Part poorly trained physician who didn't believe in anesthesia, part racist misogynist who appears to have simply enjoyed torturing enslaved Black women during the 1800s, Sims is not somebody who deserves all the honor and admiration that history has afforded him. Learn about the barbaric practices he employed to "treat" women suffering from debilitating and painful conditions and why we might want to stop awarding Terrible People even if their Terrible deeds accomplished some breakthrough in science or medicine.
