The Palestinians are trapped. Not just by a powerful, US-backed military, but by international institutions and an international legal framework that stacks the deck in favor of supposedly moral state armies, and against the weaker peoples that are occupied and oppressed by them.

That's the argument of Abdelghany Sayed, a legal scholar who has worked with the International Criminal Court and has studied the concept of "human shields," and how that concept has been used to justify state violence in Palestine, Iraq, and throughout the Global South.

Abdelghany Sayed is a PhD student at the University of Kent. In addition to the ICC, he's worked as a legal analyst at the Public International Law and Policy Group (Washington DC), and has consulted for UNICEF (Cairo), the OECD (Paris), and International Law and Policy Institute (Oslo) on issues of international law.
