And it is encouraging because humans are incredibly innovative continuously. What matters now is ensuring that we do not degrade nature at the alter of social-economic transformation. As much as is possible, we ought to keep nature in balance so that ecosystems that sustain us remain fully functional. One of the best ways for restoring nature and bringing it closer to our homes, farms, and habitats generally is through planting of trees, fruit trees, and wild hedges. This episode is recorded in a farm setting where nature has been preserved for diversity to thrive. And the most visible sign of such restorative activities is the presence of trees and woodlots. Send us a text A visit to the private Mugongai Forest Sanctuary was quite a refreshing audio therapy treat. The little forest is mature and pristine despite its close proximity to an urban environment in Meru County, Kenya. The forest is close to a highway but ambient traffic sounds did not seem to deter the birds from giving out their best in a melodious outpouring. It is like the day was just made for them, and I sat down to immerse in the peaceful atmosphere. Truly, it is possible to synchronize our human nature with those of wild nature. Going green with our motor transportation will undoubtedly boost our chances of living in harmony with nature. The least we can do is make the cars and motor cycles less noisy. Send us a text Sitting by a river bank on a hot afternoon can be sensationally relaxing. I sat by the Ngong river last week of January, and the show was incredible. Birds can be quite chatty. Although our untrained minds may not decipher the audio camaraderie, birds actually engage in lengthy conversations. They embellish the goings on with song and dance. The sound of water running gently over the rocky riverine woodlot added to the medley of pleasant melodies. The bird species arriving for this afternoon roost session increased gradually to have a fully complemented outdoor orchestra. The winds blew gently and the tree branches and falling leaves rustled. The sounds uplifted my spirit. I trust that you too will find these sounds relaxing enough to unleash your creative juices. Morning & Afternoon Nature Sounds 4:48

Send us a text The recording starts in mid-morning on a nature trail 30 kilometers out of Nairobi City County. I stopped briefly at several spots along the trail to pick new sounds. Morning bird songs are distinct from the afternoon and evening songs, even if they are the same birds. The variations depend how the day has turned out for each bird species. For some it is the weather, others it is the food, for others it is noise pollution, and to others it is the peace of the day and so forth. But mostly, it is song, grooming, scrouging for food and general camaraderie. Animals and human beings also respond to the complex magnitude of these compositions. Some will fall asleep or just blank out in an unwind latitude. For some, it is only then does peace like a river flow. It is then that the spirits are uplifted, and creativity unlocked from the deep recesses of our subconscious minds. They are healing sounds. The recording ends in a farm and specifically adjacent to a poultry compound. Different birds came and perched on some trees next to where I had taken shelter. Some birds stayed briefly and left. But one bird tarried a little bit, and the richness of that one bird's composition lulled even the chicken to a slumber, myself not withstanding. And so my day was made. Enjoy the show JonMak…

Send us a text This episode is recorded along a seasonal river bed that runs along the OloSirikon valley when it rains. The seasonal river has receded after the short January rains. It is now a stream flowing before it eventually dries up under the intense February sun. The vegetation has sprung up and the greenery is exhilarating. The air is fresh in the countryside. The Kajiado County grazing lands teem with healthy livestock, and the migratory corridors are alive with wildlife. The most cheerful are the birds though. They brought their song to the riverine woodlot, and I sat down to record these mid-morning melodies. The soft mid-day bird choruses induced an ambiance of serenity to massage a sense of wellness. The acacia tree branches swayed in the wind in sync with the gentle sound of water running over stones. This stream joins Mbagathi river a few clicks downstream before entering Athi River; all the way to the Indian Ocean. As I took this break in nature, I knew I was breathing fresh air, embellished with doses of beautiful nature sounds. Enjoy the show.…

Send us a text It is late afternoon when this clip is recorded. The clouds are thick and hang low and dark. The birds arrive back early to their night roosts. They perch and generally hang around in their hood and sing merry tones to herald the new rain season. Then it started with lightening flashes across the sky and followed by heavy thunderstorms. The skies sounded busy with new sounds that muted the bird songs in the ecosystem. Thunder claps exploded and echoed in a wave of cascades across the skies into the far horizon. Showers of rain fell into the ground in gentle waves to quench the cracked and thirsty earth. Rains are always welcome in Africa where seasons have been disrupted by the onset of climate change. And it is no longer certain when one season begins and the other ends. But it came this day and that counted for a regenerative season. A time of plenty for all creatures great and small. Send us a text These are easy listening sounds of nature. The recording starts at 6.30 am for this episode. The new day breaks with songs of joy from birds. A day full of expectations and opportunities. Most birds are at various stages of waking up. The sun is incrementally rising from the eastern skies, and a golden glow creates a mosaic of patterns on the savannah plains. The sun rays penetrating through the morning clouds create an array of glitter through the tree canopies. Dew is still fresh on the grass and vegetation. I always choose a new location to record nature sounds for each episode. I would then spend the day on the trail, and picking different spots in the same location to capture different sounds. I can hear the too too to to to .... of the rain bird in the distance. It is always a signal that the rain season is close. The finches, doves, herons, sterlings, dringos, weaver birds and a multitude of other feathered species welcome a new day in style. By 7 am, many birds are out of their night roosts. They make sorties in various directions in search of breakfast. But they sing a lot in the process. While some are hunting on the ground and around bushes, others are perched on branches to keep watch for any danger. By this time, you are probably on your way to work or in a traffic jam. Just talking to each other as they groom. Its like the day was just made for them. Some just perch on branches and sing or fly by from one tree to the next to gain vantage points to participate well in the melody making. Flies on the other hand seem to have fun buzzing the recorder mic so as not to be left out in the music making by their louder counterparts They look happy like they have had a successful morning doing whatever it is they rise early to accomplish.…

Send us a text In my quest to get nature sounds from pristine nature locations, I have found that there are not many places left that could be described as purely pristine. The hand of humanity has already touched almost everywhere. There are still a few places left that one could experience nature with minimal or subdued human sounds in the distance. Kenya's national parks and reserves could very well be described as pristine. However, there are cost implications for regular visits to film and record nature sounds. Conversely, there is absolutely nothing wrong with human made sounds as long as they are regulated to avoid noise pollution. Human made sounds should blend and be part of our natural world. Lion Loses Kill to Hyenas 3:05

Send us a text It was on Christmas day. We watched a male lion track down a herd of three male impalas from late afternoon. The location is at the Nairobi National Park southern border. We watched from the safety of a secure terrace. And a hyena scout is never too far away from a lion on a hunting prowl. If the lion makes a kill, then he would howl loudly to report to his mates. As evening set in and darkness enveloped the valley, the lion managed to corner one of the bucks and made a kill. The scene was hidden by a thick acacia woodlot and no one would dare venture close to a lion with prey. No sooner had the male lion put the impala down and the hyena was louder than several vuvuzelas that echoed across the valley. Unfortunately for the lion, he was on hyena territory where they call home and patrol. A multitude of them were on the scene almost instantly. The lion put on a brave fight but he was surrounded, and overwhelmed by a mob of howling hyenas. No idea how much of the bloody banquet he was able to enjoy. The hyenas were left to feast and squabble over King of the jungle's hard won meal on Christmas Day.…

Send us a text Oloosirikon is located in Kajiado County in Kenya, adjacent to the Nairobi National Park southern border. Migrating birds take time to roost in the savannah grassland valleys before continuing with their journeys. For the time they are in the vicinity, they provide an incredible acoustic boost to the local birds that inhabit the woodlots. There are plenty of pristine wilderness patches left in Kajiado despite the encroaching Nairobi County urban sprawl. Send us a text Agroforestry is one of the smartest solutions to climate change mitigation. The farmer benefits and biodiversity thrives, harmful carbon is sequestered and soil erosion is controlled. In a healthy farm such as this where this recording has been done, birds find a beautiful and bountiful place to call home with all the trees, shrubbery and crops growing in the farm. Their daily response is songs of joy and peace. Healing melodies from the heart and soul of some of nature's most beautiful creatures. And they never tire of it from sunrise to sunset.
