From the outside looking in, Chef Joseph Lenn and I may not have much in common. He’s a renowned chef who owns one of the most popular restaurants in Knoxville, and I’m a plastic surgeon. But at the end of the day, we’re both business owners and in this episode, I dig into how Chef Lenn got his start as an entrepreneur. We discuss the importance of fostering collaboration and creativity within our teams, and Chef Lenn also reveals how he deals with negative feedback and learns from it, as well as his attitude to overcoming setbacks which has allowed him to retain top talent.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Chef Joseph Lenn is introduced and we talk about his background as a chef in Knoxville (00:15)
  • How Chef Lenn decided to go from a high-profile job into business for himself (02:16)
  • Creative control and work-life balance as the driving force for change when going into business for oneself (4:54)
  • The collaboration that Chef Lenn fosters at J.C. Holdway and what inspired him to foster creativity in his employees (08:48)
  • Why Chef Lenn feels interaction is the key to successful brainstorming in creative endeavors (12:42)
  • How Chef Lenn deals with negative feedback (18:30)
  • Chef Lenn’s approach to maintaining high standards throughout set-backs and challenges (29:21)
  • How the opening of J.C. Holdway was almost a failure and what Chef Lenn learned through that experience (35:25)
  • The best attitude to overcoming adversity and why the biggest challenge facing business owners today is rising costs (41:04)
