Steve Wilson – Teetering on a Tight Tope: My Bi-Polar Journey
Manage episode 394744425 series 2815404
Steve Wilson chronicles a portion of his life beginning at nine. He helped an unsuspecting person while in a movie theater who raped him. Steve immediately dismissed what happened, not knowing if he may have caused the incident. Through many years of his life, having suppressed the incident, he was diagnosed as being type 2 bipolar. For most of his 74 years of life, he has had bipolar disorder. Descending into the depths of suicidal intentions or rising to the high of watching the births of his children, he has endured a roller-coaster life of epic proportions. His memoir, Teetering on a Tightrope: My Bipolar Journey, takes the reader on a chronological journey of emotions recounting his rape, his desire to take his life, and his attempt to kill his father. His book recounts his voyage through therapy and his successes and failures using prescribed psychological medications while highlighting his recovery. Starting in 2016, Steve facilitated two mental health support groups in Phoenix, Arizona. Through his experiences and those of the numerous people with whom he has worked, he considers himself to be knowledgeable on real-life bipolar disorder. His memoir is deeply personal while being a call to action for the reader to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health to be a catalyst to find the support a person needs to resurrect their life.
