Hello Poison Friends! We have discussed quite a few heavy metals, but not all of them. While we did mention Antimony awhile back, we did not give it the attention it deserves, so this would be a great time to do so. Before getting too deep into Antimony, however, a review on purging with emetics and the history there concerning the "rebalancing of humors" as well as the more modern "ridding oneself of toxins," is in order. One emetic that is more recent in our history is Ipecac. Technically, or medicinally, it went by the name Syrup of Ipecac. Parents, here in America at least, were told by the American Association of Pediatricians to keep a bottle in their homes at all times in case of children accidentally poisoning themselves. What we have learned since the late 1990s however is that not only is Ipecac not really effective at treating poisoning cases, but it is also toxic and can lead to its own complications including irritation of the GI tract and airways, seizures, and heart problems. There are now more efficient and safe ways to treat cases of poisoning that do not involve forced vomiting. Throughout history, people have leaned on various toxic substances to cause themselves to vomit or that would induce diarrhea as a way of healing or keeping oneself healthy. It doesn't sound pleasant but what they used made it even less so. Antimony does cause GI distress including vomiting and diarrhea and can also lead to muscle weakness, gastric ulcers, seizures, kidney disease, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disease, respiratory distress, and blistering of the skin if topically applied. It has also been found to be carcinogenic. Acute use at high dosages, or chronic use at any dose, could lead to poisoning and death. People used Antimony medicinally (as Tartar emetic, namely) for a number of different ailments including epilepsy, syphilis, tuberculosis, and GI distress of all sorts. It was even used for alcoholism, and in some countries, it still is. In centuries past, they even had accessories to go along with their toxic medicine. So let's go through the history of these substances and you know some interesting and familiar names will pop up along the way including a Biblical character/Babylonian king, Isaac Newton, a King of France, and a founding father with a penchant for excessive bleeding and purging. Streptococcus: All The Ways It Can Mess You Up. 1:22:22

Hey Poison Friends!! I hope we are all staying well so far this (almost) Fall season. I know, the Autumnal Equinox won't be here until next month, but I am excited for Fall and spooky season and cooler weather. The one thing I do not like this time of year is the amount of viral and bacterial infections that seem to wage war on us all. One such bacterial agent is Streptococcus pyogenes or what you may hear called Group A Strep. This is the nasty that causes impetigo and strep throat (streptococcus pharyngitis) which can then lead to scarlet fever and rheumatic fever which can also lead to numerous complications like rheumatic heart disease and long term kidney dysfunction. All of that from strep throat or impetigo?? Yes, but fortunately we do not see these other complications as often thanks to antibiotics and preventative measures such as hand hygiene, isolation when contagious, and sanitation measures. It is still prevalent enough to cause a few thousand deaths here in America every year, however, and many more in countries who do not have good access to medical care and antibiotics. We are also discussing Invasive Group A Strep, because a strep infection can also lead to sepsis involving necrotizing fasciitis and toxic shock syndrome. Both of these complications are life threatening. We need to cover the demise of one of my all time favorite creators in this episode as well, Jim Henson. He died of TSS resulting from an untreated strep infection and, as sad as this was, his story needs to be told so that others don't. I won't spoil this episode any further, but I want to include the last message he had written to be given to his five children after his death. “First of all, don’t feel bad that I’m gone. The Wellness Industry: Essential Oils and Wellness MLM's 1:58:25

Hello Poison Friends! We are going over more wellness products and practices that have been used and promoted as cures for various illnesses, from colds to cancer and autoimmune diseases. In this final episode on the Wellness Industry’s toxic side, we need to discuss some multi level marketing (MLM) businesses/groups that not only push such products, but also pull the vulnerable into financially difficult and sometimes fraudulent schemes. Two of these groups we are discussing (Young Living and doTERRA) deal with essential oils, so we are also discussing what essential oils are and what they are not. I want to take a look at the science behind these oils and see how the claims hold up under study and the facts. We also need to take a look into the spiritual side of essential oils and the MLMs selling them, because the backstory for both of these businesses is…a lot. We are going into Gary Young and his many run-ins with the law before and during the creation of Young Living as well as his many eccentricities, strange claims, and misdeeds along the way. We are also touching on how doTERRA came about because it is connected to Young Living and both have become million dollar companies. There is a lot to discuss, even at the surface level, with this subject. We’ll go over a selection of popular oils and the claims behind them (such as being cures for COVID, cancer, autism, and ebola…among other illnesses), but there are far too many oils to cover them all. These companies have also encouraged the ingestion of essential oils, which can be dangerous as many are toxic and some may contain contaminants. The FTC and FDA has been all over both of these businesses because of their wild health claims with nothing to back them up. Another MLM we will briefly touch on is Herbal Life because there are more than essential oils MLMs when it comes to Wellness, of course. Herbal Life promotes nutrition and weight loss products that have caused a stir for possible being linked to liver toxicity as well as lead being discovered in some products. There are so many other MLMs dealing in similar products, so I am not specifically picking on these three. None of this is for bullying purposes and I am simply pulling from sources that can easily be found online on respected sites. The Wellness Industry: Scamming Influencers, Goop, and Feel Free. 1:55:27

Hello Poison Friends! We have been covering this topic of “wellness” and the industry surrounding the term. We all want to be well, and obviously, there are some great practices out there to help us out with that, but there are also a lot of scams and misinformation out there as well. This week we are covering the story of Belle Gibson, a wellness influencer who told her followers that she had brain cancer and only had six months to live, but beat the odds using natural means and by changing her diet and lifestyle. Specifically, she promoted recipes that she would later sell in her app and cookbook (supported by Apple and Penguin Books). Belle, however, never had cancer, and while she had promised that the proceeds of her app sells would go towards various charities, she lied about that as well. She influenced many of those who did actually have cancer or chronic illness to stop conventional medicine practices such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, medications, etc. She continued her lies for years, selling her brand and giving inconsistent medical reports along the way. It all came crumbling down with a couple of investigative journalists who received a tip that Belle might not be so sick after all. We also have to talk about Goop. Gwenyth Paltrow’s brand has always been pretty controversial for most of us, but she has made a lot of money and gained a following with it. As such, we need to discuss such products and practices promoted and provided by Goop as jade eggs, amethyst bottles, and expensive stickers or yoga mats that are supposed to help a variety of issues you may deal with. She has been in legal trouble for some of her claims, but you can still find a lot of these products on her website. Just a heads up: We may mention some products with descriptions not suitable for children to hear about while discussing Goop. Nothing descriptive, mind you, or graphic, just correct anatomical terminology. A final topic for discussion this week is that of the concerning beverage being sold at convenience stores or markets called Feel Free. This product, created and sold by Botanic Tonics, has led to a lot of concern with parents and doctors, because of what is in it. One ingredient we will discuss is Kava root extract, which is not necessarily toxic in low amounts (though extracts may have some hepatotoxic effects). It is another ingredient that has been causing problems: Kratom. This ingredient is known to produce opioid-like effects (and has been considered an opioid by the FDA since 2018) and is both physiologically and psychologically addictive, causing a lot of destruction in the lives of consumers, especially those who have suffered addiction before. I am back to bring you more toxins that are often causes of accidental poisoning. These include opioid medications, specifically the synthetic opioid fentanyl and the differences between clinical fentanyl and street/illegal versions. I also want to discuss the effects of pain meds and benzodiazepines on the body as well as the effects of mixing drugs with dangerous interactions. I had a specific celebrity's death in mind when describing such. Also, I wanted to discuss the old Tide Pod craze. If you remember, there was this social media challenge where young people were ingesting laundry detergent pods (specifically Tide Pods) and we need to talk about that as well as the dangers of leaving these out for children or those with cognitive issues to find and accidentally ingest. I am also including a whole collection of toys, accessories, or knickknacks that have proven dangerous or even deadly when found and ingested by children as well. Tiny magnets, button batteries, Aqua Dots, Orbeez, and toys from the 1950s that have lead to serious harm over the years. I have been looking forward to sharing the horrors of Marburg and Ebola viruses with you, but there is a lot of info so we are discussing Marburg first then Ebola next week. Just a trigger warning: Some of the descriptions of this virus and what it does to the body may be gruesome. Marburg is relatively new as a virus among humans (compared to others like smallpox or rabies), but it is a monster. It is believed to have originated in Uganda in Africa, perhaps originally transmitted via fruit bats. The world came to know about it, however, during a 1967 outbreak in Germany, brought there by infected monkeys being used at a vaccine company there. It typically starts with a throbbing headache and muscle pains, then soon causes massive clotting then hemorrhaging throughout the body. Obviously the symptoms of such are horrid, and death typically occurs within a few weeks. With an average death rate at 25% (higher in some outbreaks), it has been devastating when outbreaks occur. We are late with this one, due to a few tech problems, but we have persevered! Lets get mysterious for a bit...I have been thinking about the Dyatlov Pass Incident and other similar tragedies in which we have very few answers but a whole lot of theories, some more feasible than others. The Dyatlov Pass Incident involved a team of young and experienced ski-hikers who never returned from a hike in the Ural Mountains of the Soviet Union (now Russia, of course) back in 1959. Their tent was damaged and the team was found in separate places and wearing little to nothing in the freezing snow. Some were found with fatal wounds but most without such obvious injuries. So what happened? The Khamar-Daban Incident has been likened to that of Dyatlov Pass, because of the mysteries surrounding it. This incident also occurred in Russia, near Lake Baikal, in 1993. One survivor made it down the mountain her team was hiking with their teacher and told a harrowing tale of how they did not make it. What happened to them and how much of her story is accurate? We need to discuss Cosmetic/Plastic Surgery, because I have been bothered by the amount of stories out there concerning scammers and frauds doing great harm to those looking for these procedures. First let's discuss the history behind this branch of medicine, because we all love some history (I hope lol). Then we need to talk about the procedure with the highest mortality rate currently: The BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift). This one has been quite popular due to the influence of certain celebrities and influencers out there promoting recent beauty standards (another topic of discussion here). As for this episode, I wanted to bring up a couple of historic cases in which notable figures died and while the cause of death was listed as illness or natural causes, there has long been suspicion among some that they were actually poisoned. First, we discuss Napoleon Bonaparte I, the French military leader and short-term emperor. He had his victories, his defeats, and his exiles, his last being where he died reportedly from stomach cancer/severe stomach ulceration and hemorrhaging. More than a century later, hairs from Napoleon that had been preserved were tested for arsenic and came back as positive for the heavy metal, leading some to believe he was actually poisoned. In the late 1800s, another notable figure, this time an arctic explorer by the name of Charles Francis Hall, died while leading an expedition to the North Pole. He came down with a sudden illness after having his usual coffee and immediately suspected some of his crew of poisoning him. He seemed to be getting better until struck with further illness and dying soon after. He was buried in Greenland and the rest of the crew never did make it to the North Pole. Later they were questioned about Halls death, but since the body was not present and all they had were the words of the crew, it was judged he had died of natural causes. Similar to Bonaparte’s case, some years later, a biographer seeking answers, found a way to get to his body and have his hair, nails, and bones tested. What he found raised suspicion immediately and many now believe (if they already did not before) that Hall was poisoned, but by who? And was Hall the only victim? I thought we could use an episode free from prions and other deadly viruses and diseases, so let's talk about some medications that turned out to be toxic. We have discussed how some toxins became useful in the world of medicine, so why not the other way around? While discussing this topic, I thought it would be informative to include some basics on what clinical trials look like (at least here in America). I have had many requests for one drug in particular: Thalidomide. We did briefly discuss this one in a bonus episode, but I dug a little deeper and wanted to include how it affected food and drug acts in the countries it affected. While not approved in America during its time, samples were given out and there were quite a few still affected here. This particular drug led to some horrific birth defects as well as many of miscarriages and stillbirths. Other medications we need to discuss include a couple of NSAIDs (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) called Vioxx and Bextra. These caused higher risks of heart attack and stroke, injuring and killing many who had taken them. Bextra was also linked to a higher risk for Stevens-Johnsons Syndrome, a serious skin condition that was painful and could lead to further complications. Lastly, if you grew up in the 90s like we did, you'll remember the influx of amphetamine or caffeine based weight loss drugs. Some were prescribed but some were also over the counter. You could buy some "supplements" like these at any convenient store. One medication prescribed to patients was a combination drug, called Fen-Phen by many, and it caused pulmonary hypertension, proving fatal to some who took it and leaving others with longterm heart valve and respiratory problems. We are back with part two of Prion Diseases or Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies. Kuru is a TSE/Prion disease that has affected the native people's of Papua New Guinea during the last century or so. I don't want to spoil just how it came about, but it does involve some taboo--and thankfully no longer practiced--funerary rites. The Australians who were observing and studying them just after WWI discovered the Fore people there were dying out quickly (the women and children especially) of some strange illness that led them to shake and tremble violently, become confused, and even laugh deliriously before dying. There native peoples had long believed it to come from sorcery, but the Australians and an American physician with many a flaw to discuss here were not content with such an answer. Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) was identified in patients in the early 20th century and the symptoms were similar to other diseases now known to be prion diseases: dementia, hallucinations, stumbling, falling, loss of coordination, death. This seemed to be spontaneous and that was that. Then Europe's cattle began to show signs and symptoms that were alarming. They too loss their coordination, became agitated, held their heads strangely, fell over, and died. Cows who were ill were slaughtered and their meat and tissues made it into the food chain. In Cows, the illness was identified as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), though some journalists referred to it as "mad cow" disease. While the government agencies tried to keep it a secret to avoid the meat economy from going under, humans became infected via the ingestion of BSE infected meat. This illness in humans was identified as variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease and it caused chaos and panic among those who had been buying and eating beef. America would face a similar battle with similar government agency actions and there are some (scientists included) who have begun to believe that CJD is never sporadic but likely always related in some way to infected meat. Let's see why they think as much. Finally, we need to discuss what is happening to deer, especially here in North America. Chronic Wasting Disease showed up in Colorado in deer in the late 1900s (1970 onward) and it has since spread to elk, moose, reindeer and other such animals throughout the US and Canada. These animals are dying of a prion disease that likely jumped from sheep as Scrapie into deer as CWD. How could this have happened and what could it mean for the future? Welcome to our talk on prions and prion diseases. I feel I cannot do this topic justice by just telling you about the terrifying and thankfully rare diseases caused by infectious proteins. So we are going to talk about what a prion is, how humans discovered them, and how scientists and medical professionals identified what they were (relatively recently in fact). This episode specifically deals with Scrapie, a prion disease found in sheep and Familial Fatal Insomnia, a hereditary disease found in humans (though, it may be sporadic in even rarer cases). I know we have covered some toxic ghost towns before but there are just too many out there not to bring the subject back up! If you haven't seen the last Toxic Ghost Towns episode, definitely check it out! This time around I chose to discuss a place close to home in South Carolina. "Becca, I though y'all lived in Georgia!" We do, but right next to the Savannah river which connects us to South Carolina. So this is close to us as well. There was once a town called Ellenton, until the 1950s when the government decided it was the perfect place for a new nuclear site. The Savannah River Site was first created to produce materials for nuclear weapons and during its planning, the entire town of Ellenton as well as other nearby communities were forced out with a bit of compensation for their property as determined by the government. New Ellenton was created, where some of the residents would resettle, but they would never forget their old town and how it was basically taken from them, Ellenton has its own dirty history, steeped in racist politics and violence, however, and I could not help but dig into that before discussing the toxic materials left behind when SRS switched roles from nuclear weapons products to research and environmental concerns. We also discuss what was supposed to be a wealthy resort town funded by a newspaper, Times Beach, Missouri. The timing was off during this development nearign the Great Depression, and the town was mainly one of rural and low income housing. It didn't help matters that the location itself was a flood plain. These were not the reasons for the town being evacuated, however and the story of how it became toxic is also one to be learned from. Lastly we travel to Mailuu-Suu in Kyrgyzstan, where multiple uranium and heavy metals dump sites were left. Between the early 1940s-late 1960s, the soviet union mined uranium in mines there using forced labor for much of the time. Once it became less economical, they just left the poorly constructed tailings dams and uranium rock piles sitting there in the open. This area in particular sits on the hillside above the village Mailuu-Suu (currently populated with about 25,000 people). Since this time mutliple earthquakes, landslides, and heavy rainfall even have caused dams to fail and uranium to fall into the river below, contaminating the water, fish, crops, and ultimately the people living there. Illness and cancer rates have increased significantly here and education about avoiding the worst contaminated areas and clean-up of the site is slow going. I am specifically bringing to your attention the many icky microbes that can infect you if you are not careful to prevent them while swimming and while on vacation. Many of these (campylobacter, E. coli, Giardia, etc) simply cause gastrointestinal illness...though these can be deadly in severe cases especially those younger than five years of age, the elderly, and those with compromised immunity. People have lost limbs thanks to such microbes as Vibrio and other horrid bacteria lurking in these aquatic environments. Lastly, I want to talk about one of my greatest fears but also one of my favorite topics to discuss: Naegleria fowleri...the brain eating amoeba. This nasty little amoebas, if allowed, can make their way up the nose, and all the way into the brain where they will quickly start eating away and destroying tissue. It is usually always fatal and only a handful of people around the world have survived. Like Vibrio, this is thankfully a rare occurrence. Still, I would avoid getting warmer fresh water up your nose...or using tap water for your Neti pots...it could literally come back to bite you...in the brain. That was lame, I know. We are back this week (a little late, forgive me) with an episode on some aquatic overgrowths that can just ruin a vacation...or seafood. In all seriousness, such bloom of these particular algae or cyanobacteria may lead to fish kills, the deaths of aquatic mammals and other wildlife, and the contamination of shellfish and seafood which causes illness in those eating them (birds, and yes, even us). Severe red tides have caused respiratory illnesses in some just being near the source and there are some algae species out there that are destructive to entire ecosystems. Along with being deadly to wildlife (and sometimes humans), these blooms cost various industries, including seafood and tourist industries, millions of dollars. So I want to introduce to you some of the worst of the offenders that honestly start off innocent enough until they start overgrowing and produce toxins that can cause everything from GI issues to neurological syptoms, paralysis, and death due to respiratory failure. While these toxins directly affect the wildlife where they grow (this includes depleting the oxygen of the environment as well as poisoning it), it can harm predators and humans as they ingest shellfish or seafood in general. Shellfish poisoning may not sound like more than simple food poisoning (which itself is not always simple) but we are discussing a few different kind here including neurotoxic and paralytic shellfish poisoning among others. Also, I would be wrong not to include cyanobacteria in this episode, because, while it is not algae itself, it does compare in how it blooms, produces toxins, and affects entire ecosystems. I wanted to bring you something a bit different today, but not too different, do not fear. I want to talk about the Dust Bowl and how it effected those living in that region as well as those outside of it as well. We also need to discuss what led to the catastrophe and we can't do that without talking about a few other issues as well, such as the Great Depression, because this was happening at the same time. When it rains, it pours, except this fun little saying can't apply literally (as I would like it to), because part of the creation of the Dust Bowl and the resulting dust storms that devastated the area and choked anything that breathed was drought. A devastating drought right at the start of an economic depression? Oh, and prohibiton was still in effect for some of this time as well, so if you just needed a drink to calm your nerves? It could be deadly because it was likely toxic wood alcohol. What were these dust storms like? We have eyewitness accounts and know the science a bit better these days behind how this happened and how it would have affected not just the landscape but those living there. Drought and depression brought malnutrition and hunger. Livestock wasted away and died either from hunger/thirst or the dust itself asphyxiating them. Whole families were affected as well. The dust could not be avoided in some areas, and those constantly in this environment often became ill with deadly dust pneumonia, debilitating and chronic lung illnesses and scarring of the lungs. We need to discuss some poisons found in the garden! My goal was to go into the poisons that can be found in the vegetable garden as well as in the flower garden, but I have to make it two parts because I somehow never realize how long I can talk about stuff! Also, Adam has capped my research at 5,000 words per episode as I struggle with stopping anything. Therefore, we are discussing some poisons that can be found in the vegetable gardens around the world. Rhubarb leaves, solanine in potatoes (at least those not stored properly), Cassava, ginkgo biloba seeds, cashews, and more. We have some fun (and some more tragic) stories behind each of these as well as the history and folklore of their growth and use. For instance, we need to talk about that time in WWI when the British government encouraged their citizens to eat rhubarb leaves while food was scarce or why it is not okay to munch on houseplants (I hope we all knew that one, but hey, make sure they are out of reach of children or pets if toxic). How about the guy who worked hard to make the potato popular in France? Did you know potatoes were actually once banned there because it was believed they could cause leprosy or plague? Well, obviously they do not, but when green they can make you very sick. Cassava! It is a staple crop in parts of South America and in Africa, but when not processed correctly, it can be deadly as they contain cyanogenic glycosides. So how do so many people eat it? And have there been any recent cases of poisoning from cassava? Unfortunately, yes. Have you ever seen a cashew tree or its fruit? A story from the Philippines gives a fun explanation for why it looks the way it does. Also, before being processed for eating, they are also poisonous, covered with the same substance that causes the itchy reaction when you touch poison ivy. How about a story concerning the six Gingko trees that survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and how their seeds can still cause accidental poisonings today. I left you with a bit of a riddle last week as to today’s topic and as you can see, we are discussing Rabies! This is an older virus (belonging to the genus of Lyssaviruses—named for the minor Greek goddess of rage and fury, Lyssa). We are focusing on the history, mythology, pathology and signs and symptoms of the disease as well as how the first rabies vaccine was developed back in 1885 and historical cures that were not effective and a little on the weird side. From stories of “Mad Dogs” to the use of “Madstones,” we are taking a walk through history on how rabies has been a formidable and fearsome enemy to humanity and wildlife alike. We will take a look at how the disease spreads and how long it may take for symptoms to show. Hopefully, for you they never do, because once symptoms show, it is nearly 100% fatal. Less than 20 people have survived rabies and we will talk over some of these cases as well. With the proper prophylactic vaccines we have now, even post exposure, it is nearly 100% preventable. We will go over what animals carry it and are affected by it and what to look for there. I will surely rant about not approaching wildlife in general if you are not experienced as a handler or whatever, because rabid or not some animals will not hesitate to defend themselves, their young, or their territory. Also, if you have any sort of encounter with an animal known to carry rabies, it is important to seek prophylactic treatment, bite or no bite. This episode has taken some time to get here, and I apologize. We had to re-record everything because things just went crazy. It is our first regular episode that is available on video, after all, and of course there were tech issues we did not foresee. However, here we are and I am excited to bring you an explanation of an illness you may have seen recently in the news, especially in relation to the deaths of the actor Gene Hackman, his wife, and dog. While Gene did have advanced Alzheimer’s disease, his the autopsy of his wife, Betsy Arakawa shows that she died of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. This is a rare, but potentially deadly, illness spread by the droppings, urine, or saliva of rodents, mainly deer mice here in America. While in other parts of the world such as Europe and Asia, it results in kidney problems and failure, the strain typically found in the Americas causes pulmonary/respiratory distress and higher rates of death as a result. There have been outbreaks of this illness such as that in the 1990s among the Four Corners region of the US, and we go into detail about that as well. So where could Betsy Arakawa have contracted this illness? Let’s discuss and avoid unhealthy assumptions, shall we? Just FYI, I wanted to discuss more than one zoonotic disease this episode, but Adam has been holding me accountable to not overdoing it. So yeah, we are going to be discussing another virus next week that is more “furious.” It is older and more well known and even has ties with Greek Mythology. Any guesses? We are back with another episode on fungi. It has been awhile since we spoke on some of our favorite poisonous mushrooms, but this time I wanted to discuss the subject of molds. Toxic black mold has long been a subject of debate within the medical community concerning just how toxic it can be to humans. Certainly, it affects those with allergies to it, chronic respiratory issues such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, and COPD. It has also been shown to cause pulmonary hemorrhage in infants and in animal studies. So let's discuss how mold grows and how it causes symptoms such as headaches, breathing problems, and confusion for some. We also need to take a look at possible deaths that were related to toxic black mold. We are also discussing invasive fungal infections this episode. No, not that bad case of ringworm or athletes foot, although those are certainly annoying. I mean that which infects the respiratory system or invades through broken skin and spreads around causing havoc in our bodies. There have been millions of deaths every year related to invasive fungal infections, many of which are related to immunosuppression such as with HIV or those on immunosuppressive drugs longterm. There are various fungi that can invade the body, but this time we are focusing on Aspergillus (causing aspergillosis). I could not do another episode on fungi without including some fun ones such as whiskey fungus and radiotrophic fungi. Nor could I leave out the subject of one of the most well known video games/shows these days: The Last of Us. Yep, we are also going in to cordyceps and how it hijacks it hosts, leading them to an unfortunate demise so it can propagate more of the parasitic fungi. We also discuss a few famous musicians that may have been affected by lead poisoning. I may have gone pretty deep into the history of some of these artists, but they are fascinating. Vincent Van Gogh had many physical and mental ailments and they may very well have been exacerbated by the many toxic paints he was in contact with. Lead in wine may be why musicians such Handel and Beethoven lost their sight and hearing (respectively) and suffered other physical and mental ailments. This is a long one, because I was too stubborn to make it two parts. I feel it is time we discuss Measles. It is making a bit of a come back in Europe and in the US, but I don't think many people know much about the illness apart from it involving a rash and such. Measles is one of the most contagious diseases that we know of. It is not the same as chicken pox (though that one does such as well), and it can lead to lasting disabilities and death in some cases, especially in young children. Many of you may have seen the recent death of a Texas child because of Measles, for instance. While there are people who get through the virus unscathed, we cannot predict who will end up dying or left with longterm complications (even some that do not show up until years after the original infection). It is estimated that 1 in five people who catch measles will end up hospitalized. We also discuss Mumps and Rubella this episode, because the typical vaccine for Measles also protects agains these two as well. Speaking of vaccines, we just had to go into the ingredients, purpose, and mechanisms of those in general and in the MMR vaccine specifically. Lastly, we need to discuss where the anti-vaccination stuff started and that involves the history of Andrew Wakefield and his fraudulent paper that was later retracted. This is the man who put forth (and still promotes) the reason for fears that have led to a decline in childhood vaccines. He lost his medical license but still makes good money off his supporters. Spring is nearly upon us and I've been thinking about all the gardening possibilities but also the return of all the annoying pests that make gardening and being outside (especially in the South of the US) so difficult. So, I thought it would be a good time to discuss pesticides. Well, the ones we have not covered yet, because remember, arsenic, lead, mercury, cyanide, and many of the murderous elements and compounds we have discussed in the past were also used in pesticides. I wanted to go big this time and discuss those used in large scale agriculture or pest control for disease spreading insect (like those pesky and sometimes deadly mosquitoes). We are talking about the organochlorines (mainly DDT), the organophosphates (which were also involved in chemical warfare), and a few others that were used for more nefarious purposes...like murder. We are looking into the history, uses, abuses, and consequences (short term and long term) of such chemicals, as well as when and why some were banned in various places. The title here as a "double edged sword" really fits because, on the one hand, it kills disease causing insects, but there is always a cost... Thank you to all of our listeners and supporters! I hope you are all well and staying safe! I was pondering the pollution of our worlds waterways this week and thought we could take on the discussion of some toxic and polluted (sometimes deadly) rivers. Obviously, I cannot speak on every single river that could qualify for these titles in one episode, so if you like this topic then we can do more in a future episode. Today however we are visiting West Java, Indonesia, where the Citarum River supplies water for drinking, bathing, cleaning, and irrigation for crops for millions of people. There also happen to be around 2,000 industries on its banks dumping waste such as heavy metals and toxic byproducts into the water. Solid waste such as plastic, diapers, and other household trash is also dumped in and along the river by residents of the capital city of Bandung and many villages living near its waters. In some areas, you cannot even see the surface of the water and dead fish and other animals float alongside the rubbish. This along with livestock waste and human sewage has made the river dangerous to those living near it and using it on a daily basis. We also discuss the Rio Tinto in Spain, where the water runs orange-red to blood red in color due to over 5,000 years of mining in the area. The water is acidic and filled with heavy metals and other mining byproducts. Oh, and we have to discuss the company that now operates the mine, conveniently called the Rio Tinto Company, and their many shady dealings all over the world. The Ganges is well known for a few things: it is a holy site for Hindus and it is heavily polluted with untreated sewage, human remains, industrial waste, and agricultural run-off. The water quality has been so bad that the incidence for illness after getting into the water is over 65%. Even, so, many Hindu pilgrims come to bathe ritually in this river and to dispose of human ashes as it is considered a place where sins are forgiven. I had to put at least one US river on here (because there are a lot of polluted rivers here as well), so I decided to go with the Ohio River (a hard decision as I was also thinking of the Mississippi and the Hudson as well). Most of the pollution here is caused by past industrial waste (including PFAs, dioxin, benzene, etc) and agricultural run-off. Oh and as a bonus, we head to the jungles of Peru to talk about one of my favorite rivers. Thank you to all of our listeners and supporters!
