Originally a songwriter from Arkansas, Randy Barber moved to Nashville to try his hand at writing hits with some of the best on Music Row. He soon discovered that the bar for great material was set high, and he had to make the decision to either return home, or figure out a way to become a better writer.

Soon enough, Randy discovered he had other talents more acclimated for behind the scenes of the music business, and formed his company, Bar Frog Music. Part of his company’s endeavors is focusing on what can be considered the complicated issue of music publishing.

On this episode, we talk about royalties, how radio has a play in that stake (or doesn’t), and how independent artists have opportunities to succeed, where previously those opportunities were not available to them. We just have to remember where terrestrial radio equated to one to many, social media, and streaming platforms are one to one, which can level the playing field for today’s independent artist.
