Episode 2: The History of Hyperautomation

Date: 1 May 2022

Hosted by: Jimmy Hewitt, Sr. Automation Advisor sponsored by Salient Process

During this episode of Bots & Thoughts: The Hyperautomation Podcast, you will learn about the history of the seven distinct hyperautomation capabilities. Specifically, you will hear how process mapping, Process Mining, Task Automation, Capture, Workflow, Content, and Decision Automation capabilities originated. From parenting 12 children to defining Process Mapping, saving man-hours on Wall Street to the start of Robotic Process Automation, scanning a simple picture of your child to the creation of Optical Character Recognition, and much more, each automation capability has its own story of how it came to be. Not only will you get a glimpse into the history of the hyperautomation capabilities, but you will also listen to a bonus section that travels back to the very beginning of hyperautomation, nearly 2 million years ago. Please join our host, Jimmy Hewitt, to dive into the exciting history of hyperautomation!

“The origin story of process mapping goes back to the same year that Babe Ruth eclipsed the career home run record. That’s right. In 1921, a mechanical engineer, the father of process mapping, one of my heroes, and the father from [the original] Cheaper by the Dozen (yes, the movie), Frank Gilbreth and his wife, who’s also a mechanical engineer, made a seminal presentation to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers called Process Charts: First Steps in Finding the One Best Way.

“Process mining can be described as the missing link between process mapping and data science.”

“I was amazed at how many concepts still hold true today.”

“How interesting is it that history not only repeats itself, but the intent of this technology still stays the same after over 30 years?”

“Learning about and talking you all through the history and humble beginnings of hyperautomation has also really made me appreciate how far we have come and how much easier it is, relatively speaking, to get from idea to actual business value.”
