In this episode, Eva and Bethany had a conversation about their breastfeeding journeys and Eva's innovative breast pump. Eva and her husband discovered that breast pumps did not effectively mimic the complex motion of infant suckling, leading them to embark on a research and development project to create a pump that accurately replicated suckling. With the support of the University of Galway, they were able to delve into the details and create a pump that not only looked like suckling but also replicated all the functionalities, providing a solution for breastfeeding mothers. They successfully created a working product and launched a Kickstarter campaign for moms to purchase the Calla manual breast pump.
About Eva:

Founder Eva Nagy-Gannon is a mom, who breastfed both her boys and struggled with breast pumps. “It was painful, and I could barely pump any milk. I tried different brands, different flange sizes and inserts, but nothing worked. The worst thing was that it made me think I don’t have enough milk for my baby, which was absolutely not the case. I remember the day when someone posted an ultrasound video of an infant suckling and one thing became absolutely obvious to me: this is definitely not what my breast pump is doing…” Eva set out on a mission to develop a technology to make breast pumps not suck, but suckle. She received a 2-year funding through the University of Galway where they worked with scientists and engineers to pin down the key functions of the suckling tongue and recreate it in a device that mimics suckling. After many iterations, the Calla manual breast pump was born.

“5 Actions to mimic the tongue: latch, compression, positioning, vacuum, sequencing.”

The Calla manual breast pump

Introducing Calla, the only wearable manual breast pump. The groundbreaking aspect of the Calla pump is the fact that it truly mimics the actions of the suckling tongue, but the design features are just as valuable.
