Janet Cowell: From finance to a life of public service, she embodies what it means to be a strong and compassionate leader
Manage episode 426495505 series 3562842
Growing up in Tennessee, thanks to her parents, Janet Cowell just knew she had a big life ahead of her. After getting an undergraduate degree and multiple graduate degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, including an MBA from Wharton, she followed the finance path. But examples in her family continued to pull her and her heartstrings in the direction of public service. Janet served as a Raleigh city councilor, a state senator, and as North Carolina’s State Treasurer. Now, she’s campaigning to be Raleigh’s next mayor. She is also the head of the Dix Park Conservancy-a nonprofit that is spearheading the development of a 300-plus acre green space in Raleigh to create a public park. Janet tells me the hardest part of being a female leader is being perceived as both competent and nice. I’m here to tell you that she is equally both. You will appreciate her thoughtful, insightful take on what it means to be a woman in politics in 2024.
