On today’s Bible Answer Man broadcast, Hank talks about Jonathan Cahn, author of The Harbinger, The Mystery of the Shemitah, The Paradigm, and now The Harbinger II: The Return, who claims that there is a mystery to be revealed in our time through his prophetic powers—a mystery behind major world events, particularly those affecting America. Cahn alone has figured out their mystery and pattern—His claim is that such events constitute or portend modern divine judgments, just as calamitous events in ancient Israel’s history were divine judgments for sin. The first thing we ought to note when reading these kinds of claims is that Cahn is a master of the selling of fear. It’s a financial bonanza for anyone who does it well. Think back to Y2K—Under Y2K selling fear was hugely profitable for megachurch pastors—but bankrupted many parishioners. The real tragedy is not that men like Jonathan Cahn are using current events as the pretext for selling fear, the real tragedy is that their messages and manuscripts are now being promoted by mainstream ministers and ministries. We need to commit ourselves to developing the necessary skills to discern wheat from chaff and heat from light. If we do, the next time we face the selling and subjectivism of Christian sensationalists, Christians will be unified around truth rather than divided by error.
