Australian artist James Atlas celebrates and satirizes shopping culture in his latest synth-pop single, “Retail Therapy.” The track, inspired by his experience at the Dubai Mall, explores his shopping addiction with playful lyrics and an upbeat dance sound.“It's about laughing at my shopping habits while enjoying them,” Atlas explains. The catchy refrain questions fulfillment and embraces consumerism:“How do I fill this void inside of me? / Oh, I know… Take it all home with me.”“Retail Therapy” marks a shift in Atlas’s style from acoustic roots to a more experimental electro-pop sound, featuring synths, ’80s-inspired drums, and humorous elements like cash register samples. His musical journey began in metal bands and evolved through jazz, leading to his solo acoustic work starting in 2020. He’s now combining pop influences with his love for space, even designing a rocket with a QR code linking to his album, which will be sold at shows.“I want ‘Retail Therapy’ to be everyone’s new shopping anthem,” he shares, looking forward to future projects and new musical directions.
