The Book of Job God Answers Job 38:1 (NIV) – [1] Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm. 1. God often speaks to us out of the storms of life. Job 38:2 (NIV) – [2] “Who is this that darkens my counsel with words without knowledge? Mark 11:27-33 (NIV) – [27] They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. [28] “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?” [29] Jesus replied, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. [30] John’s baptism — was it from heaven, or from men? Tell me!” [31] They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ [32] But if we say, ‘From men’…" (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.) [33] So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.” Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.” 2. Our questioning God is often rooted in our unbelief and lack of trust. Romans 1:5 (NIV) – [5] Through him [Jesus Christ] and for his name’s sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. 3. God isn’t just looking for obedience; He is looking for obedience that comes from faith. “Darken” means to withhold light from, to hide, to obscure, to confuse. “Counsel” means the plans, purposes, and wisdom of God. 4. When we use human reasoning to define God, we distort the truth, and we darken His counsel. 5. We don’t just need more information ABOUT God; we need a greater revelation OF God. Job 38:3 (NIV) – [3] Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. 6. If we question God on our terms, then we’d better get ready to answer Him on His terms. Job 38:4 (NIV) – [4] “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. 7. When God speaks, we realize how very little we really know.
