Amanda speaks with Dr. Katherine Blackney, psychologist and sex therapist, for a two-part interview. In part one, they discuss the often-feared conversation of how to talk to your kids about sex and childhood sexual development. Dr. Blackney discusses how to potty train in order to create a sexually secure child and teenager, redirecting self-touch when children are young, tools to prepare your kids/teenagers for when they are exposed to pornography, the physiology of the brain as children enter the teenage years, and the power of parents hugging their teenagers, amongst an array of other thought-provoking topics surrounding children and teenagers as they navigate sexual development.

Dr. Katherine Blackney is a psychologist, licensed professional counselor, and clinical sex therapist. She earned a Bachelor of Science in special education with a double major in human organizational development from Vanderbilt University (1999). She then received a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Miss. (2002), and earned a Ph.D. from The University of Memphis in counseling psychology (2009). She has worked in the counseling field for two decades. Dr. Blackney considers it a privilege and an honor to come alongside her patients in the season of their lives to equip, empower, enrich, and enhance them to be the best versions of themselves. Dr. Blackney is a wife of 11 years to an amazing husband who is her biggest cheerleader. She is also a mother to 5 incredible kids ages 3-9yrs old.
