×"There's absolutely no information in the signal." For decades now, an odd and mysterious audio signal has operated on the shortwave spectrum. Since the late 1970s, a strange pulsating sound has repeated at 4625 kilohertz. There is never a formal introduction. There are no hosts or music. Only on occasion will a voice step in, and when it does, it reads off some words and names in a monotonous Russian accent before disappearing once more. No country or agency has ever attempted to claim or explain the signal. Rumors persist about its purpose: everything from a "dead hand" nuclear deterrent controlled by the Russian government to a channel marker acting as a placeholder. However, after more than four decades, the signal's meaning remains unknown to the world at large... "I have no doubt they died of an experiment with psychic forces for which they were ill-prepared and which turned out to be fatal." By the end of 1967, the official investigation into the Lead Masks Case was brought to a close. The final police report listed the cause of death for both Miguel José Viana and Manoel Pereira da Cruz as undetermined. There was no evidence of foul play. No external injuries. No signs of trauma. The bodies had not been robbed, nor had they been bound or restrained. No crime, as defined by Brazilian law, had seemingly taken place... “16:30 be at the specified location. 18:30 ingest capsules, after effect protect metals await signal mask.” On 20 August 1966, a teenager was flying a kite on Vintém Hill, a rural location outside of Niterói, Brazil. He wasn't looking for anything unusual that Saturday afternoon, but partway up the hill, he discovered what looked like two mannequins. He'd rush home and tell his mother, who immediately alerted police. Hours later, authorities arrived at the scene and documented what they found: two men laying side by side on the grass, arms and legs outstretched. There was no sign of violence or a struggle of any kind. But the other objects found at the scene - including a pair of strange, homemade lead masks worn by the two men - have led to a litany of unanswered questions in the decades since... "Finding her body has burnt an indelible image in my mind. It is something a father should never have to suffer." On the morning of 22 October 2018, family and friends of missing 24-year-old Toyah Cordingley would scour the area around Wangetti Beach, a quiet and secluded stretch of sand not too far away from Toyah's hometown of Cairns. There - partially buried in sand dunes - Toyah's body would be found, having endured "visible, violent injuries" before her death. In the years since, police officials have remained tight-lipped about the specific details of their sprawling investigation. But it is believed that they have formulated a good case around the only named suspect, who fled the country just hours after Toyah's death... This is a re-release of an older episode. Because of some expected updates in the case, I wanted to catch everyone up on the story before the next update episode. "... they don't say whether she's still alive or where she is or what her name is. They don't tell you anything but that she was a middle-aged woman who was inspired by God and God spoke to her, so she started speaking God's word." In September 2021, a mysterious Reddit account surfaced, claiming to be the long-lost leader of a controversial religious movement. The user, /u/yang_xiangbin, posted about an abusive marriage, exile, and an unexpected role in the rise of a group known as the Church of Almighty God - aka "Eastern Lightning" - an organization the Chinese government has labeled a dangerous cult. Was this an elaborate hoax, or had one of the most elusive figures in modern religious history just reappeared online? "OFFICER SHOT. WHITE CHEVY VAN. NO PLATE." In the early morning hours of 27 October 2006, Deputy Jeffrey Mitchell of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office told dispatchers that he was pulling over a white Chevy van off of rural Highway 16. Seven minutes later, his radio "keyed," a common sign of distress. After failing to respond to calls on his radio and cell phone, dispatchers sent out other deputies to Mitchell's last known location with lights and sirens. Arriving just minutes later, officers found Deputy Mitchell laying on the ground near his vehicle, bleeding from a single gunshot wound to the head. As they'd soon learn, he'd been shot with his own weapon during a "significant struggle" with an unknown person... "His personal details were never known to him, and he could only assume his origins based on a nameplate he had as a child." On 24 June 1955, a Czechoslovakian State Security Patrol detained an unknown man near the Slovak-Polish border. Carrying no identification, the man communicated almost entirely through hand gestures. During interrogation, authorities would discover that he was deaf and mute, although both claims were met with a fair amount of skepticism. A comprehensive, nationwide investigation failed to turn up any sign of his identity. Over the next twenty-six years, through many twists and turns, the man insisted that he was a Czechoslovakian citizen named Karel Novák. "At this point, I just want closure for the family... I just want to be able to bury my friend." When 36-year-old Chip Campbell vanished from his Florida home in 2016, his life was already spiraling out of control. His house was found in disarray, his dog left outside, and his personal belongings scattered. Days later, he was last seen at a local gas station, looking disheveled and carrying backpacks that would later be recovered under mysterious circumstances. With ties to substance abuse, suspicious activity at his home, and a roommate with a criminal history, Chip's disappearance raises more questions than answers. Was he trying to escape his troubles, or did something more sinister happen? "When I walked into the bedroom there was a huge stink in the room, like a real horrible aroma of sulfur and burnt motor. It was all around and it was coming out of his pores." The 1960s were a decade defined by exploration, both earthly and cosmic. As the world watched the space race unfold between the United States and the Soviet Union, public fascination with what lay beyond Earth’s atmosphere reached new heights. It was against this backdrop of UFO fervor that Stefan Michalak’s strange encounter at Falcon Lake occurred in May 1967... "She was wanting to go out and see somebody. She wouldn't tell me who." On the morning of March 6th, 2012, the body of thirteen-year-old Jessica Funk-Haslam was found inside a locked baseball dugout at a public park. Jessica, who went to school just a stone's throw away from this park, had been acting up in the months before her death. She had begun rebelling - as most teenagers do - but had begun hanging around a rather rough crowd. In a final act of defiance, she had stormed out of her mother's apartment without telling her where she was going or who she was meeting up with. Over the next several years, detectives would struggle to determine why Jessica had been targeted by a particularly violent killer. It wasn't until August of 2014 that investigators began to set their sights on a suspect: a young man named Ryan Roberts... "Hello? Is it me you're looking for?" In November of 2014, 6-year-old Julia Potter went missing. She was last seen in the care of her father, Jason, who'd had a scheduled visit with Julia that fateful weekend. As police would later learn, Jason had willingly fled from his North Seattle home, having informed his lawyers beforehand that he was "going off the grid." In the years that have passed, rumors have swirled around where Jason and Julia have been. Some theorize that Jason's family and friends, scattered throughout western Washington, have been providing them shelter. Police speculate that the two may have fled to Asia. In 2013, a user on 4chan posted audio from an alleged radio hijacking that was purported to have taken place in the mid-1990s. Since then, theories have sprung up that the station affected, New York's WKCR, was hijacked in 1995, while others speculate that the audio itself is fabricated. "We think that the person or persons... sought him out specifically. We don't think that this was a random act of violence that could have been anybody. Jim Duckett, a 43-year-old U.S. Army veteran, had not been seen or heard from in more than a day, having been a no-show at his church the prior morning. Attempts to reach him via telephone had been unsuccessful, and his truck was missing from his driveway. Hysterical investigates a mysterious illness that spreads among a group of high school girls in upstate New York. What is causing their sudden, often violent symptoms? Is there something in the water or inside the school? Or is it “all in their head?” The series examines the outbreak in LeRoy, NY, believed by some to be the most severe case of mass hysteria since the Salem Witch Trials. In his search for answers, Dan Taberski (9/12, Missing Richard Simmons, Running from Cops) explores other seemingly inexplicable events of the last few years – CIA officers being crippled with nausea and vertigo; cops OD'ing from exposure to fentanyl – and discovers they’re far more connected than we realize. From Wondery and Pineapple Street Studios, this 7-part series forces us to grapple with the mysteries of our own minds, and reckon with a contagion that we thought was long dead, but may be the defining disorder of our time. "How can a child be missing for two years - or even a second?" On 19 January 2024, a 9-1-1 call was received by authorities in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The caller told dispatchers that her adopted son, 17-year-old Blake Deven, had gone missing. Strangely, though, she was unable to identify where she'd last seen him - or when. While police would originally label Blake a runaway, that would change in the months ahead. Two months later, police were again called out to the Deven home on an unrelated matter. From there, however, it became apparent to investigators that something was amiss. Not only had Blake been missing for approximately two years, but they would determine that another family member of his, 27-year-old London Deven, had not been seen since 2019... "We don't know who committed the crime but we do know that our local law enforcement didn't react the way they should have." On the evening of 7 March 2014, police dispatchers in Dallas, Texas received a call from the grandmother of a 24-year-old woman that had only been missing for a couple of hours, but had gone missing under extremely distressing circumstances. Just hours beforehand, her family had received an unintentional call from her in which it sounded like she was being physically abused. By all indications, she'd been fighting for her life. What they received, however, was a frustrating response that ultimately led to an overhaul in how certain 9-1-1 calls are handled in the state of Texas... "It's like those three missing girls from Springfield that still haven't been found... it's just been an ongoing thing." On 7 June 1992, Sherrill Levitt, 47, her daughter Suzanne Streeter, 19, and Suzanne’s friend Stacy McCall, 18, vanished without a trace. Despite decades of investigation and multiple efforts to revive the case, authorities have continually faced the same dead ends encountered in the initial probe. Over the years, the mystery has captivated amateur sleuths and online communities, who’ve developed countless theories in an attempt to explain the trio’s disappearance. Now, as the 33rd anniversary approaches, their fate remains one of the most frustratingly unsolved cases in modern history... "All we could say is missing. There's no end. There's no end to that story." In November of 1995, the Missouri Violence Crime Support Unit finalized a review of Springfield P.D.'s investigation into the disappearance of Sherrill Levitt, Suzanne Streeter, and Stacy McCall. During their analysis, they agreed with the suspect list developed by investigators, but believed they should be re-prioritized. This led investigators to shuffle up the deck and begin exploring suspects they'd earlier discounted. First came Robert Craig Cox, a known abductor and armed robber that was connected to a number of other crimes, including a well-known series of shooting deaths from 1992 and 1993. Then came Larry DeWayne Hall, an alleged serial killer that had been terrorizing young women throughout the Midwest for over a decade, leading to his arrest in December of 1994. They, along with Suzie's brother, Bartt Streeter, found themselves under suspicion as the first decade of the case came to a close... "... we've run out of leads to work... there's just nothing coming in." In 1995, authorities decided to suspend the investigation into the disappearance of three women from Springfield, Missouri. This decision followed years of sporadic progress, including a grand jury review in 1994 that ultimately concluded without issuing any indictments. However, later that year, Steven Garrison - a suspect with tenuous ties to the case - stood trial for an unrelated crime. Strangely, that crime revealed an eerie connection to the Springfield Three’s mysterious disappearance in 1992... "I'm beginning to think they're probably at the bottom of a lake somewhere. If they were alive, I'm sure, surely by now, somehow they would have contacted us." In the days, weeks, and months following the disappearance of three women from Springfield, Missouri, a high-profile search ensued. Authorities attempted to turn over every stone in the women's past, hoping they'd find some tantalizing lead that would point directly to them. Sadly, no such evidence was unearthed. As the loved ones of the three women struggled to grieve with this uncertainty weighing upon them, investigators highlighted certain bits of evidence that they hoped would lead to answers... "The only thing unusual about this house was that three women were missing from it. You had this feeling as you looked around that something was missing, that something had to be missing. But there wasn't. Just them." On the afternoon of Saturday, 6 June 1992, 19-year-old Suzanne "Suzie" Streeter and 18-year-old Stacy McCall graduated from Kickapoo High School in Springfield, Missouri. Stacy's parents were in attendance that day, as was Suzanne's mother, 47-year-old Sherrill Levitt. Spirits were high that evening as Suzie and Stacy celebrated with friends, staying out until just after 2:00 AM on June 7th. Hoping to get an early start on more festivities the next morning, the two friends drove back to Suzie and Sherrill's house along the 1700 block of East Delmar Street... "Love for ever - Louise" Throughout 1935, investigators in Kansas City struggled to not only determine the identity of the man calling himself "Roland T. Owen," but also had to untangle the strange circumstances that had led up to his death. It was clear that someone had wished to inflict pain upon Owen, but police could only speculate why. Meanwhile, the family of a missing young man from Birmingham, Alabama had been unable to locate any trace of him for over a year. Their search would end up intersecting with the ongoing investigation from Kansas City in the waning days of 1936, but in doing so, would end up raising even more questions... "My impression of this man from the expressions on his face and from his actions was that he was either worried about something or afraid." On Wednesday, 2 January 1935, a young man arrived at the Hotel President in Kansas City, Missouri. Claiming to be from Los Angeles, he told the front desk his name was Roland T. Owen and requested an interior room several floors up. Staff there accommodated him, assigning him a room on the tenth floor that overlooked the hotel's courtyard. Over the next two days, people would recall strange run-ins with Owen, including a few peculiar experiences in his room with hotel staff. But just two days later, after repeated attempts at rousing this guest for his morning wake-up call, a bellhop would make a grisly discovery inside of room 1046... "They would feel the need to wait for higher blood pressure, wait for a higher fever - really got to justify this one - bleed a little bit more." On the evening of 18 August 2022, Amber Thurman was rushed to the Piedmont Henry Hospital in Stockbridge, Georgia. The 28-year-old single mother had been experiencing cramping and bleeding for days, and was beginning to vomit blood. After losing consciousness, her boyfriend had called 9-1-1 and requested an ambulance. After arriving at the hospital that evening, doctors would diagnose Amber with an infection that was quickly evolving into sepsis. They'd learn that Amber had recently undergone a medication abortion and needed a life-saving procedure known as a dilation and curettage (D&C). However, because of the recent repeal of Roe v. Wade, as well as Georgia's pre-existing abortion ban, doctors hesitated to perform the D&C. Meanwhile, Amber's condition worsened... "A first responder unwilling to place the lives of the innocent above their own safety should consider another career field." School shootings have become a tragic and recurring part of American life, with events like Columbine, Sandy Hook, and Parkland forever altering how we think about safety in our schools. Each incident has reignited debates about gun control, mental health, and the responsibility of those tasked with protecting students. Yet, despite the changes in policy and heightened awareness, this endless cycle of violence continues to haunt entire communities. In May 2022, the town of Uvalde, Texas, became the site of another devastating school shooting that shocked the nation. "Meet me at 2:00 PM at the Greyhound bus station. You know he's dead. If you want to know who killed him, I have the proof." In the summer of 1979, two youngsters in West Virginia struck up a fling. 25-year-old Mazie Mae Sigmon-Palmer was recently divorced and 18-year-old Jay Farley was fresh out of high school. Both were in transitory phases of their lives and recognized that their relationship was likely temporary, but they seemed to be enjoying it while it lasted. On the evening of July 14th, the two met up at a nightclub in downtown Charleston, called the Roaring Twenties. There, they hung out for a bit and even talked with some friends of theirs. But at some point that night, both would vanish. It wasn't until years later that evidence surfaced revealing what had happened to one of them, but the circumstances of their initial disappearance - and what led up to it - remain clouded in mystery...
