno, who emphasized the importance of reason and virtue.
  • Judaizers: These were Jewish Christians who believed that Gentile converts to Christianity needed to follow Jewish customs and practices, such as circumcision, in order to be saved.

With that being said, let’s go to chapter 3:17-21 & 4:1 of Paul’s letter to the Philippians! In this section of this Epistle we will see:

*Text Philippians 3:17-21 & 4:1- Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample. 18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19 Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.) 20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: 21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself. 1 Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved.

*ReREAD Philippians 3:17-19 (KJV) Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample. 18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: 19 Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)
