Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you Ever wondered what it’s like to set foot in Vietnam for the first time? Is the hype real? Or is it more like overload and no one is really talking about it. In this episode of What About Vietnam , I’m joined by Meghann – one half of the travel blogging duo behind The Grahlife – as she shares her and her husband Zach’s first impressions of Vietnam during their adventure in March 2025. From landing in Hanoi to trekking the famous Son Doong Cave, Meghann walks us through the culture shock, the sensory overload, and the unexpected joys that came with their first time in the country. We don’t just cover the obvious stuff, we talk about: Navigating the infamous traffic (Zach famously declared: "I was born for this!" after only his second street-crossing), Ordering local dishes with curiosity and courage as Meghann is Celiac. Experiencing the kindness and compassion of the Vietnamese people, unexpected! And reflecting on the powerful legacy of Vietnam’s war history and its place in the modern-day tourist landscape. Plus the best take away souvenirs you’d never think of! This is a candid, light hearted, and insightful conversation about the magic of those first encounters – the planning that went right, and the planning that didn't, the sights, the flavours, the energy – that make Vietnam such an unforgettable destination. Whether you're seeking inspiration for your next big adventure or simply want to arrive prepared, this episode offers honest insights to help you travel smarter and more confidently. 🎧 Listen now on your favourite podcast platform and don’t forget to check out the The Grah Life to follow Meghan and Zach’s journey’s and their adventure discovering Son Doong. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you Let’s get real about travel planning to Vietnam. If you're heading to Vietnam, there’s one big decision you’ll need to make early on: Should you join a packaged group tour… or plan your own trip? Do you map it out yourself—or get expert help? This isn’t a simple yes-or-no answer. It’s one of the most personal choices you’ll make in your travel planning—and one that can completely shape how you experience Vietnam. In this episode, I’m pulling back the curtain on both options, sharing the honest pros and cons, and helping you figure out which style fits you best. No fluff, no sales pitch—just personal and professional insights from years of experience as both a traveller and a travel advisor to Vietnam. Because I consider this decision one of the biggest you’ll make in setting the tone for your trip, I break down these key elements: The structure and convenience of group tours—and when they shine The freedom and deeper connection that individually planned travel can offer Why group tours can sometimes feel like a blur of bucket-list stops The trade-offs of a tightly scheduled itinerary versus one you design yourself (or with guidance) Real talk: what people loved (and didn’t) about both styles If you follow this show, you’ll know from other episodes: the best trips happen when your travel style matches who you are. Whether that’s with a group or through your own custom plan—choose what fits you. I truly believe that if you give Vietnam the thought it deserves, it will give you everything you’re looking for—and more. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you Get ready to discover a side of Vietnam that remains largely unknown to most Western visitors Vietnam’s northern provinces hold secrets beyond the usual tourist trail—and in this episode, we go “church hunting” to uncover them. Joined by my returning guest, Ha (Hannah) from S5-E18 – Hanoi Below the Surface , we explore the stunning Catholic heritage in regions like Ninh Binh and Nam Dinh. With roots dating back to the 16th century and flourishing during French colonial times, Catholicism in Vietnam has left behind a breathtaking legacy of Gothic cathedrals, convents, and monasteries. We visit iconic sites like Phú Nhai Basilica and Bùi Chù Cathedral, as well as hidden gems like the Chau Son Monastery. All in flourishing communities. Ha shares her local insights and personal reflections as we trace the footsteps of history through quiet villages brimming with faith, architectural wonder, and community spirit. If you thought Vietnam was only temples and beaches—prepare to be surprised. These soulful spaces welcome all who seek beauty, history, and a deeper connection to place. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you If you've ever felt put off by wellness retreats that seem more like boot camps — all strict schedules, silent meals, and mandatory sunrise yoga — then this episode is for you. Join me as I broadcast from the tranquil grounds of Namia River Retreat in Hoi An, where wellness takes on a much more inclusive, luxurious, and deeply personal meaning. In this episode, I sit down with Michelle Ford , GM of Namia and CEO of Lumina Wellbeing, and Dien Pham , Director of Sales and a holistic wellness practitioner in her own right. Together, we unpack what wellness travel really looks like in Vietnam — and why it's gaining serious momentum. We talk: Why Hoi An is fast becoming a wellness destination (think: beach TRX, vitamin C IV drips, traditional herbal therapy, and no-fuss spa treatments that actually relax you) The evolving post-pandemic demand for retreats that prioritise well-being without the rigidity What makes Namia’s approach to wellness more about "Inclusive wellness" and less about rules Why travellers are sleeping better here — and not just because of the mattresses And how Vietnam is carving out its own path in wellness tourism, distinct from its Southeast Asian neighbours Whether you’re curious about #wellness travel, craving a proper reset, or just want to explore Vietnam in a way that nourishes your mind and body — this episode has something for you. Tune in now to hear how Vietnam is redefining retreat life — without the hard edges. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you Hoi An continues to enchant—and in 2025, it feels overflowing, more layered, and more revealing than ever. That’s why I’ve chosen to revisit one of my most loved conversations on the show—this time with a fresh perspective, and a few heartfelt reflections from my recent trip. You’ll hear from the delightful Sharon Sweeney, a long-time visitor to Hoi An who once co-created the popular website and map guide HoiAnNow (now retired). Sharon still returns regularly, drawn—as so many of us are—by the town’s old-world charm and enduring spirit. As Hoi An grows in popularity, it’s evolving in ways that bring both beauty and complexity. With more international travellers comes more diversity, yes—but also more crowds, rising prices, and the ongoing challenge of preserving tradition in a fast-changing world. In this updated intro, I reflect on my ow personal observations, what’s new, what’s shifting, and what still stops me in my tracks and gives me great joy. This episode isn’t only about ticking 10 boxes ( as per the original show back in 2021 - S2-07 )—it’s about finding your rhythm in Hoi An, one authentic experience at a time. Stay curious, stay open—and let’s rediscover the heart of Hoi An together. The best way to connect with me is not via text, it is through the website www.whataboutvietnam.com website and email. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you In this episode of the What About Vietnam podcast, I had the pleasure of uncovering Yen Bai and Tu Le—a region and destination resort I’d describe as a true “diamond in the rough” in Vietnam. Known for its breathtaking natural beauty and minimal development, Yen Bai is perfect for those seeking tranquillity and a break from city life. Imagine being able to hear your own breath, surrounded by minimal noise and almost no traffic—just the occasional local cows and chickens. My guest, Hylton Lipkin, the General Manager of Le Champ Tu Le Resort Hot Spring & Spa Yen Bai, provided an in-depth look at what makes this area so special. I stayed at his resort, the only one of its kind in the region, offering a luxury experience in what I am calling - the heart of nature. That is not to say there aren’t other types of Homestay options in the region, however for that kind of experience you might like to check out the show S3-E2 My journey from Hanoi to Yen Bai (being the province) was a comfortable 4.5 to 5-hour drive, making it a convenient escape for Hanoians. From my personal experience, I’d suggest a stay of at least 2 nights, so you can enjoy the surrounding walks, hotel facilities and relaxation. Hylton highlighted nearby attractions like Mù Cang Chải,( 1.5hrs drive) famous for its terraced rice fields, and the unique cultural heritage of the Hmong, Thai, and Kinh people who inhabit the region. Well worth driving to for the amazing scenery around every corner. We also discussed the local food delicacies and accommodation options at Le Champ Resort, from glamping-style rooms to luxurious bungalows. The resort offers a blend of comfort and natural beauty, with natural hot springs, an exhilarating 1 km zip line, and an infinity pool with stunning mountain views. Hylton also mentioned a new property he manages in Mù Cang Chải called Garrya , set to open in August. This new destination will allow guests to explore both regions in one trip. My thanks to Le Champ Tu Le Resort Hot Spring & Spa for sponsoring this episode and the Garrya property which is luxury and wellness on whole new level! Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you Welcome back to What About Vietnam ! Get your ears ready for another insightful episode in our mini-series, Out & About in Vietnam where I check out what Nha Trang has to offer, in a 3 day stay. Nha Trang is not just another beautiful beach destination; it's a cultural melting pot. From the moment you step foot in Nha Trang, you're greeted by its buzzy, somewhat noisy atmosphere along the promenade. For the best stunning beach shoreline view, in the evening, I suggest heading to the Skylight roof top bar . An even better idea is to get up early and enjoy a mesmerising sunrise in the quietness of the day. A quick mention about the lovely Potique Hotel who sponsored this episode. A relatively new elegant city hotel, offering spacious well-designed rooms in that rich Indochine style with amazing beach views. Private access arranged at the beach and cafés, and restaurants right at your front door. We loved our stay. Go direct to the hotel LINK HERE for the best offers and mention this podcast. But there's more to Nha Trang than meets the eye. Beyond the beaches, I briefly touch on the variety of cuisines available to tantalise your taste buds. I forget to mention the amazing feast I had of lobster. So cheap and so delicious, you can find the restaurant HERE. For those adventure seekers, Nha Trang is a treasure trove of adrenaline-pumping activities. From exhilarating water sports, including top-notch diving, to the excitement of island hopping, which we tried as it included the mud baths experience!!! Let’s just say, – it's an experience unlike any other! Journey beyond the city centre to uncover it’s real gems; like the Po Nagar temple, offering insights into Vietnam's fascinating Cham history and Salt mining in the salt fields about an hour out of town. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you Here I am, "Out & About in Mui Ne," determined to share with you my findings as experienced through my eyes. It's a down-to-earth exploration of Mui Ne's hidden treasures and unique vibe. This is as authentic as it gets! Drawing inspiration from a previous episode S3- E17 I did with Nikki Cornish , I set out to explore this famous beachside location, known for its luxurious resorts like the Sailing Club Resort and its unique sand dune landscape. An Instagram favourite known to be very popular with travelling Russians, it is just a short three-hour drive away from the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City. Thanks to improved highways, reaching Mui Ne was a breeze. I cover other other transportation options like trains and buses on the show however I opted for a private driver due to the bulk of luggage I had in tow. Lets just say, we let the winds be our guide to an interesting stay. The must see tourist attractions covered are: The Sand Dunes The Fairy Stream The Lighthouse I hope the detail I provide helps you with your trip planning. My stay gets very personal to me, as we visit a close friend's family farm near Phan Thiet, providing a firsthand glimpse into Vietnam's agricultural heart. Having a local friend show us around made all the difference during our stay. This intimate connection not only enhanced our exploration of local seafood cuisine but also deepened our understanding of Vietnamese culture and the city's main population. Without my friend Linh’s guidance, I can candidly say we would have missed a lot. Her insights added layers of meaning to our experiences, turning an ordinary trip into a rich journey of discovery. She really made the trip for me and she took the role as guide for the 3 days we were there. Travel Tip:- Mui Ne is not as Westerner-friendly as other cities, with a strong Russian presence and limited English-speaking locals. I advise doing research or consulting with a Travel agent or Guide to make the most of your visit. Or get in touch with yours truly to plan your Vietnam holiday complete. 01:00 - Inspiration for Visiting Mui Ne 02:18 - First Impressions /Getting There 03:57 - The wind factor/ Accommodation Tips 05:44 - Tourist Attractions 12:34 - How long to stay 20:31 - Mui Ne's ideal tourist The best way to connect with me is not via text, it is through the website www.whataboutvietnam.com website and email. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you The “Out & About in Vietnam” series continues with Kelley McCarthy and I deciding to go in search of a beach escape from Saigon. Not many people know about this place, and with a new highway making it so much easier to access, it may just be the ticket! Today we're exploring a different kind of vacation experience—one where the hotel itself is the main destination. Our destination is Hồ Tràm, located about 125 kilometres from Saigon. Just a 2-hour shuttle bus trip away. Our home away from home for this trip is the stunning Melia Ho Tram Beach Resort. ( Please note this is an unpaid review) While Hồ Tràm is known for its golf course, namely The Bluffs Ho Tram , Kelley and I are here to indulge in the luxuries of a resort vacation. We're faced with the delightful dilemma of choosing between lounging by the infinity pool overlooking the beach, pampering ourselves with day spa treatments, or simply enjoying cocktails by the shore. Throughout the episode, we highlight the romantic ambiance of the resort, perfect for couples seeking a getaway or even a picturesque spot for a proposal. From intimate dining experiences to leisurely walks on the beach, the Melia Ho Tram offers a serene setting for quality time together. But we don't forget about families either. We discuss the amenities available for kids, including the kids' club, and how the resort's accessibility features make it suitable for all guests, including those with mobility impairments. One of the standout features we touch upon is the affordability of the resort, especially when opting for mid-week packages that include meals. By choosing a half-board package, guests can enjoy breakfast and dinner at the resort, making it a cost-effective yet luxurious experience. In essence, this episode showcases the beauty of a vacation where the focus is solely on relaxation and unwinding, without the need for additional excursions or activities. So, grab your favorite drink and join us as we escape to Ho Tram. [00:06:29] The importance of relaxation. [00:09:32] The best day spa experience. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you In our show today we get to explore the evolving food culture in Vietnam, with a focus on the growth of new culinary experiences and the expansion of dining options beyond just street food. Don’t get me wrong, Street Food is still something you must try, but don’t stop there! Stick around to find some of the up and coming places to eat in Vietnam. My wonderful guest, Jovel Chan a food writer and consultant, shares her insights on the influx of chefs from Vietnam and abroad, the rise of upscale establishments, and the overall refinement and enhancement of the dining scene in cities like Saigon and Hanoi. Listen to the end as as you will want to know about Jovel's favourites in those 2 cities. Many talented chefs have come to Vietnam, particularly in cities like Saigon and Hanoi, to set up their own restaurants and cater to both tourists and locals looking for something different. These chefs bring with them their expertise and creativity, introducing new flavors, techniques, and cuisines to the Vietnamese food scene. Additionally, the rise of five-star hotels and the opening of more malls in Vietnam have further diversified the dining scene. This has led to a wider variety of cuisines being available, catering to different tastes and preferences. It was pure joy to have this time with Jovel as we laughed and agreed on so many topics and shared experiences. I hope you can forgive the slight ‘cross talk’ in places, but I think if I didn’t leave that in, you would miss out on the connection we had, and wanted to share with you. Listen to the end as Jovel shares her favourites in Hanoi and Saigon. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you Bac Giang , is a picturesque place that often remains under the radar until the Lychee Festival, typically featured in social pages and news around June. This lively event commemorates Bac Giang's distinction as the "Land of Lychees." In today’s episode Bac Giang and the subject of lychees are front and centre, as I get to share the story of a photographer named Jessie Pearlman, a previous guest on the podcast, who embarked on a return trip to Vietnam, driven by his love for the country and his desire to reconnect with friends and explore new experiences. This show delves into the motivations behind his journey; the significance of the lychees to the region and the community, and how best to navigate a visit there. Jesse has a wonderful gift for self-expression and description which will immediately transport you to the experiences he had during his time in the heart of Bac Giang province, Luc Ngan, the township designated as the biggest growing township for lychees. He provides valuable tips on organizing your trip and strongly recommends it as a destination to visit, just a short 2.5-hour drive from Hanoi, especially for photographers and tropical fruit enthusiasts. This is an off the beaten track location and experience, so information is as Jesse describes, hard to find. Therefore, we have the following links to the people who helped him create his trip, which we hope will help you too. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you If you're planning a holiday in Vietnam and have a penchant for motorbike rides and scenic routes, your quest will inevitably lead you to the iconic Hải Vân Pass (Đèo Hải Vân). The Hải Vân Pass is more than just a road; it's a legendary motorbike route nestled in the heart of central Vietnam. In 2008, it garnered global recognition as the BBC and the Top Gear crew ventured through its winding trails, cementing its reputation as a must-visit destination for motorbike enthusiasts and adventure seekers. But what sets the Hải Vân Pass apart is not just its breathtaking landscapes. It holds a pivotal place in history as a crucial route during the Vietnam War, bridging the north and south of the country. Today, it stands as a symbol of Vietnam's resilience and progress. To uncover the hidden gems of the Hải Vân Pass, I had the privilege of speaking with Chris Moonie, a seasoned media professional, and traveller, with over eight years of living in Vietnam and multiple explorations of the Hải Vân Pass, Chris's first-hand experiences and deep understanding of the region make him an invaluable source of information for anyone contemplating a journey along this iconic route. Together we unpack all the ways to explore this route, and all the hidden gems along the way. Travelling by bike is not the only way to do this route. Chris's own odyssey in Vietnam began in 2013, when he ventured to Hoi An with his son. He was instantly captivated by the country, its people, and the irresistible charm of Hoi An. A chance encounter with a special lady during his visit further cemented his decision to relocate to Hoi An. Since then, he has been a resident of An Bang, a once-sleepy village that has transformed into a bustling tourist destination only 10 mins out of Hoi An. The Hải Vân Pass, no doubt, is a paradise for Instagram enthusiasts, but what sets it apart is the array of unique stops along the way. From oyster farms to the Dream Springs, this motorbike excursion offers more than just scenic beauty. But we will let you decide after listening. Don't forget to subscribe to our podcast, leave us a review, and share it with your fellow adventurers. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you In this podcast episode, I have the opportunity to introduce you to Vicki Thai, a Health Care Sales professional living in Utah, USA, with Vietnamese heritage. Vicki's family immigrated to the United States from Vietnam when she was four years old, and during her growing up, she had never given much thought to her Vietnamese background. However, a moment of vulnerability in her mother's health led her to realize the importance of experiencing her heritage. She decided to plan a trip to Vietnam with her mother and reached out to the "What About Vietnam" podcast for assistance. As I knew the background to the tour, I took great pleasure in planning this trip for Vicki and her mum, which included visits to Saigon, the Mekong Delta, and Dalat. These locations held special significance for Vicki and her mother, allowing them to explore their roots and connect with their heritage. Unexpectedly, the trip evoked strong emotions and a newfound appreciation for their Vietnamese identity. During their stay in Vietnam, Vicki and her mother engaged with the local people, immersed themselves in the country's culture, and marveled at the landscapes. This experience transformed Vicki's perception of her birthplace, instilling a deep sense of pride in her heritage. She also praises the warmth and thoughtfulness of the Vietnamese people, particularly their tour guides, and one in particular in Saigon, Ms Thuy. The episode highlights Vicki's journey through Saigon, the Mekong Delta, and Dalat, showcasing her awe and discovery of these places. I think for those who don’t live in their country of birth, you will relate to Vicki's story. Despite the trip going mostly smoothly, there was a minor glitch, illustrating that while many aspects can be controlled, some factors remain unpredictable. From the bustling vibrant city of Saigon, Vicki takes us by the hand as she describes her love of the bustling city of Saigon, to her awe and disbelief cruising through the Mekong Delta and then to discovering through the forests, the city of Dalat. A city she totally didn’t expect, while being her mothers’ birth city. At a deeper level this episode offers insight into the transformative power of heritage exploration and the deep connections it can foster. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you I’m thrilled to have such an engaging conversation with our guest today about the digital nomad lifestyle. Whether you're a seasoned nomad or just curious about this exciting way of life, this episode is a must-listen! I am fortunate to be joined with Florian Rucker who inspires nomads by providing a unique, friendly, and well fit out co working space in Hoi An called The Hub, to perform this kind of work. If you can imagine having high speed internet, in a glass workspace, in the middle of rice paddy fields, you have it right there! We get down to “tin tacks” as we talk through the evolving landscape of digital nomading and the transformation since Covid. No longer is it just for the youthful adventure seekers, employers are now funding some people to work this way, as they now recognise working remotely doesn’t have to impact output given the right set up. Hoi An and the The Hub provide workers a unique experience in Vietnam and now that the E-Visa stays are being extended to 90 days this looks like being a very viable option for more people. Flo is uniquely qualified to speak to this topic having lived abroad since he was 16. Originally a Berliner, he has a Cambridge education, and has lived in 7 other countries throughout his life. With a background in Development Aid and a IT Agency owner he fell in love with Hoi An after being a customer of the The Hub back in 2017. He bought the space in early 2021 and rebuilt it nearby, in the middle of the rice fields in ‘22/’23. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you Are you a drone enthusiast planning to visit Vietnam? Or do you have a general interest in drone photography. Either way you won't want to miss this episode where my guest Anton, a local drone enthusiast, shares his tips and experiences on drone use in the country. Along with some humorous tales of motor bike riding. Anton, known as ' Alright Anton' from his YouTube channel is able to share with us his insights and tips on how to simplify the process of using drones for non-commercial purposes. He shares very real circumstances that can impact your drone flying success in some locations; and you will laugh hysterically at the stories he shares containing birds, wind and avoiding mountains. The big tip: - Stick to avoiding 'no fly' zones and you won't have any problems. Anton, originally from Ukraine, has been traveling throughout Asia for the past five years, starting in Malaysia, where he taught English for three years. He developed an interest in blogging and photography during his travels and has since started a YouTube channel where he shares his experiences and drone footage. Anton believes that Vietnam has it all, from beaches to mountains, making it an ideal destination for drone photography. For the real amateurs like myself I share some of my own experiences with my DJI Mavic Pro 3, and how travelling with this camera can cause some challenges. However, with some forethought, and proper planning, these can easily be overcome. It's a fun show as in addition to Anton's droning experiences he shares his genuine love of places like Ninh Binh, Ha Giang, Sapa and while some of his travel stories are scary, his tales are very amusing. This is Part 3 of the mini series of Photography, which I hope you will keep for reference and share with other interested travellers. I think that's what we all want ....don't we! In this show Thomas expands on his photography tips:- How do we take photographs of some of the local people in Vietnam streets and regional locations? When taking pictures of people, Levine advises to look for expressions that show emotion, such as a person enjoying their food. He also suggests taking pictures of people in the background, so they don't know they are being photographed. When taking pictures in different locations, it is important to be aware of the local customs and rules. In some places, it is not acceptable to take pictures, while in others, it is encouraged. By understanding the local customs and rules, as well as looking for body language and expressions, photographers can create stunning images that tell a story. With the help of experienced photographers like Thomas Levine, we can all learn how to take stunning photographs that capture the true essence of a place like Vietnam. Learn how to bring the best memories home with you by capturing alluring pics of Vietnam like a real professional with either your smart phone or digital camera. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you In this episode of "What About Vietnam," I talk with adventurer and cinematographer Jack Taylor about the region of Sapa in north western Vietnam. Sapa is a scenic area known for its mountainous terrain and rice terraced fields. Jack shares his experience trekking and filming for his Youtube channel through the Hoang Lien Son Mountains and his interactions with the local hill tribes. As a result of this trip, Jack is able to provide useful information for travellers looking to explore the region and includes a link to Jack's YouTube channel for more visual content. Exploring the mountains of Sapa is an adventure like no other. Sapa is an overnight train ride or bus ride from Hanoi. It is the perfect place for those looking to get a glimpse of the mountainous regions, scenic rice terraced fields, and hill tribes of Vietnam. It's the place that opens you up to the ethnic minority tribes of Vietnam and of traditions still operating as they have done for hundreds of years. His commentary around their guide on the trip, called May , will endear you to the Dao people which many say are one of the many warm and welcoming ethnic groups in the region. Jack Taylor has traveled around the world, living in Spain, China, and Thailand before arriving in Vietnam and deciding to use his cinematic skills to create a more focused view of Vietnam. His aim has been to focus on the people, places, food, and culture of the places he visited, and his videos of Sapa capture the beauty of the region perfectly. You will know what I mean if you check his YouTube channel here which features his story of trekking for 3 days with the Dao tribe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4kPFsRVuAM Overall, Sapa is an amazing place to explore the culture and wildlife of Vietnam. With the right preparation, research and respect for the local hill tribes, you will enjoy your stay and be talking about it for years to come. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you If you thought Phong Nha, was just all about visiting the amazing caves you see and hear about, you would really be selling the area short. In this episode of "What about Vietnam?" we get to give you some background as to how the area managed to get through the Covid years. And we open up the agenda to talk about domestic tourism and diversification. Then of course we get to showcase many other cool fun things to do in the locality. My guest, is a bit of a legend in this area of Vietnam, and is none other than Ben Mitchell. Besides being an all round nice "Aussie bloke", he is extremely knowledgeable in local history and riding the Phong Nha loop as it is called. Ben has been on the program before and along with Howard Limbert in other episodes we have covered the caving aspect of Phong Nha in great detail, which undoubtably is its main attraction. However what you are about to find out in this show, is the caves, ....are just the entry point to other things to do in the region. Furthermore, the episode encourages visitors to consider extending their stay in Phong Nha since a few days might not be enough to experience all the activities available. Everything from bike riding, walking tours, cycling through villages, farm to table feasts, and surfing, to finally enjoying a G&T watching a beautiful sunset over the paddy fields. Ben has done a lot for tourism in the region, and is considered very knowledgeable on its history and many aspects of bike touring along the HCM trail. I feel sure from listening today you may like to consider bringing the whole family, as like Ben's young family, there is something for everyone. And everyone loves it! Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you In today’s show we explore Vietnam and the high hopes of a young traveller, singer and songwriter, who through his love of adventure and music found himself falling in love with Vietnam and its people. Our guest Luke Webster talks about his travels and how he found himself enjoying a more relaxed pace, with happy smiling people and welcoming feelings of family and home. He describes the sensory overload that hit him when he first arrived, and the beauty and serendipitous happenings that steered him to create the kind of music he had been wanting to make all his life. Luke has written and recorded an album of his original music in Hoi An, Vietnam. He studied English Literature at Uni, then went on to do 3 Camp America seasons and two Ski seasons in France. At the age of 23 he took a leap of faith and flew to Vietnam on a one-way ticket; met a musician from Israel and formed a band in Hoi An called The Langurs. Details of his Album soon to be released on Spotify will be provided below. He gigged continuously throughout the COVID years, also teaching English, guitar, piano, singing, Ukelele, and drums to expats in Hoi An. After exploring the north, Hanoi and Cat Ba, he describes falling in love all over again in Hoi An. The vibe of this old town (or country town as he calls it) including the beach area of An Bang began to open doors to allow him to perform regularly and craft his own style and repertoire of music to an ever increasing local following. Luke speaks to all of us who recognise the value of travel and especially to places where the culture is foreign to your own. He talks about how traveling and working things out as you go develops you as a person, and how it can broaden the mind to think outside the box. I am sure you will resonate with Luke’s openness and honesty. His experiences and tales of relationships with locals and learning about Vietnam are generous and heart warming. Make sure to look out for his album to be released in April 2023. Details to come shortly. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you Is Vietnam for the daring? The brave hearted. Or is it a country that you can feel confident about challenging yourself in, no matter what is daring for you! If Vietnam feels like a leap of faith to you, then this is the right show to tune into. In todays show we explore some of the things that contribute to making Vietnam a country you can feel safe in, and yet you can push your own personal boundaries. For some people visiting any country in the SEAsia region can feel like a deep dive into uncharted and circumspect waters. If you'd like to experience Vietnam with a sense of curiosity and confidence then my guest today is just the person to allay any of your fears, real or otherwise. Once a tourist to Vietnam from Barcelona Spain, now General Manager of the Fusion Original Saigon, my guest Alvaro Moreno does a wonderful job of identifying those often-unspoken gems that make travel so easy in Vietnam. As a lover of travel Alvaro shares some of the ways in which Vietnam can offer the traveller the chance to challenge themselves in relative safety, and on a range of budgets. He speaks about the high level of connectivity within the country digitally and how easy it is to travel about using various modes of transport, made easy to book on any mobile device through an App. You may be surprised to hear his favourite foodie experience. We talk about the fact chefs in Vietnam are being adventurous with their menus and restaurant experiences, particularly in Saigon and Hanoi. We touch on the growth of the country and its forward thinking that’s changing its appearance to the tourist and offering them more choices. A competitiveness that adds up to different levels of experiences in the country. Born and raised in Valencia, Spain, Alvaro spent the first two decades of his life growing up, working and traveling around Europe. Back in 2021, Alvaro took a six-month sabbatical from his job at the Barcelo Hotel Group in Spain to take a trip of a lifetime through Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, China, Nepal and India. During the journey he decided to move to South East Asia, in part so he could continue exploring the region. However, he chose Vietnam to be his second home. The WHY will become apparent during the interview. He has worked on the pre-opening phase of three hotels and one re-brand in Vietnam over the past 8 years, and he sits with great pride in his staff and hotel as GM of the The best way to connect with me is not via text, it is through the website www.whataboutvietnam.com website and email. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you Ninh Binh stands out in more ways than one if you set your compass to the north of Vietnam. Located 60 miles south of Hanoi lies this magical, almost mystical province featuring mountainous peaks and a labrynth of waterways inviting you to explore its many viewpoints. Sharp limestone peaks, shoot up from the ground reminiscent of what you might see doing the same thing out of water, in Halong bay. Which explains why they often refer to it as the Ha Long Bay on land. It is by all accounts Halong Bay’s mystical rival. My guest, Jack Taylor joins me on the show. His talents lie in the skilful way he has captured the essence of the region in his videos. Jack, an English teacher by profession has been travelling and living abroad for most of his adult life. Spain for 3 years, China for 4, and now Thailand for 4 years has meant Jack has had a front row seat to some of SE Asia’s treasures. Don’t forget to check out his You Tube channel “ I go cool places ”. As you will see in Jack’s video of Ninh Binh the outstanding beauty and serenity are breathtaking. Add to that a National park featuring a staggering amount of wildlife, and many pagodas including one of the biggest being the Bai Dinh Pagoda. You can easily get a sense of why some people think it has more to offer than Halong Bay. It is important to note that the Bai Dinh pagoda is considered a masterpiece of both nature and heritage, and it is the pride of Vietnamese people in terms of its quintessential architecture, culture and historical value. And, it’s NOT the major drawcard for the area. Jack does a great job in giving us some handy tips for staying in the region, what are the best times to visit and some of “The Must Do” things. I hope you enjoy the show and will surely investigate this region as a place of surreal beauty, almost lost in time, close to Hanoi. Check out his Video on his stay in Ninh Binh HERE. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you There are many reasons why Vietnam is a stand out favourite destination amongst female solo travellers. One of the dominant reasons is safety. The others reasons we explore more deeply in the show as they stem from the Vietnamese people themselves, and how they recognise women empowerment in their own culture. I hope my male guests will forgive us for making this show about the female solo traveller. You needn’t worry, I have a male solo traveller show on the drawing board so stay tuned. However, the aim of this show is to allay any fears a female may have about taking a solo trip to Vietnam. You are going to hear from both a westerner as in myself and a Vietnamese hospitality professional living in Saigon. My lovely guest is Camellia Dinh . With over 10 years of experience working in the hospitality industry for some of the world’s most prestigious hotel brands including Park Hyatt, Sofitel, and the M-Gallery Collection, Camellia has a wealth of experiences and local knowledge to share. Currently she holds the position as Director of Sales at Fusion Original Saigon Centre Camellia tells us it is not always convenient to travel with friends or family as matching up schedules with study and jobs makes it almost impossible. She says that she started travelling alone as teenager, and over time has come to really enjoy her trips alone, and it has afforded her some fun experiences. That’s not to say she doesn’t love travelling with friends and family when she can. Together we’d like to share our own personal experiences to ensure women considering doing this, can do so with confidence. Especially if the female traveller loves food, culture, scenery, shopping, pampering, wellness, adventure and making new friends along the way. The doors for a “female solo traveller” are about to open, and Vietnam is waiting to greet you with open arms. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you My guest describes this destination as ,“it's probably my favorite spot in Vietnam, and maybe ever, just due to its complexity and beauty”. If I could call this show the “reality Check-in to Con Dao” I would. As while it features some of the best beaches in Vietnam, it is not quite the same as what you would expect to find in Danang, Phu Quoc or Nha Trang. Its attraction is in its isolation. Its natural unspoiled beauty. It's serenity. In the show we take a deep dive into the Con Dao Islands with Conor Kelly. Conor shares with us a short break he took to the Islands and some of the things that took him by surprise. It’s great to welcome Conor back to the show. We have worked together before on his own Podcast called The Comeback, where I was the guest. He keeps himself very busy living in HCMC as he is also a teacher and journalist. It is testament to his journalistic skills that he is great at being descriptive, so you will get a really good feel for his travel experience. It’s fresh, honest and open without any hidden agenda or push one way or the other. While Conor has high praise for the islands, as we explored the activities during his stay more deeply we discovered some of islands dark history and limitations. We unpacked the “how to get there” travel experience, and how much time you should allow for a stay. If you are the luxury traveller, this place has your name on it. As it features a stunning Six Senses resort. For those seeking a restful quiet chilled-out stay, Con Dao should be your first choice. Ranked No. 1 Best Resort In Southeast Asia. Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards 2021 No matter what your budget, if you are starting to investigate beach side holidays in Vietnam, Con Dao will come up, and it is the perfect “get away” from it all. Reach out via email - I'd love to hear from you Contemporary art is shining fresh eyes on Vietnam. Why are we talking about contemporary art as part of a traveller’s experience of Vietnam? It’s because the art you are seeing today in Vietnam and in galleries all around the world, wasn’t always there. The artists coming through the last few decades are showing their skills, and they are painting their version of history. Some with a view to building bridges. It's modernistic, forward thinking and truly powerful with influences from some of our greats: Van Gogh, Matisse etc. In some small way I am hoping through the story telling of my guest today you will get some deeper understanding of some of the things you will be seeing and experiencing on your trip. If you are an Art Collector or art enthusiast there are links below to lead you to where you need to go. Today’s story begins in the early 90’s. Not that long ago if you think about it. But years before any reconciliation between the US and Vietnam. I am talking with the visionary of Contemporary Art in Vietnam – world renowned Suzanne Lecht Vietnam in the 90’s is a country rebuilding after being war torn for so long. You will be inspired by Suzanne as she tells about her initial involvement with the art scene in Vietnam after her husband died while they were living in Tokyo, and how she followed her dream two years later to seek out some artists in Vietnam, known as the Gang of 5. Ultimately, she goes on to make her dream come true to work with, and live with them, as she curated and exhibited their work to the outside world. Together with the Gang of 5 she builds her dream house. More on that in the show. While I had done the interview with Suzanne previously, I got to meet her during my recent trip to Vietnam. Meeting her in person and having time with her in her home, and in, what is in essence “The Salon or gallery” she built with the local artists. Suzanne is an inspiring woman who you can tell lives her life with passion and purpose. As two blondes, we laughed at the irony of our affinity with this country and its people. The Salon (Art Vietnam Gallery) is an intimate, creative reflection of the culture of Vietnam, open by appointment only. It can be booked for private parties, art consultations, poetry readings, music events as well as other cultural activities. Suzanne continues to curate exhibitions and shows in Vietnam and other cities worldwide to expose Vietnamese artists in the international art world. I suggest if you are a collector or interested in viewing some special pieces you would be ad The best way to connect with me is not via text, it is through the website www.whataboutvietnam.com website and email.
