Their bloodlust demands that an anthology movie does battle with itself, in the ANTHOLOGY DEATHMATCH! Will these depraved despots ever release and discuss their captives from the DUNGEON OF DIRECTORS? Or are they too busy carving up someone's career in another ACTOR AUTOPSY? We visit a boarding school with a group of Christmas killers who plan to summon a demon in The Sacrifice Game (2023). We then join a family driving to a holiday gathering who take a shortcut to nowhere in Dead End (2003). Come with us and meet a signalman who is just trying to do his job, but a pesky spectre keeps bothering him in The Signalman (1976). And then from there, let's enjoy a family Christmas at home, with some parents who probably wish that they had not been so creative, with a favorite episode from Tales from the Darkside .…

Overshadowed by its sequel, is there any reason to watch the original movie in this series? The Common Craig argues its merit as a slasher-style horror film with a science fiction coat of paint. Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as a seemingly unstoppable cyborg from the future, sent to the past to wipe out any Sarah Conner that gets in its sights. Grab your phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range, and join us for a 40th anniversary celebration of The Terminator (1984)! Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) finds herself in a difficult position, after making an impulsive, even criminal decision. After a nice shower, of course. And if she can avoid a run-in with Norman's mother. It's Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960)! And then from there, a young woman experiencing her first pregnancy, finds herself unusually isolated and alone in a New York City apartment building. Well, you'd better believe that a determined witch-hunter follows to try to stop him! Julian Sands is Warlock (1989)! Not into warlocks and all that stuff? Well, how about Julian Sands as an infuriatingly meek surgeon who opportunistically uses a hit-and-run accident to imprison, and physically alter, the woman of his dreams? Probably not a particularly healthy thing to do. It's a story of obsession and possession, with some questionable acting. But hey, if Boxing Helena (1993) is a match for your fetish, you do you. And then from there, if you thought that the acting in Boxing Helena was bad, get ready for some of the most remarkably poor acting you have ever seen from a complete cast. Thankfully, Julian Sands returns as the warlock, the one marginal bright spot. Though it probably would have helped if these actors had some decent dialogue to work with. However, as it stands, Warlock: The Armageddon (1993) is probably best used as a device to torture your enemies.…

1:09:34Send us a text So you heard us talking about our live podcast at Cape Con, but you were unable to attend? Well, you're in luck! We take you back to the beginnings of comic book horror, and then discuss two horror films adapted from comics. It's a comic book movie team-up featuring Edward Scissorhands and Hagrid from the Harry Potter series! Kind of. You do get Johnny Depp and Robbie Coltrane on the same team, investigating the menace tormenting Heather Graham's character, along with other ladies of the night, on the streets of Victorian-era London. Could it possibly be Jack the Ripper? Whoever it is, they are clearly From Hell (2001)! And then from there, let's go to Alaska, where Josh Hartnett is the youthful, handsome sheriff in a town that will be without sunlight for thirty days in winter. Nothing necessarily wrong with that, I suppose, as long as you are not a victim of seasonal affective disorder. Of course, there may be other problems. Like a group of vampires coming to town. Yeah, that could result in 30 Days of Night (2007) being a lot more challenging.…

1:24:43Send us a text There were Japanese horror movies made in the 1980s? Yes, it's true. Not all Japanese horror comes from the late 90s and early 2000s. Let's find out what Japanese filmmakers were doing with horror late in the decade, as we put a wrap on the Summer of the 80s! There's no Bruce Campbell anywhere in sight. And Sam Raimi did not direct this. We also did not see Ted Raimi around anywhere! Okay, so the U.S. title may be a little misleading. But hey, when you work in late night television, and you put out a request for viewers to send in tapes, you have to expect that you'll receive some interesting material. Is that a legitimate snuff film, though? Well, I guess that we as the viewers had better investigate with this team from the studio. But I'm afraid that we all might just end up falling into the Evil Dead Trap (1988)! Is this the Japanese equivalent of Eraserhead ? I guess, maybe. Back in the 90s, this kind of became an endurance test, an instant cult movie making the rounds on VHS among friends, if you could find it in the local video store. An endurance test? But it's only an hour and seven minutes, you say. The runtime may not be long, but let's just say that the violence and subject matter can make this an overwhelming experience for some. Get ready for the polarizing, experimental metal fetish extravaganza, Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989)! And then from there, we may as well close out the decade with the Common Craig's Top 5 Horror Movies from 1988 and 1989!…

Guns, explosions, bank robberies, murder! Stealing Ferraris! And cassettes from a music store? When will this madness end? Well, probably when a cop and an FBI agent put the awkward "getting to know you" phase behind them and get to work. Enough with the awkward dinners at home, go find this maniac! But even with all of the destruction left in its wake, finding this villain might be more challenging than you think. Because they're chasing, The Hidden (1987)! John Carpenter reveals to us, a well-kept secret in a run-down church in Los Angeles. A canister of primordial liquid, locked from the inside, guarded by The Brotherhood of Sleep. If this sounds intriguing, then you may want to put your skills in mathematics and science to the test, and join the group of grad students who are working to unravel this ancient religious mystery. Or some mutated zombie, and somehow not a pile of dust. Of course, if you were sleeping in a steel-reinforced projection booth, you're probably fine to go on living in this apocalyptic place. And city streets seemed bad enough in the 80s. So, I can only assume that the sewers were even worse. C.H.U.D. (1984) seems to verify that. There are some kind of weird mutants down there. Death to snake movies that fail to deliver enough wriggling, writhing action! Long live the Summer of the 80s! And hello Canada! Ah, the Common Craig's dreams of being some sort of video pirate, intercepting broadcasts, potentially seeing things that no one should see! Yeah, after watching Videodrome (1983), it really seems more like a nightmare scenario, I guess. Leave it to David Cronenberg to get me all worked up, and then slap me in the face with the potential horrors you may encounter. Best to leave these problems to James Woods and Debbie Harry. They're into some kinky stuff in this one. As a snake movie connoisseur, I would appreciate this devil serpent getting more screen time. But maybe that's why the title really has nothing to do with this giant snake. Because they ran out of money during the production and could barely get it in front of the camera! The Hollywood budget and prestige of a polished Steven Spielberg production, and the raw sleaze and special effects of a $35,000 movie shot on the grimy streets of early 80s New York City. If one of your family members starts talking to static on a television, you might want to consider packing up and moving immediately. But is static on television even a thing anymore? There's content 24/7! The TV people talking through the static are probably safer than the people talking to you on the actual shows! Wait, what were we talking about? Spirits and supernatural spookiness! And real skeletons in swimming pools! Leave the bodies where they are, kick back and relax, and watch some Poltergeist (1982)! What's in the basket? A picturesque coastal town is the setting for the local residents to just kill people off whenever they feel like it. The local sheriff does his best to solve these mysterious deaths, but who can he trust? Especially when the mortician seems so into the art of perfectly preserving these corpses. You may not want to visit Potter's Bluff, or you could run the risk of becoming Dead & Buried (1981). A divided Berlin becomes the backdrop for a family drama. Certainly no elements of horror here. Not at all. The intense, explosive, at times, end of a relationship, and the disconcerting beginning of another. But what is that thing that Anna has in that apartment? And why has she become so obsessed? Possession (1981) has scenes that must be seen to be believed. And then from there, it's the Common Craig's Top 5 list of horror movies from 1981! The neighborhood will never be the same after a visit from Krampus (2015). And then from there, the spirit of an executed criminal finds its way into a foul-mouthed gingerbread cookie! No, I'm not lying, this is a real movie. Get ready to take a bite out of The Gingerdead Man (2005)!…

3:13:20Send us a text It may be November, but Halloween still haunts us. And YOU, if you dare listen to The Final Chapter of the 18th Annual A-Z of Horror Festival! It's a festival first! A guest host! As the Common Craig's sister, Average Amy, creeps out of that casket in the root cellar, to help us sink our fangs into the original mini-series adaptation of Stephen King's Salem's Lot (1979). Vampires, the Marsten House, and a lot of small town 70s drama. If you can't manage to find something that offends you at least a little bit in this movie, you're even more disturbed than the Common Craig. Good for you. This is THE Troma movie. The original monster hero born out of toxic waste. The Toxic Avenger (1984)! If you're going to make a run at following Scream during the 90s slasher resurgence, you'd better have a good gimmick. And some attractive, young, up-and-coming talent. Plus horror veterans like Danielle Harris, Brad Dourif and Robert Englund. Does it work? Or is Urban Legend (1998) as effective as Pop Rocks and soda? A television is shipped to a house instead of an institute for studies of the occult. That may not sound like a problem, but when The Video Dead (1987) emerge from that TV, even when it's unplugged, your weekend is probably going to be ruined. If you've ever wanted to take a course on skiing, you may have second thoughts after this one. I mean, you'll at least be very particular when choosing which instructors you spend time with. Because these three? They make me very uncomfortable. Just stay away from Wolf's Hole (1987). And if you decide to make some porn in middle-of-nowhere Texas, please make sure that you know who you're renting that boarding house from. Things do not go well in Ti West's X (2022). Just imagine being raised in seclusion in a cave until you're a teenager. And when you finally emerge, you know nothing of the world. When witchcraft is the base of your knowledge, learning what it means to be human may prove to be quite a struggle, but You Won't Be Alone (2022). Movie parents always seem so freaked out about their kids having imaginary friends. But with Z (2019), at least there's a very valid reason for concern.…

2:48:34Send us a text The festival continues with Part Two, featuring TEN more movies, letters I-R! We'd better get right to it! A chance encounter with a strange mist causes a man to begin to shrink! His whole body, not just...you know. What an emasculating experience for The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957). Even the cat wants to eat him! Did you see that hole in the ground? Yeah, the one with the water in the bottom. Do you think that maybe we should start making human sacrifices and pour blood into it? Yeah? I think it's a great plan, too! That's Jug Face (2013). I've always heard that Australia is such a beautiful place. And seemingly all of the wildlife there is ultra-deadly. But now you might just wake up with a stone of death on your pillow! And then one of those ultra-deadly animals is going to kill you, because you're marked for death. Not in the Steven Seagal way, but in the Kadaicha (1988) way. Look fellas, Elaine Parks may be a tempting sight, but you may want to avoid drinking anything that she prepares for you. You may fall so deeply for The Love Witch (2016), that it kills you. What is deadlier than one mummy hand? TWO mummy hands! But the title only mentions one. Sorry. It's the first sequel to the Universal Monsters classic, The Mummy's Hand (1940)! What Linnea Quigley's character does with that lipstick is really the stand-out scene. Can anything else possibly liven up this Night of the Demons (1988)? Is it just me, or has Carol Kane always seemed just a tiny bit on the verge of becoming completely unhinged? Well, Office Killer (1997) has fulfilled that fantasy for me. A Japanese silent film that was lost for nearly forty-five years, then rediscovered in a shed by its director? An interesting film preservation method for A Page of Madness (1926). Is that villa actually haunted by the spirit of a nymphomaniac? Or is the brain of Franco Nero's character just a little bit of a mess? Let's visit A Quiet Place in the Country (1968) and try to find out. Unrequited love. Such a difficult situation to live with. Especially when you've been manipulated. But the answer is not going to Cambodia and using a zombie formula against your rival! Well, it is in Revolt of the Zombies (1936).…

It's time for the 18th Annual A-Z of Horror Festival! Part one consists of entries A-H. Gear up for a wild Mexican exploitation ride, with enough evil to set your Satan detector into PANIC mode! Curse the day you meet Alucarda (1977)! A malevolent mound of muck begins devouring everything in a small mountain town, thanks to some updated 80s special effects. Is it an alien entity, or government conspiracy? One thing is for sure, it's The Blob (1988)! If you are running a struggling funeral parlor, killing off local townspeople may seem like a logical solution. But you have to make sure that you actually kill them! Vincent Price, Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff certainly have their problems offing Basil Rathbone in The Comedy of Terrors (1963). Hammer makes an attempt to appeal to groovy 70s kids, by bringing the classic Dracula versus Van Helsing feud out of their regular gothic trappings, and into the modern age. Dracula A.D. 1972 (1972) is such a giggle, man! Doris Wishman filmed this next one during her comeback run at age 89, in 2002. That's probably the most interesting thing about Each Time I Kill (2007), other than John Waters making a cameo appearance! Geena Davis begins to worry about Jeff Goldblum, as he is not quite himself after what seemed like a successful teleportation attempt using his recent invention. Unfortunately, he didn't anticipate what would happen should an uninvited guest join him in the telepod. Things get buggy in David Cronenberg's full-on body horror version of The Fly (1986)! Brad Dourif and James Earl Jones try to outdo each other, spinning spooky yarns around the campfire, in the western-themed horror anthology, Grim Prairie Tales (1990). And an accident strands a family, putting them in a battle for their lives against a desert clan who will eat any kind of meat that they can get their hands on! Kurt Russell stars in this 80s box office flop turned cult film sensation, as Jack Burton, a truck driver who uses his swaggering bravado to mask the fact that he is completely inept at pretty much everything. When a stop in San Francisco has him witnessing the kidnapping of his friend's fiancée, the resulting adventures in Chinatown leave Jack feeling completely out of his element. But to be fair, how many people would feel comfortable stumbling into a back alley funeral procession that becomes a war? 2:58:50Send us a text Nicole catches a break, sitting out the majority of this episode before the A-Z of Horror season comes to consume her! We also try our best to come up with a top five of our favorite horror video games. But this is us, so if you're expecting your favorite title to make the top five, you're probably out of luck. This is a movie podcast, though! So I couldn't let Brother Brian get away without making him suffer through a really odd video game movie adaptation for the second time in his life. The Mushroom Kingdom from the games already seems like it emerged from a drug-fueled haze. But what the hell were the writers on when they came up with this script? The main characters don't even wear their proper attire from the games until the movie is halfway over! And Goombas are large reptilian humanoids with tiny heads? Huh? And yes, that is the proper response after watching Super Mario Bros. (1993). Huh? At least the next movie kind of sticks to the basics of the gameplay from the source material. Kicking. Punching. Martial arts action. Robert Patrick is no longer a Terminator, but he's still a villain, and he really wants the two pieces of this shiny golden medallion. Why? I don't know. Brother Brian tries to explain it, so just listen to the episode. Billy (no, not Bimmy) and Jimmy Lee are the brothers in futuristic 2007 New Angeles, who must save not only the medallion, but also local viewers from being subjected to Vanna White and George Hamilton as newscasters! 2:27:27Send us a text What do a vampire, a pregnant lady, a pious nurse, a film censor, and an urban legend have in common? They're the main characters that appear in the final part of our trilogy of episodes focusing on women horror directors. Get ready for some fresh new blood, as we discuss five movies from the past ten years! I don't know about you, but if I lived in a place called Bad City, I may not be too excited to be out walking alone at night. Of course, if I were a vampire, I would probably be a lot more confident about it. Which just happens to be the case in Ana Lily Amirpour's A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014). Not having the personal experience, I cannot be certain, but it seems like pregnancy might make me want to kill people, just in general. But her unborn child is actually very demanding about Ruth knocking off certain people. I guess that it probably just doesn't feel right telling her no. Which leads to a little Prevenge (2016), from writer, director, star Alice Lowe. Maud seems like a responsible, polite caregiver. As long as you don't mind that she gets a little hung up on saving your soul. And she might have a history of doing things that are somewhat unhinged. Filmmaker Rose Glass introduces us to Saint Maud (2019) Ah, the video nasty era. The perfect setting for a horror movie about a film censor. But Enid cannot seem to let go of a tragic event from her past. It's an obsession that leads her down a path of self-destruction in Prano Bailey-Bond's Censor (2021). Didn't we talk about this guy before? We sure did! But this is a totally different guy. Director Nia DaCosta lets us in on a little secret. That a number of unfortunate souls have been cursed to fill this role. Try your best to stay away from mirrors! And definitely don't say Candyman (2021) five times!…

2:45:32Send us a text More women! More horror! Directors. And movies. We're right in the middle of a three-part series on horror movies directed by women! This episode features very strong evidence that sometimes dead is better, a young girl who dreams of creepy storybook characters while rabbits run wild in Australia, western expansion and cannibalism in the 19th-century, and a promising medical student driven to pursue an unconventional surgical career. Stephen King should be ashamed of himself. He gave a perfectly respectful graveyard honoring animals such a bad rap. It's a place where the dead speak. But you certainly do not want to go beyond, to the place where the dead walk! Director Mary Lambert takes us there and back again, in the first feature film adaptation of Pet Sematary (1989). Political tension, and rabbit panic are running wild in Australia in 1957. A young girl struggles with forbidden friendships, the death of her grandmother, the threat of her pet rabbit being taken away, and even her own imagination. Childhood proves to be a very challenging experience for Celia (1989), directed by Ann Turner. It's manifest destiny time in the United States. But some of these characters are definitely not who you would hope to encounter if you were heading west in the mid-1800s. Director Antonia Bird serves up a darkly comedic adventure of gruesome cannibalism, with some truly unsettling music setting the tone, in Ravenous (1999)! Ah, Katharine Isabelle is featured in the role of Mary Mason. A promising young medical student, who uses her skill to perform underground body modification surgeries. But why would she leave medical school for such a pursuit? Well, money. And revenge. The Soska Sisters invite you to spend a little time under the knife, with American Mary (2012).…

1:54:18Send us a text We take a little journey through horror history, with a three-part series focusing on films directed by women. Let's get things started with a psychopathic hitchhiker, a horny desert vampire, a toxic monster, and a denim-clad driller killer! A pioneer in women's filmmaking, Ida Lupino directs a claustrophobic movie set in the wide open desert, that is in truth more classic film noir than horror. What would you do if the guy you just picked up on the side of the road told you that he was going to kill you? It's just a matter of when. Maybe you should at least consider killing him first, in The Hitch-Hiker (1953). Roger Corman disciple, Stephanie Rothman decides to keep us in the desert a little longer, as she directs a film that really wants to be arty and erotic. A couple is invited to the desert home of a mysterious woman who has designs on getting both of them in the sack. But wow, it's a little challenging to get interested in the sexuality when the acting is somewhat lacking, to say the least. But hey, if you're into that sort of thing, The Velvet Vampire (1971) may just become a cult favorite for you. Less than a year after we discussed Blood Diner (1987), we thought that we had better check out Jackie Kong's first feature film. Pottsville, Idaho. They love potatoes, but they will sweep away smut. So don't even think about opening that massage parlor in their town! Radioactive toxic waste is fine, though. Until some kid goes missing and becomes a mutated toxic monster that rips off heads and delivers one hell of a heart punch, in The Being (1981) And how many people would guess that The Slumber Party Massacre (1982), written by Rita Mae Brown, was also directed by a woman, Amy Holden Jones? With an escaped serial killer on the loose, stalking teenage girls (but he likes the boys, too), it's not difficult to figure out what that enormous power drill he carries around is supposed to represent. This 80s slasher VHS rental favorite might be a lot more fun than you expect.…

2:16:47Send us a text Beware the beat of the cloth-wrapped feet! From tombs beneath the scorching desert sand, it's a four-way battle to the death! Which movie endures the curse and earns the right to be called The Mummy? Contender 1: The Mummy (1932). Boris Karloff, fresh off of his sensational performance as Frankenstein's monster a year earlier, has become THE theatrical attraction for Universal Pictures! So why not dig up another role for the uncanny Karloff? But since Bela Lugosi had already delivered as the world's most famous vampire, how about a Dracula-like tale of another cursed creature who rises from a tomb? Contender 2: The Mummy (1959). Not to be outdone, Hammer Films were on a roll with their own interpretations of colorful classic monsters. Their early horrors seemed most effective when starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, which should be a given. But the behind the camera pairing of director Terence Fisher and writer Jimmy Sangster owe a great deal to the quality and success, as well. Contender 3: The Mummy (1999). We jump ahead forty years, to an Indiana Jones-inspired adventure movie, with 90s-perfected CGI special effects. But how well do those visual effects hold up more than twenty years later? It does seem as though the new millennium era cast of attractive young faces, led by Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and Arnold Vosloo, may be the only visuals that many viewers are concerned about. Contender 4: The Mummy (2017). It was supposed to be a new launching point for Universal's attempt at a classic monster-filled cinematic "Dark Universe." But even the star power of Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe could not prevent this from becoming a critical and financial failure. Is this new tale, which seems to want to incorporate some of the 1999 film's adventure elements, with the wrinkle of a female mummy, really as bad as its reputation would have you believe?…

1:21:42Send us a text Time to wrap up our little horror vacation to Mexico, but we've saved two of the best for last! Both featuring children as the primary characters. Along with a Mexican movie set in France and filmed in English. Madness, you say? You would not be wrong. And with madness we begin! We visit a sanatorium, curious about the methods the doctor uses to treat his patients. However, it does not take longer than a few short minutes to realize that the patients may actually be running the asylum. You too may require treatment for your own mental illness, that develops from having viewed The Mansion of Madness (1973)! We spend a little more time with Carlos Enrique Taboada, as he delivers an absolute treasure of a film. Two girls in need of friendship, find each other and seem to make a connection. Though they may not be the best fit, as manipulation and blackmail do not seem to make for lasting relationships. A character piece, with a phenomenal pair of young actors, Poison for the Fairies (1986) is essential slow-burn horror, paying off with a disturbing finale. And then from there, orphaned children from the violent streets of Mexico, are aided by vengeful supernatural forces, in their quest for revenge against the gang leaders who took their families from them. Again, incredible child actors make this movie a very special experience, as writer/director Issa Lopez delivers a tale of modern urban horror in Tigers Are Not Afraid (2017).…

1:25:41Send us a text Yo, yo, yo, let me speak on this! Orale! Arriba la raza! Join us as we hope to regale you with discussions of our movie experiences from our vacation to Mexico! There seems to be some debate as to whether or not we actually physically went to Mexico, but this episode covers four of the experiences that we claim to have had, so we'll just let you decide. Folklore, ghosts, the struggle for eternal life, and an odd phenomenon in a bus station! First a bit of classic horror, featuring one of the most infamous legends of Mexican folklore. This has been a popular character to be utilized on film in more recent years, including a movie set in The Conjuring universe. However, this version is billed as the first sound horror film in Mexican history. And with a character known as the wailing woman, this is definitely a good use of that sound! Beware the curse of La Llorona (1933)! A boarding school girl hears her name on the wind, and dreams of a tower on campus that is off-limits to the students. When the tower door is suddenly unlocked, a group of girls who are forced to remain at school during vacation as a disciplinary measure, become very curious about a rumored happening that once took place in the forbidden structure. You know that things are going to get a little spooky when Even the Wind is Afraid (1968)! A mysterious device created by an alchemist becomes the centerpiece of a story with ties to one of the most familiar sub-genres of horror. Sought after by those who desire its power, the device falls into the hands of an unsuspecting antique dealer, and he soon discovers that he may not be able to live without it. It's Guillermo del Toro's feature film directorial debut, Cronos (1993). And then from there, a remote bus station outside of Mexico City welcomes a gathering of strangers during a torrential downpour in 1968. But one individual is singled out as a villain, as it seems he may be responsible for a rather odd series of occurrences involving the physical appearance of the others. What the hell is going on in The Similars (2015)?…

I haven't seen a hat or a red and green striped sweater, so I may be safe. But those Elm Street kids? Not so much. Freddy Krueger and his seven minutes of screen time may just prove to be more than they can handle, in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). And then from there, a little bonus coverage from the same year in cinema. A movie that is seemingly unrelated, but manages to share a few elements. Coincidence? Well, a young Dennis Quaid is conned into using his psychic abilities in a dream-manipulation study, rather than gambling at the track. Did you ever have a baby alligator as a pet when you were a child? And now that you've grown, are you a herpetologist? But most importantly, did that baby alligator ever get flushed down a toilet? Because if it did, thanks a lot. It now lives in a Missouri sewer system and it's eating people! And sometimes crashing weddings. Where it also eats people. But when a hurricane hits home, the levees break, and your father foolishly did not evacuate the area, you may find yourself in these types of predicaments. Oh, and there's a crawlspace. Which is why this movie is called Crawl (2019). You know those novelty energy plasma balls that were all the rage in the 80s? Well, this movie has a lot of them. And the filmmakers seem to be determined to bring back the hula hoop, by suggesting that it would make an irresistible accessory for erotic dance exhibitions. Yeah, other than Reb Brown, and poor Cameron Mitchell (in a bad Santa beard), those are the most interesting parts of Space Mutiny (1988). And then from there, it's the revenge of Bruno Mattei! This time, we're subjected to the Italian version of a certain Schwarzenegger jungle romp, featuring a not-so human hunter, stalking its prey. And when you can't get Arnold, Reb Brown seems like the obvious choice for option number two. Get ready for severed limbs, melting corpses, and plenty of digital vocalizing, in Robowar (1988)!…

2:38:27Send us a text The ultimate experience in grueling podcasting! Wow, I'm pretty confident that no one has ever thought to use that before. It's episode 72. Evil Dead 2 just had its 35th anniversary. So why not celebrate Bruce Campbell, Nicole's love for Ted Raimi, and Craig's love of bodily dismemberment? We begin with the ultimate experience in creative, low budget horror filmmaking. Okay, so maybe the premise of five young people going to a cabin, and demonic possession isn't the most original idea ever. But The Evil Dead (1981) is easily the most straight horror entry of the series. And what the filmmakers lack in cash, is certainly more than compensated for in style. In the sequel, Bruce Campbell's Ash finds himself in a cabin in the woods with his girlfriend, Linda. Wait. Again? Some other characters do show up, but it's the periods of manic solo performance by Bruce Campbell, that make Evil Dead II (1987), one of the most entertaining horror comedies of all time! And then from there, we somehow end up in the year 1300 A.D., where Ash finds himself fulfilling a prophecy, as a would-be hero. But how long can he maintain his cocky facade, when faced with an evil duplicate of himself, leading the Army of Darkness (1992)?…

1:18:48Send us a text With the winter season fading away, The Winter of Folk Horror is thawing along with it. And while you might think that we're going out with a winter whimper, covering only three titles, we're actually going out with a buttery bang! More on that shortly. But first, Finland. Reindeer are everywhere! And much to the Common Craig's dismay, Santa is nowhere to be found. But amongst all of these reindeer, it's that special white variety of which you may want to take notice. If not, you may just fall victim to its vampiric powers, in The White Reindeer (1952)! From snowy Finland, we travel to Oregon. And there we find one of the most hopeless, depressing towns in the history of cinema. The inhabitants are probably so despondent, because at any second they could become a meal for an ancient creature with ties to cannibalism. You know, I've heard nice things about Oregon, but Antlers (2021) may delay a visit even further. And then from there, on to Iceland and the terrifying aspect of livestock horror. Do you know where YOUR butter comes from? And how to reveal its potentially evil origin? If you're not sure how to answer those questions, you should probably listen to our discussion on Tilbury (1987). Until you do, stop licking that butter!…

3:06:27Send us a text It's time for what is basically a return home for us. Witchcraft, religious cults, indigenous spirits, a cornfield deity. Pretty sure that your hosts probably had run-ins with all of those at some point in our youth, growing up in rural areas. We may as well start in New England, where a woman inherits some property, after the original heir dies in a fiery explosion. This area may have a little problem with witchcraft, but is that any reason to give up Crowhaven Farm (1970)? New England is a hotbed, let me tell you. Be careful when you buy that house, well below market value, in that quaint little village. The more secrets you unravel, the more intertwined your family may become, in The Dark Secret of Harvest Home (1978). Some families take marrying outside of their religion, or even thinking about it, very seriously. It might be a good idea to consider these things, or you could be tormented with spiders, snakes, and chickens! Don't fall victim to a Deadly Blessing (1981)! A goddess of the forest versus the devil witch of the valley? Mind-altering chemicals may be beneficial when you sit down, relax, and stare into the Eyes of Fire (1983)! Look, I know that kids can be somewhat impressionable, at times. But when some creepy new kid comes to town, telling all of the other kids that they have to slaughter the adults to appease a god in the cornfield, you may want to seek a second opinion. That's just life in Nebraska. At least it is in Children of the Corn (1984). Aggressive activist or mischievous spirit? Regardless, Graham Greene seems to have a great time taking things to the extreme, in Clearcut (1991).…

Our first stop is an ANTHOLOGY DEATHMATCH in Japan! Vengeful hair, a mysterious woman, a blind musician, and some spooky tea, go head to head to see who reigns supreme in the classic, Kwaidan (1964)! Wow, I think that we're getting kind of tired of winter, though. Let's go someplace a little warmer, okay? We'll jump ahead to Holy Week in the Philippines, where there probably aren't any spirits of the dead possessing their living family members. Oh, I'm sorry, that's exactly what happens in Itim (1976). Then we may as well stop in Thailand, where some spouses are so loyal, that they just want to hang around, even when they're ghosts. Such is the sad case in Nang Nak (1999). And then from there, it's time for a visit to the jungles of Malaysia, where a little family is doing just fine. 2:43:43Send us a text Ah, it's time for a different kind of folk horror. Hide your pet chickens and goats, because we have four movies to discuss, involving Hoodoo, Voodoo, Santeria and maybe a taste of Satanism, as well. Harry Angel, a private detective in 1955, is hired to track down an old crooner, who happens to owe a pretty serious debt. But Harry soon finds himself becoming the prime suspect for a series of murders, with unfamiliar religions and his own past bearing down on him, in Angel Heart (1987). A police psychiatrist becomes involved in an investigation of a number of cult-related child murders. Seeking allies and answers from the world of Santeria, he soon discovers that his own son may be the next target, in The Believers (1987). Dr. Alan, an anthropologist, is sent to Haiti to obtain a powder used to create zombies, in hopes of utilizing it as an anesthetic in modern medicine. But while on the trail of the powder, a sinister bokor wants to add Dr. Alan to his collection of souls, in Wes Craven's The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988). And then from there, it's a tale of infidelity and deceit, with voodoo lingering in the shadows. Experience the Southern Gothic world of Eve's Bayou (1997).…

2:27:04Send us a text The Winter of Folk Horror continues, with a bubbling cauldron of films involving witchcraft, or that boil over into persecution of perceived supernatural abilities. When I see images from our first feature in this episode, they look so old, so authentic, that they MUST be real! But it's Satan's tongue that just may be the most memorable part of Haxan (1922)! If you're seemingly the lone uninhibited woman in a small Italian village, you may be better off exercising some restraint. And if you are practicing a few spells, you probably shouldn't reveal them to anyone, for fear of being being branded as Il Demonio (1963)! One of the most notorious witch-hunters in English history, is brought to the screen by Vincent Price, in perhaps his most vile performance. Your innocence will not save you, when Matthew Hopkins, Witchfinder General (1968), rides into town. Another infuriating travesty of justice transpires, when the accused are brought before a tribunal, with profit in mind. When these methods of torture are utilized, even the most strong-willed can crack under the weight of the Witchhammer (1970). And then from there, a superstitious mountain community has labeled Albrun and her mother as witches. But is there truth in their beliefs? Or does a form of madness take hold in the isolation, that is the only life Albrun has ever known? Get ready for our take on Hagazussa (2017).…

3:01:12Send us a text The Winter of Folk Horror series begins. Part one of our celebration of folk horror, focuses on a reoccurring theme in the subgenre. People who are out their element, ultimately making poor choices, putting themselves in undesirable, usually unsafe, situations. A woman finds herself seemingly being manipulated by the eccentric inhabitants of a small village. As they seem to be guiding her toward a potential mate, she becomes suspicious that her life may actually be at risk, in Robin Redbreast (1970). Edward Woodward is a police sergeant, investigating the disappearance of a young girl on the remote island of Summerisle. However, when Christopher Lee, the island's leader, and the rest of the locals seem completely unconcerned, it becomes evident that they have something special planned for an upcoming pagan celebration, in The Wicker Man (1973). How does a movie about a pair of hitmen find a way to cross over into the world of folk horror? Hey, you'll have to listen to us discuss Kill List (2011), to find out. A group of friends honor the memory of someone they've lost, by following through on a suggested hiking trip. But when they attempt a shortcut through an unfamiliar forest, they find themselves at the mercy of unknown forces, in The Ritual (2017). And then from there, in an attempt to rescue his kidnapped sister, a man finds himself infiltrating a religious island cult, who are holding her for ransom, in Apostle (2018).…

2:43:16Send us a text It's time to rejoin the October Halloween horror action, in progress, with part two of the 17th Annual A-Z of Horror Festival! If you could choose three people to hang out and have dinner with during the spooky season, Edgar Allan Poe, Roger Corman and Vincent Price would probably be ideal. Unless, of course, everything is literally crumbling down around you. Which certainly seems to be the case with the House of Usher (1960). Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi might take exception with not being invited, but they have their own problems to contend with in The Invisible Ray (1936). And it's sad, but Jennifer (1978) may not be an ideal guest for everyone, especially if she arrives with two handfuls of serpents. Or a giant snake emerges and bites someone's head off. That's probably going to ruin the evening. Poor Paul Bartel would enjoy a fine evening of dining, but he's obligated to attend the dreadful Killer Party (1986). Princess Lola, and her reluctant date, regret to inform you that they have a night of dancing and torture, which seems like a priority in The Loved Ones (2009). Should you invite Maddie? Well, it would probably be okay. Unless she starts having visions of death. And you see some creepy thing that seems to be running around backwards. If that happens, you may want to move to a different country, because things are about to get Malignant (2021)! You could invite Janet, but it's not her birthday. And let's be honest, she's not much fun unless someone is getting stabbed. Otherwise, her paranoia is kind of a Nightmare (1964). Holland and Niles probably wouldn't make the best guests. They won't wash their hands and wouldn't sit still long enough to actually eat or have a conversation. Plus, there seem to be a lot of unfortunate accidents while they're around, as evidenced in The Other (1972). And it's a good thing that it's not New Year's Eve. Not that you would necessarily anticipate anyone dying at the dinner party. But if it happens, I suppose that you could always summon The Phantom Carriage (1921).…

Moaning egg things burst and get green goo all over unsuspecting investigators, which causes them to explode from within, causing a grisly trail of human hamburger gore. Join the coffee cult or die, in Alien Contamination (1980)! More aliens, this time invading New Zealand! Where they hack up and box up small town residents for a new intergalactic fast food sensation. Only "The Boys" can stop, or more likely contribute to, the absurdity of Bad Taste (1987)! Imagine getting married, only to discover that if your spouse becomes aroused, they may rip you to shreds. Better keep some catnip on hand! It the classic Val Lewton production, Cat People (1942). Still shinin' after all these years (thanks, Miles)! Adult Dan Torrance, still tormented by the Overlook Hotel, uses its powers against a new threat, in Doctor Sleep (2019). 2:37:22Send us a text When a pair of New Yorkers create a British production studio, you get Amicus! Generally considered to be the primary rival of Hammer Films, as far as British horror output, in the 1960s and 70s. And if Amicus were the masters of one thing, it was the horror anthology film. We've chosen three of their anthology classics to square off, head-to-head, in our Anthology Deathmatch format! First up, with stories based on those featured in classic EC Comics, is a classic title. One which many will have heard before. But we're not talking about the HBO television series. We're talking about the original feature film outing, Tales from the Crypt (1972)! The next deathmatch competitor, is another title taken from classic EC horror comics. Because beneath the crypt lies The Vault of Horror (1973)! And then from there, the stories of author R. Chetwynd-Hayes are featured within our final deathmatch combatant. Peter Cushing invites you to shop his antiques in Temptations Limited. He might cut you a deal, even if you're naughty. But you might end up paying the ultimate price in From Beyond the Grave (1974)!…

1:50:05Send us a text It's the Common Craig's birthday! And it's our 50th episode! What a wonderful time for an 80s Italian splatterfest! First up, be very cautious when accepting free passes to a movie theater. You might end up with a bunch of random people who start turning into demons. Then they'll start getting blood, green goo and pus all over you. Demons (1985) is generally not a pretty sight. And if you live in a large apartment complex, where someone is having a birthday party, you should probably be careful, too. Because they might be watching a documentary involving the events of the first movie, causing a demon to invade their apartment, which sets things up perfectly for the inevitable sequel, Demons 2 (1986). And then from there, you think that you're probably safe in The Church (1989), right? Yeah, until it goes on lockdown due to an automated mechanism, after someone is messing around in the bowels of the building, unleashing an ancient evil!…

Then, those same troublesome invaders crash-land in small-town California (and all over the world) in the special effects spectacular, The War of the Worlds (1953). Wells himself, then creates his own device to explore the distant future of the year 802,701, in the George Pal produced and directed, The Time Machine (1960). And that's what we have in this episode, as we discuss four movies that we were both seeing for the first time! And the catch is, they all had theatrical releases THIS year! These are movies that we should have seen in theaters, and maybe we would have, if there wasn't some crazy pandemic going on! So we rented them, instead. We kick things off with a dive into the ocean, seven miles deep. Just what sort of madness might be lurking in the depths of Underwater (2020)? Then, we take a holiday trip to a cabin with two kids and their father's new girlfriend. But it's quite possible that this kind of seclusion may not be the best for those with psychological instability. Prepare yourself for the torment of The Lodge (2019, but released theatrically in 2020). Speaking of torment, have you ever had a horrible, emotionally abusive relationship from which you can never seem to escape? You should really have a talk with Cecilia from The Invisible Man (2020), because she's clearly an expert on the subject. But has she completely lost her mind? And then from there, Vin Diesel is back! And he's ready to lay the smack...oh, wait. That's someone else. But Vin Diesel IS back. As the Valiant Comics (yes, I said Valiant) superhero soldier guy, Bloodshot (2020). And from what I know about Vin Diesel movies, he's probably going to rough some people up! AND I'm probably going to doze off while he's doing it.…

52:43Send us a text If you despise REALLY long episodes, you're finally in luck! After that marathon 80s vampire episode, the Common Craig needed a kind of quick fix, easy-to-edit kind of break. Which means that we start the episode with some requisite whining, of course. And then from there, it's time to discuss ONE movie. Yes, just one. And no, it's not going to be for all tastes. But leave it to writer/director Ken Russell to amp up the depravity with some kinky, campy fun involving a pagan snake cult. But this is a British production! So, that totally brings any sleazy, trash, cult movie up to a level of instant respectability, right? Right. It also features Hugh Grant's finest cinematic performance. Enjoy.…

3:42:54Send us a text Get ready to celebrate the decade of excess, with an excessively long episode! That's right, we're heading back to the 1980s, as we count down the top five vampire movies from that decade. Could the Common Craig discuss those movies in under an hour? Probably. But what's the fun in that? And even as Nicole tries, she cannot possibly hope to reel the Common Craig in to make for an episode of reasonable length. But this is a discussion of 80s movies, so it seems fitting. So sharpen up those fangs (or your stakes, if you're one of THOSE people) and get ready to sink your teeth into an epic countdown! And then from there, we even discuss a few last minutes movies that we happened to watch in between recording sessions.…

1:35:29Send us a text Forget about any other movie that might share this title! The battle for supremacy is right here, right now. First up, Rachel Ward and her one-room Australian schoolhouse are invaded by masked kidnappers. Can the schoolchildren come of age, all too quickly, in a struggle for survival to escape? Rural Australia is a dangerous place in Fortress (1985). Then, it's time for international action sensation, Christopher Lambert! He and his wife are not particularly fortunate to be pregnant, it seems, as they find themselves in a futuristic prison in the year 2017! Be careful to avoid that yellow line and definitely stay away from the red! Or your tummy might just explode from the effects of that horrible intestinator that they implanted inside your body! Wait, what? This is the world of Stuart Gordon's Fortress (1992). And then from there, the Common Craig and Nicole decide the victor! Which is the last movie standing, earning the right to keep its title???…

And when you talk about rats in horror, you have to start with Willard (1971). Watch poor Willard finally gain some friends, as they scurry around on thousands of tiny little feet that do his bidding! Then get ready for the direct sequel, spotlighting a particularly clever little critter, returning from the first movie. That's right! We're talking about Ben (1972). And then from there, Crispin Glover brings some eccentric magic to a familiar story. Get ready for even MORE of Socrates and Ben, in the 2003 remake, Willard ! And if we're going to talk about Linda Blair, how can we possibly avoid discussing The Exorcist (1973)? We can't! So, we join forces with Father Merrin and Father Karras, in an attempt to expel the evil. Just watch your step on those stairs! After that, grab your skates and head for the beach! And don't forget to sign up for the roller disco contest, because that's important. Oh, yeah. They might be shutting down your favorite roller rink. And that's just the first 52 minutes of Roller Boogie (1979)! And then from there, you'd better go buy a crossbow if you want to be a true vigilante out for revenge. And then from there, wait. Is that a three-dimensional killer??? You'd better believe it is! Not only that, but I also see a few eyeballs, a harpoon, a van with a reserve gas tank, a hockey mask and a three-person biker gang. Where is that disco music coming from? OH! First, did you know that creeks lead to rivers? Well, if you didn't, the dreamy male lead in Blood and Chocolate , will be sure to educate you. It's teenage, well, maybe young adult romance, at its not so finest. Then we fall asleep while reading a magazine and begin to dream that we'll finally reach puberty, after all these years. Just in case we decide to visit a mine in Canada, anytime soon. Hey, you never know! And then from there, because you never know when two white people might want to take a trip to Italy, we should probably investigate the possibility of primordial romance in that area of the world. They all share the number 13 in their titles. First up, Antonio Banderas is pretty much forced to hang out with a bunch of vikings in The 13th Warrior , to the extent that he even has to learn their language! Ah, the wonders of communication. They even want him to drink their spit and snot! Then, Nicole would probably prefer to drink spit or snot (actually, that's highly unlikely) rather than suffer through another viewing of the oft forgotten The Thirteenth Floor .
