STORY 1: B&B Social Opening in Downtown Canton
B&B Social, a new sports bar and entertainment venue by Intentional Expectations Hospitality Group, opens Wednesday in downtown Canton's historic Jones Building. Located at 130 E. Main St., it features food, drinks, and games like Skee-Ball and darts, along with TVs for watching sports. Owners Adam Anacker and Brian Stanley, also behind B&B Tavern and Butcher and Bottle, celebrated the grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by city officials. B&B Social will operate from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. For more details, visit bandbsocial.com.
STORY 2: Vets Help Canton Teen Reach Dream of Joining Marines
At 18, Alex Williams, who has faced a challenging life in group homes and foster care, dropped out of high school and struggled with a sense of purpose. Determined to find discipline, he set his sights on joining the Marines, but lacked a high school diploma. With no financial or family support, Williams received help from Jim Lindenmayer of the Cherokee County Homeless Veterans Program. Lindenmayer arranged for Williams to stay at a Canton motel and provided support for him to pass the General Education Development Test. Williams scored well above the minimum required and is set to start Marine recruit training at Parris Island, SC on today. Celebrated at a luncheon on August 22, Williams cut a ceremonial cake, marking the start of his new journey.
STORY 3: Cherokee Inline Roller Hockey Rink Gets Resurfacing Contract
The Woodstock Recreation Center’s inline roller hockey rink is set to be resurfaced following a $58,000 agreement approved by the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners on August 20. Talbot Tennis won the contract after submitting the lowest and most comprehensive bid among five vendors. The rink, primarily used by the Cherokee Hockey In-Line League (CHILL), will receive a major renovation for the first time since its 1996 construction. CHILL is contributing $29,000, with the rest covered by Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds. For details about CHILL, visit [chillhockey.org]

STORY 4: Canton DDA Buys Property For Future Redevelopment
The Canton Downtown Development Authority (DDA) has acquired 2.5 acres in downtown Canton for $4.3 million, aiming to redevelop the area with potential plans for a multi-level building featuring retail, offices, or a hotel. This purchase, including parcels between North Street and the Cherokee County Justice Center, builds on a previous acquisition of a 2.4-acre law firm site in May 2023. The DDA has also engaged Goodwyn Mills Cawood for a $120,000 conceptual design and surveying project to explore mixed-use opportunities. City officials are working on a housing transition plan for current residents and integrating feedback from a recent downtown master plan. This redevelopment aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance downtown infrastructure and potentially include a new hotel and conference facility.
STORY 5: Canton Man Convicted of Possession of Sawed-Off Shotgun
Matthew Miller, 35, was convicted on August 23 by a Cherokee County jury for possessing a sawed-off shotgun. The conviction followed a three-day trial where the jury deliberated for over three hours. The case arose from a May 26, 2023, search warrant execution at Miller's Canton home, where authorities found a loaded, illegally modified shotgun with one round in the chamber and five in the magazine. The trial included testimony from five witnesses and evidence such as bodycam footage and the shotgun itself. Sentencing will be scheduled at a later date.
