In this episode of Beneath The Surface I speak with Kevin Sabo, a Queer, Grandchild of Portuguese Immigrants ,advocate for democratic reforms, like proportional representation, and an old friend of mine. Kevin discusses some historical context on Direct Proportional Voting and also provides a roadmap to how Direct Proportional Voting can become a reality in the United States. Lastly he shares a bold and progressive plan to introduce The Representation of the People Act, which would transform California into a multiparty democracy.

Kevin’s Bio

Kevin has been an advocate for democratic reforms, like proportional representation, for nearly a decade. His experiences growing up in California's Central Valley taught him the painful consequences of America's broken democracy. Kevin is queer, the grandchild of Portuguese immigrant dairy workers, and the child of a parent who was incarcerated for nonviolent drug offenses. He became actively involved in politics during California's same-sex marriage debate. Despite being homeless as an undergraduate at a university that could've afforded to house him, Kevin represented millions of students in the community college and University of California system as a student leader. Now a civil servant working on justice policy in Sacramento, Kevin is promoting a measure he authored called the Representation of the People Act, which would transform California into a multiparty democracy capable of representing the multitudes of our identities.
