In a context of deep questioning of the post-colonial State in Africa, Nigerian scholar Peter Ekeh publishes in 1975 a seminal piece on the matter: "Colonialism and the Two Publics in Africa: A Theoritical Statement". Rather unknown outside of the African continent by the general public abroad at the time but also up until now, his paper argues that crises in modern African states must be analysed through the societal effects colonialism has had. In it, he exposes what he considers as 'two kinds of publics': the primordial public and the civic public. One individual can be part of the two, must find a balance between them and the confusion between both has fueled modern internal conflicts.
