Hi Moms! Raising an autistic child can feel like a roller coaster at times. Typical challenges occur when you try to help your child adjust to transitions or unexpected situations that come up. But they also occur when you encounter others who are clueless about autism.

That is never easy, especially when they are resistant to understanding your daily walk. It happens. And there will always be those people.

In this episode, I explore challenges with setting boundaries with others impeding on your autism journey and how to deal with the emotions that go with it.

Is It Possible for Autism Moms and Their Children to Survive Interactions with the World?

I was chatting with some fellow moms recently about what it is like to take our children out in public. The truth is that anything can happen.

Parents of neurotypicals can venture out into the world with their kids with limited cares in the world. Not so much for moms of autistics.

Lots of preparation goes into it. We prepare our children and ourselves. However, you cannot prepare for everything.

Sometimes things come out of left field. All this preparation can get exhausting.

So, is it possible for moms and their children to survive interactions with the world? Of course, but there will be hard encounters that feel like a punch in the gut and are super heavy.

I attended an event this week with my husband and son. There were bounce houses, so my son was super excited about it. He talked about it all day at ABA.

So, I prepared for every aspect of the visit down to safety, what to expect, and the rules. My son did beautifully.

A woman approached and was yelling at him. He was literally jumping alone in the corner. I asked her what the issue was and how I could help, but things just went sideways.

I was trying to figure out why this random woman was injecting herself where there was nothing wrong.

It got worse when I mentioned that he is on the spectrum. Honestly, the whole encounter was just bizarre.

She was so inappropriate and focused on degrading my child who was following all the rules and doing the right thing.

When she learned he was on the spectrum, she was incredibly mean and nasty. She said can’t he just go jump somewhere else and flung her hand like she was taking out the trash.

I had never encountered someone, who was just being mean for the sake of being mean as it related to my son.

How Can Moms of Autistics Effectively Deal with Encounters with Negative People?

I had to literally walk away from this woman. There was no rhyme or reason behind her nasty spirit or why she was behaving that way.

We are all different. We have different upbringings, experiences, and beliefs about the world.

I’ve talked a lot about dealing with negative people in the moment, but felt it was just as important to explore the aftermath.

So, I have a few tips to help with this.

My first tip is to acknowledge our differences and when to move on when someone isn’t willing to help or is resistant.

Like I said, I just walked away from her. She didn’t deserve anymore of my energy. Plus, it made no sense in continuing the conversation with someone like that.
