A recent survey conducted by Talker Research revealed that 38% of Americans have never felt more uninspired at work than they do now. That’s a bit over one-third of the workforce! In light of this dissatisfaction, what can be said about management? The post-pandemic workforce has a new view on what gives their lives meaning and the benefits of hybrid work, making it more challenging than ever for managers to keep their teams engaged and productive. To share how management can face this hybrid workforce era is our guest Mamie Kanfer Stewart. She’s the founder and CEO of Meeteor, a coaching and training company that focuses on creating healthy, high-performing teams with a special emphasis on productive meetings, as well as the author of “Momentum: Creating Effective, Engaging and Enjoyable Meetings.” Mamie also hosts the Modern Manager Podcast, where she delivers practical advice to help people tap into their managerial greatness. In this episode, Mamie shares how managers, despite being the unsung heroes of the workplace, fail to receive the support and skill development they need from their leadership so they can excel at their jobs. Mamie points out the essential skills managers need to thrive in today’s ever-popular hybrid work environments — from effective feedback and authentic appreciation for creating high-performance teams to leveraging AI tools for productivity and collaboration. We also talk about meetings, why employees hate them, and how management can use them for relationship-building rather than wasting people’s time. If your employees and management could use a boost, then this episode is a must-listen! Tune in for an approach to management that will shape the future of work. — Key Takeaways: Meet Mamie Kanfer Stewart & Her Take on Employee Engagement (00:00) Management’s Challenge to Inspire A Post-Pandemic Workforce (03:20) Critical Skills All Managers Should Have (12:38) Leveraging AI in Workforce Management (23:22) Why Meetings Are So Awful (30:17) Using Meetings for Relationship Building (46:54) What Do Managers Need to Feel Fulfilled & Valued? Anyone who has experimented with generative AI knows the tech is still flawed. Despite massive investments in AI models, tools, and applications, the fact that AI outputs are still biased and inconsistently accurate raises global concerns regarding trustworthiness and who is responsible for making AI safe as it evolves at earth-shattering speed. The unfortunate truth is that presently, the majority of AI models only reflect a narrow sample of our collective humanity, inevitably reinforcing the existing biases of those who programmed AI and the narrow data sets used, making today’s AI models inept at delivering diverse perspectives. Unpacking the ethics and path to a safer, more responsible, and representative AI future is Phaedra Boinodiris, IBM Consulting’s Global Leader for Trustworthy AI. Phaedra is a top voice, author, speaker, and one of the earliest leaders responsible for reimagining AI initiatives. Her recent book, “AI for the Rest of Us,” and her role as co-founder of the Future World Alliance highlight her commitment to integrating ethics into AI education and development. She’s here to discuss the need for inclusive AI that represents all of humanity, outlining the important considerations leaders should take into account to ensure their AI initiatives are ethical, inclusive, and able to effectively augment our capabilities without compromising human values. Further, what AI governance models look like at IBM and how to develop the right teams to develop truly groundbreaking AI solutions without compromise. We talk about how AI ethics intersects with broader societal issues, including education, corporations, and parental responsibilities. Phaedra also shares IBM's approaches to AI training, tools, teams, and transparency as well as the importance of AI literacy in different fields, and why diversity is crucial in AI development. Tune in to understand why we must approach AI with the intentionality it demands so it can work for humanity, and not against it. — Key Takeaways: Introducing Phaedra Boinodiris & Her Take On Ethical AI (00:00) IBM’s Ethical Governance Model For Training AI (12:58) AI Transparency & Accountability vs. The AI Arms Race (17:11) Is Decentralized AI The Way Forward? AI as a productivity tool is old news. The reality is that we’re just barely scratching the surface of what’s possible with generative AI. Today, we gain a different perspective on how AI can be leveraged as productive friction for enhancing human capacity. This isn't about making repetitive tasks easier; it's about making us better. In this episode, we explore the untapped potential of AI with Dr. Vivienne Ming, a renowned AI expert, neuroscientist, and visionary in leveraging AI to unlock the full spectrum of human capacity. As a self-proclaimed professional mad scientist, she’s the co-founder of Socos Labs and sits on the board and leadership teams at several other tech companies and organizations, including OptoCeutics and Dionysus Health. Dr. Ming has been at the forefront of using AI to unlock human potential and improve lives, challenging the conventional narratives surrounding artificial intelligence. We discuss how AI can serve as a powerful partner in augmenting human intelligence, pushing us toward deeper insights and solutions that we wouldn’t have reached on our own. From the workforce to education, Dr. Ming sheds light on how AI can boost our creativity, making us better learners, thinkers, and innovators. But it's not just about what AI can do for us individually; it's about how we can leverage it to create better teams and communities. By recognizing its limitations, we can get the most out of AI through productive friction, using it as a sparring partner of sorts to challenge our ideas, find areas of improvement, and see problems through a new lens. Curious about how AI can enhance your life and work, not just simplify it? Just because we live in the age of information doesn’t mean that we’re actually learning. As a society, we’re overwhelmed, and there’s a reason for it — the explosion of non-information. This candid episode reveals more about it. Today, we’re diving into the mind of Richard Saul Wurman, an American architect, designer, and visionary creator behind the TED Conference. He is a prolific thinker and content creator, having written, designed, and published 90 books, among a plethora of other accomplishments. Considered the father of information architecture, he shares his unique approach to understanding complex subjects and why he believes in embracing our “stupidity” as a way to innovate and remain curious and open to new ideas. Wurman also delivers a relevant criticism of the current state of education that relies on memorization and how AI is disrupting that. On the same note, he elaborates on the concepts behind his books “Information Anxiety” and “UnderstandingUnderstanding,” delivering a unique POV on how the currently overwhelming amount of non-information clouds our minds. Beyond AI, we also dig into how the TED conference was born and Wurman’s philosophy of work. These unconventional perspectives on innovation, learning, and communication offer listeners a fresh viewpoint on how to navigate the complexities of the modern world. Tune in for a dose of unconventional wisdom. — Key Takeaways: Introduction (00:00) Richard’s Take On Simplifying, Curiosity, and Embracing Ignorance (01:11) Discussing AI’s Impact on Information Anxiety (11:24) Facing Failure by Doing Good Work (16:40) Understanding, Understanding / Explaining, Explaining (22:02) Richard on His Experience With the TED Conference (27:58) Speed Round Questions (36:42) — ADDITIONAL RESOURCES Learn more about Richard Saul Wurman: https://www.wurman.com Subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/44ieyPB Follow our podcast: Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/44kONi6 Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3NtVK9W Join the TDW tribe and learn more: https://disruptedwork.com 🙏 - Alex & Nate [Free Download] The Future of Work Mindset: https://www.thedisruptedworkforce.com/mindset Connect with us: ✩ TDW Website - https://www.thedisruptedworkforce.com/ ✩ TDW Podcast - https://www.thedisruptedworkforce.com/podcast ✩ LinkedIn Alex - https://www.linkedin.com/in/iamalexschwartz/ ✩ LinkedIn Nate - https://www.linkedin.com/in/healthydisruptor/ ✩ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/disruptedwork/ ✩ Support the Podcast - coming soon! — ABOUT THE DISRUPTED WORKFORCE: The Disrupted Workforce is a podcast focusing on the intersection of human experience, AI, and the Future of Work.
