Welcome to a new series on Christian Anthropology!
Today kids off the series with some discussion on what a human being is from a Christian perspective. And see the notes below from Father Dave on some explanation of what's in today's episode.
CONTEXT: Vatican II (1962-1965)

In his first papal encyclical Redeemer of Man (Latin: Redemptor Hominis), JPII emphasizes the great achievement of Vatican II's Pastoral Constitution in the Modern World (Latin: Gaudium et Spes).

A tireless champion for advancing the religious freedom of all people, JPII also was a crucial supporter of Vatican II's Declaration on Religious Freedom (Latin: Dignitatis Humanae), arguing that the Church could not insist on its own freedom from Communist oppression unless it extended full religious freedom to non-Catholics in staunchly Catholic countries such as Spain, Portugal and Ireland.

VATICAN II [Also, Second Vatican Council: 1962-1965]

Vatican II was the 21st ecumenical council to be convened in the Church's bimillennial history, and gathered nearly a century after Pope Pius IX convoked Vatican I (1869-70).

It was the Spirit-driven response of Pope Saint John XXIII to what he viewed as the alarming spiritual impoverishment of modern society resulting from the deep social and political transformations, which according to John XXII, demanded a new response from the Church. Unlike previous ecumenical councils, this response of the Church would not be an issuing of condemnations but rather a hopeful and positive elucidation of the Catholic Faith designed to persuade and inspire Catholics and non-Catholics alike to encounter Christ Jesus as Lord, Savior and King.

Throughout Vatican II, 16 authoritative documents are promulgated addressing a wide variety of matters both within the Church as well as the Church's proper place in the world.

ENCYCLICAL

An encyclical is a papal "pastoral letter." Typically addressing matters of faith or morals, encyclicals are issued to offer greater understanding and practice of the Catholic Faith.
