One of the most commonly mentioned goals in the voice arts is that of "finding your authentic voice" (so much so that it even saw me put that phrase in quotes due to it having been rendered nearly a stereotype from over-use): that authentic voice that is your natural, base-line, foundational voice, and comes from the core of who you are. When doing so, for some, that means coming to terms with things like speech impediments. For others, it may be that their voice doesn't live in a register that they want it to. But for some, that journey goes much farther, and much deeper than merely "what I sound like," and goes all the way down to "who I truly am." Bernadette "Bernie" Wagenblast is an iconic voice to millions of people, even though they might not know it, or her. For decades—and to this day—Bernie's voice guides countless travelers, commuters, and passengers through the maze that is mass transit in New York City and other areas of the Tri-State area with a calm and friendly tone that says "You're welcome here."
