(A Recovery of Joy) WEEK #3

New Year's Theme - “REJOICE” - The joy of the Christian experience is the key theme running through this epistle. The words "joy" and "rejoice" are used 16 times in the epistle. Paul wrote Philippians at a time when he was suffering in prison (under house arrest), when he was weary and wondered if he might soon lose his life for Christ. And he wrote to people he loved. So his words to the Christians in Philippi were heavy but caring; sad but consoling; appreciative but bittersweet.

This Epistle of Philippians teaches that HUMILITY mixed with HOPE overcomes HARDSHIP and results in JOY (See Psalms 118:24 & Nehemiah 8:10)

Series Theme Verses:

*John 15:11 (KJV) These things have I spoken unto you, that my"joy"might remain in you, and that your "joy" might be full.

*Philippians 4:4 (KJV)“REJOICE” in the Lord alway: and again I say,“REJOICE”.

From these verses we see that our source of “REJOICING” comes from the Word of God on the inside of the Believer! With that being said, let’s go to verses 12-19 of Paul’s letter to the Philippians in this chapter 1 and fill up with the Word:

#1 PERCEPTION (UNDERSTAND)

*READ Philippians 1:12 (KJV) But I would ye should UNDERSTAND, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;

Note “UNDERSTAND” #1097 (ghin-oce'-ko) to come to know and perceive.

Note “the furtherance of the gospel” - Paul’s persecution was making him a pioneer for the Gospel! Like Paul, see yourself as God’s trailblazer marking out the path for others to follow! Remember everyone is a leader at sometime, will you come to “UNDERSTAND” - perceive that truth! The etymology of the word “pioneer” = laborer and foot soldier!

It’s not “what” we know rather it must be about “WHO” we know because scripture teaches us our knowledge is fragmentary (incomplete and imperfect):

*1 Corinthians 13:9 (KJV) For we KNOW in part, and we prophesy in part.

The Apostle Paul by the Holy Spirit is teaching how love is so much better than gifts in this chapter. I just want us to see this truth about “KNOWING” in part.

*Proverbs 9:8-9 (KJV) Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. 9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

“UNDERSTAND” or “PERCEPTION” comes by having a humble teachable spirit like these believers at Philippi. Paul had “PERCEPTION” and it opened him up to be in God’s “PLACE”:

#2 PLACES (people)

*READ Philippians 1:13 (KJV) So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the PALACE, and in all other PLACES;

The Lord God with our corporation with the Holy Spirit can move us from the deepest prison to the most palatial palace! Remember Joseph (See Genesis chapters 37-41) went from being disrespected in his own house to the pit, then to Poptiphar’s house, then to prison and finally to second in command in Pharaoh's palace with great honor!

Food 4 Thought: The lower the devil tries to take you will result in the Lord taking you proportionally higher!

Paul tried to go on his own:

*Acts 16:6-7 (KJV) Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the r
