What can we say for sure about China? Many of us can rattle off some incredible statistics. It is a manufacturing and technology powerhouse. China ran up an astonishing $1 trillion dollar surplus in 2024. China builds more EVs than all other countries combined. And China has enough capacity to supply total global demand for batteries. We know these facts. But what we know much less well is how to engage with Chinese business people in a productive way that leads to successful outcomes. That's been a giant black hole for many Western business people. Fortunately, a giant dose of help is on the way in the form of a tremendous new book by Ken Wilcox called The Chinese Business Conundrum: Ensuring Win-Win Doesn't Mean Western Companies Twice. Mr Wilcox, the former CEO of Silicon Valley Bank, also ran SVB's joint venture bank in China. He shares extremely valuable inside views of realities on the ground.…

Europe's aim is to become a global leader in adopting next generation clean technologies. In the first phase, beginning in 2020, the focus was on meeting ambitious emission reductions goals. Four years later, the European Commission is making an important adjustment to its strategy. The new goal is to have Europe be a global leader in adopting and producing those technologies. They call it the Clean Industrial Deal. Some background: Up until very recently, Europe's climate goals were met by sourcing many advanced clean energy technologies from China, including solar panels and electric vehicles. European leaders quickly understood that it would be far better for companies within Europe to produce the clean technologies than to import them from China or other countries. Joining us today to walk us through the new era is Barbara Glowacka of the EU Commission. She advises leaders at the highest levels of power in the European Commission on energy and law.…

Europe wants to go green in a hurry. China has EVs to help Europe achieve their goal faster. What's the problem? The problem is that too many Chinese cars are flooding into France, Germany and Italy And that is putting enormous pressure on Europe's auto industry. Making things worse, European brands' sales are skidding in China, which used to be their forever profit machines. VW is now talking about closing three plants and laying off tens of thousands. And we are not even in a recession. Joining me to make sense of the pressure - he calls it a schism - is Roger Atkins, founder of Electric Vehicles Outlook. How will Europe see things through from here? Roger will also share what he loves and what he loves much less about driving his all-electric ID Buzz, the retro bus from VW. Along the way, we will also learn how to say sh-t-show in Chinese. Yes, I promise you there is such a word.…

One of the most significant limiters to EV adoption in America is the dreaded charging experience. Where do I find the nearest station? Wil, the chargers work? Do I need an app? Will I be safe sitting alone in my car for thirty minutes? Who can I call if things go wrong? In this episode, we learn from Christopher Balcom of Schneider Electric that improvements are on the way. Specifically, the mission is to simplify the charging experience by bringing several separate parts - the hardware, the software, the installer and the carmakers – together to form a seamless experience.…

Here is a candidate for the single most important development in the global auto industry this year: One of every two new cars sold in China this year will be electric. Half! In the US and Europe, we are experiencing a kind of EV wheel spin. EVs as a share of total sales in America still hover under 10%. Europe is a bit higher at 15%, but the pace of growth has slowed dramatically. Why is EV demand growing so much faster in China than in the West? One big factor is the cost of batteries. That is where China enjoys a massive advantage. But the game is not over. Startups in the West, like OneD Battery Sciences, are developing better battery chemistries that deliver higher energy density at lower costs. What are they working on? How soon will we see breakthrough batteries? And how might the US electric change the landscape? To get answers, listen to Vincent Pluvinage and K.T. Neumann.…

It is no secret that electric cars are fast - very fast. But for many drivers, EVs like Tesla or Lucid - even Porsche - do not seem to fuel quite the same emotion as sports cars powered by internal combustion engines. To borrow the French term, the piece de resistance seems to be missing. This makes today's buyers ask: What is the point of driving a sports car if you're not feeling something extraordinary? Toni Piech and Tobias Moers agree. That is why they have set out a vision for an electric sports car that will be quick, very enjoyable to drive and extraordinarily talented when it comes to getting your adrenaline flowing. They will call it the Piech GT. And it will be ready for launch in 2028. They have set the highest bar. The goal is to make it even better than the Porsche Taycan in performance and excitement. So, what will separate the Piech GT from Porsche and everything else on the road? Let's find out. Toni Piech, Founder and Tobias Moers, CEO, Piech Automotive.…

In his best-selling book, Sapiens, Yuval Noah Harari describes the most important feature that separates human beings from all other species on the planet: Imagination. We have the ability to imagine something that does not (yet) exist, communicate the concept to others and persuade them to believe it. As a concrete example, he cites the limited liability company, an idea first hatched by the Dutch back in the 1600s. Today we are going to explore the imaginative idea of Web 3.0, an ambitious project to take usout of the quagmire that has become Web 2.0. The basic goal is to create a private internet that is much safer and more efficient than what we have today. Getting there will require imagination, education and a lot of believing. To get us on the path, we are very pleased to have as our guest Tram Vo, co-founder of MOBI, an organization that is building the infrastructure to make Web 3.0 possible.…

Dr. Ilaria Mazzocco and her colleagues at CSIS found that Chinese subsidies to companies in strategic industries are more than twice as high as in other countries. The numbers are not insignificant. This week, we learned that BYD secured some $3.4 billion in subsidies in 2023 alone. As a group Chinese automakers have benefited from tens of billions of dollars in supply side and consumer subsidies since 2010. Complicating the picture, however, is the reality that China is also home to some fast-moving, highly innovative firms led by people who work harder and sometimes smarter than their peers in the West. Today, Ilaria and I dive deeper into the question of Chinese state capitalism, subsidies and how the West can respond to the rising tide - call it a tsunami - of low-cost, good quality Chinese automotive exports.…

The world is in the midst of a monumental transition from fossil fuels to critical minerals. Those critical minerals, like lithium, cobalt and nickel, are the key ingredients in the batteries that power electric cars, cell phones, electric lawn mowers and more. Today, the minerals are extracted from the ground at mining sites around the world. Massive lithium deposits, for example, are located in Australia, Chile and Argentina. China has minerals, too. China also controls most of the world's mineral processing. As America and Europe step into the critical minerals era, there is a desire for greater access to and control over critical minerals. Now, teams of expert geologists are uncovering new deposits in North America. But after finding the minerals, the mining companies and their investors are confronting unexpected hurdles to clear before they can start mining. Indigenous groups and environmentalists are saying: "Not so fast" to new mines. This week on the Driving With Dunne, Ernest Scheyder, author of The War Below, gives us an inside look at the heating and complex battles over the rights to mine critical minerals.…

It is time to take an honest look at battery technologies. The fact is that batteries that power electric cars today have many limitations. There are limits to the range they can deliver. There are limits to how quickly you can charge them. And there are limits to how many times they can be charged before they start losing their full capacity. And then there are limits to their safety. Lithium-ion battery fires are rare. But once a lithium battery catches fire, it is not easy to put out. These limitations are problems that fire the imagination of entrepreneurs. Hey, let's find a solution, they say, let's improve people's lives and maybe get outrageously wealthy along the way. One of those breakthrough battery solutions on the horizon is known as silicon batteries. When you reduce graphite and add more silicon to the anode, magical things can happen. Many say that price is the single biggest limiter to EV demand in Western countries. In the United States, the average price of a new EV is $53,000. In Europe, the number is even higher - $60,000. On the other hand, China produces EVs across the price spectrum – from $5,500 to $160,000. Why is it so hard to match China on cost? What steps must Western automakers - and governments - take to compete with Chinese firms? The key is batteries. David Barboza won a Pulitzer prize for a blockbuster story he wrote while reporting in China for the New York Times. The story took years to research and write. Here is how things got started: Barboza had challenged himself with a daring and impossible goal. Would it be feasible, he wondered, to gather evidence that powerful leaders in China's Communist Party were amassing great wealth? He figured that if he were able to prove that a high-ranking family had assets of around $5 million dollars, it would be a massive coup. Never in a million years did he dream that his investigations would uncover that the Prime Minister's family had accrued more than 2 billion dollars in concealed wealth - company shares, cash, diamonds, gold and homes. In this week's Driving With Dunne episode, Mr Barboza brings us, step by step, into the events as they unfolded, as he experienced them. "The longer it takes you to publish the story," security experts at the New York Times told him, "the more dangerous things will get."…

For most of his career, Tony Posawatz was a highly successful engineer working in GM's lucrative truck division. That meant big rigs powered by gasoline and diesel engines. Then one day in 2006 GM's top leadership appointed him to lead a breakthrough initiative. "Build us an electric car that will make people forget all about the Toyota Prius," they said. GM had taken a shot at an all-electric vehicle in the 1990s called the EV1. Tony and his team of top notch GM engineers knew that the way to beat the Prius was to go electric. But range anxiety was an issue. So, they got inventive and designed a propulsion system that featured both an electric battery and a gasoline engine. This set-up, in time, would become known as a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle or a PHEV. That product, which debuted 11 years ago, served as a bridge to a barrage of pure electrics like the Tesla Model 3, the Hyundai IONIQ, the Mustang Mach E, the Rivians and the Lucids now hitting the market today. How far along have we advanced on the path to electrics. And how much work still remains to be done before we reach electric nirvana?…

Here is the powerful China formula for commercial dominance that everyone needs to know. Build up massive capacity. Achieve scale. Reduce costs. And then export like a bat out of hell all over the world. This is exactly how China overwhelmed the solar panel industry. Will cars be next? You bet. In fact, it is already happening. China today has the capacity to build 40 million cars and trucks a year. Domestic demand is about half of that. So, this year, China will export 5 million vehicles to more than 100 markets worldwide this year. And, that is not all. As China's domestic economy stalls, there is more pressure, more incentive to export than ever before. Mr Jorge Guajardo joins us again this week for Part II of our conversation about what to expect as Chinese companies push into global markets. They will be bringing stunningly low priced items from cars to used bulldozers to cement mixers. Are you ready for the barrage?…

Who supplies the most cars to the Mexican market? If you guessed China, you are not wrong. China is flooding the market with low cost gasoline-powered and electric vehicles. Leading brands include SAIC-MG, Great Wall and Chery. But there's more. One of every two vehicles GM sells in Mexico is built in China. Meanwhile, Chinese suppliers are pouring into supporting Tesla's Giga 6 factory in Monterrey. What do Mexico's leaders make of this mass Chinese arrival? Will the Chinese automakers use Mexico as a base camp for invading the US market? With me today is Jorge Guajardo, former Mexican ambassador to China. He was there for six full years. I I really appreciate Jorge's knowledge of how Chinese people think and his candor. He of course also knows the top people - Jorge met with BYD founder Wang Chuanfu more than ten years ago. What did he see and hear from Wang that made the biggest impression?…

Never before in the history of humanity have we had so many choices when it comes to what we drive. Think about it: We have cars, pickup trucks, SUVs, crossovers. station wagons. On size we run the spectrum from the tiny Mini Cooper beastly Hummer. And now these vehicles might be powered by gasoline engines, hybrids, batteries or hydrogen. Some of them even drive themselves, well almost. The average consumer has hundreds of options to choose from. So, how on earth do you land on exactly the right one for you? The process can be all-consuming and overwhelming. Thank goodness we can turn to experts for advice, people who know cars intimately from direct experience. Today's guest, Nicole Wakelin, is exactly that kind of an expert. She test drivs 80 vehicles a year, she has a very good eye for detail and a memory like steel trap. How much do you know about Taiwan? Until recently, most people in the world, if they were being honest, would say practically nothing. But not today. Today, Taiwan finds itself in a highly precarious situation. The People's Republic of China has clear its intentions to integrate Taiwan, to take control of the island and its 22 million residents. Not so fast, say the people of Taiwan. And the are not alone. The United States - most economies around the world, are heavily reliant on Taiwan for supply of the advanced chips that power everything from iPhone to Teslas. China cannot tolerate a future where Taiwan is separate from China. America and its allies cannot accept such a Chinese takeover. Two powerful forces diametrically opposed. How will this high stakes drama play out? Joining is today is Bethany Allen, author of a tremendous new book called Beijing Rules. Bethny, who lives and works in Taiwan, gives us her view on how China plans to take control of Taiwan. And how they might even get it done without firing a shot. Wait - how is that even possible?…

BYD is an electric vehicle powerhouse. Already dominant globally in buses and trucks, BYD is now chasing Tesla for world leadership in battery-powered electric vehicles. The Shenzhen-based company will produce more than 3 million electric vehicles in 2023. Many of those cars and SUVs will find their way to global markets including Thailand, Mexico, Germany, the UK, Australia and Japan. For the casual observer, BYD might appear to be an overnight sensation. But this is not that case. BYD is a 30-year old company that persevered through lots of twists and turns before finally gaining traction in the late 2010s. In this Driving With Dunne episode, I have a conversation with my producer, Chris Donovan, to recount how BYD grew from an unknown battery maker for cellphones in the 1990s into a global champion in electrics today. What do we know about BYD's founder, Wang Chuanfu. How soon will we see BYD cars on American roads? Think of batteries for electric cars as the most important American industrial movement since WWII. Investors are pouring more than $100 billion into new battery plants across the country, from South Carolina to Georgia, from Ohio to Michigan. There's new battery factories coming up in Kansas, Texas and Arizona, too. These battery manufacturing sites are supported by a growing pack of new companies hell-bent on building out America's battery supply chains - minerals, processing and recycling. America's explosion in battery manufacturing is an urgent response to the competitive threats posed by a dominant China. There are national security concerns. There are worries about economic dependence on an increasingly hostile adversary. Our special guest this week is Chris Berry, founder, House Mountain Partners, a research and advisory firm based in Washington DC. Chris is a highly respected expert on batteries and global battery supply chains. Drive the streets of San Diego and it will feel like the whole world is going electric. Here is a Tesla Model 3. There is a Hyundai Ioniq 5. Look at that Lucid Air. Or that cyber orange Mach E. Take your driving to the northern climes, like Detroit, Michiganor Green Bay, Wisconsin, and the picture looks totally different. There full-size pickup trucks and SUVs powered by gasoline engines rule the road. Electrics are simply hard to find, like some endangered species. What explains the dramatic difference? Why is California covered in EVs while people in the north are hanging onto their gasoline powered vehicles? Today’s charging experience in North America is, to be blunt, not good. New EV owners meet disappointment in the very first weeks of ownership. Some chargers are broken. Others are slow. Imagine a future in which car buyers choose a make and model based not on acceleration, handling and braking but on their digital cockpit experience. How well does the navigation work? How rich are the media options? How quick and intuitive is the interface. Guess what? That future is already here. People, especially younger people, want to enjoy their digital life inside the vehicles while they are in stop and go traffic delivering kids to school or going to work. In a recent survey of iPhone users, 67% of respondents said that their next car must offer Apple Carplay compatibility or they would look somewhere else. This is very good news for Apple of course. Pomfret's landmark book, The Beautiful Country and The Middle Kingdom, is a tour de force that traces the relationship between the United States and China over the past 220 years. It is a relationship that shifts from wonderfully warm to icy cold and back -- over and over and over again. Pomfret's newest book, From Warsaw With Love, takes us to Central Europe to uncover the special relationship between the the spy networks in Warsaw and Washington. This relationship has never been more important, given Russia's invasion of Ukraine and China's unrelenting efforts to swing Europe in its favor. Pomfret is smart, direct and street-smart. #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

Meet VinFast, Vietnam's young, bold and relentless EV champion. In late December, 2022, Madame Thuy Le, VinFast CEO, supervised operations at the port in Haiphong as the first 999 VinFast VF 8s were loaded aboard a ship to San Francisco. This month, American customers started taking delivery of the all-electric crossovers. The speed with which 5-year old VinFast started exporting cars to America is unprecedented. Remember that Japanese and Korean automakers worked for decades before gathering the resources and the courage to put their products to the test with American consumers. How did VinFast get ready so quickly? And how does the little-known company plan to win the trust of American car buyers? In this episode, CEO Thuy Le walks us through the pivotal early days of VinFast. We also discover how she carves aside time for a special hobby that requires 4:30am wakeups. #WinningInAsia / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

In November, 2022 Lordstown Motors began delivering Endurance full-size electric trucks to fleet customers in America. Lordstown, named after the city in northeast, Ohio, represents an important new chapter in America's automotive manufacturing history. Lordstown is the designer and engineer of the electric vehicle. Samsung supplies the battery. And Foxconn, the powerhouse Taiwanese maker of our iPhones and iPads, is the manufacturer of the final product. This marks an important step in Foxconn's ambitions to weave itself into the fabric of American industry. The relationship also allows Lordstown to work with Foxconn MIH to develop other future vehicles from a single platform. What this means for Joe or Jane pickup truck customer: Potentially many more affordable choices for American consumers beyond the offerings from legacy players in Detroit, Wolfsburg, Seoul and Tokyo. #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

There is a once-in-a-hundred-years revolution underway in Europe. For many decades, cities in Europe have been built to serve the car. Now the mayors of cities like Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Brussels are taking steps to change roads into living spaces for people, bicycles, trees, flowers and kids playgrounds. People are taking to the streets to take back the streets. Cars are still welcome but now they are woven together with other ways to get around. This movement has been led by a cast of highly impressive women like Anne Hildago, Mayor of Paris and Sophie Haestorp Anderson Lord Mayor of Copenhangen. We can now add a new star to this list: Elke van den Brandt, Minister of Mobility for Brussels. Elke joins us today to tell the story of how she and her team in Brussels are opening up the city to many forms of transportation, safer and quieter streets and cleaner air. #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

Imagine you're in the market for a full size pickup truck. And you like the F-150, America's best-selling vehicle for the past 40 years. But, wait, there's a new twist in the decision-making process. Should you get a gasoline-powered F-150 or the electric F-150 Lightning? To get answers, we turn to our guest today, Darren Palmer. Darren is the Vice President of Electric Vehicles in Ford's Model e division. Darren reports to Doug Field, recently recruited from Apple, and Field reports to CEO Jim Farley. Put another way, Darren is way up there at Ford and knows the Lightning specs and performance better than anyone on the planet. In this week's Driving With tDunne conversation, I ask Darren a simple but tough question. If I choose the Lighting over the gasoline F-150, what am I gaining -- and what am I giving up? Palmer shares some remarkable data bophut F-150 Lightning customers. More than half of them never owned a Ford before. And close to 80% had never owned an electric vehicle. Palmer makes the compelling argument that the Lightning is a new product category, fundamentally different from the F-150s powered by engines. This episode lets you listen to Darren and make your own conclusions. #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

When she was an engineering student at MIT, Kristin Slanina led her team to victory in a solar car race through five states in America's northeast. That early achievement inspired Kristin, decades later, to launch Charge Across America, a contest featuring teams driving from New York to Los Angeles in five different electric cars. The main purpose of the competition was to assess the readiness of America's charging networks. How reliable, how fast, how convenient? In this episode Kristin recounts the highs and lows of the cross-country drive. And she also gives a grade to American's EV charging networks as they stand today. And what American can be doing to speed the pace of change to cleaner, greener, cheaper energy. #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

In Part I of this conversation, Reilly Brennan described how the days of late October, 2022 will go down in history as some of the most important in the history of autonomous vehicles. In the space of just a few days, one company (Argo AI) went out of business, Tesla was taken to court for its Autopilot system and Reilly Brennan experienced a transcendent "before and after" moment when taking the Cruise robotaxi on a flawless 40 minute trip through the street of San Francisco. In this week's Part 2 of the conversation we look at the next giant hurdle for autonomous vehicles: Profitability. Cruise, Waymo, Baisu and other AV companies are still plowing through tens of billions of dollars in development costs. When will these companies be able to scale up their robotaxi fleets in multiple cities and become commercially viable? Put another way, now that Cruise has established proof of concept on the technology front, how long before we see proof of profit? #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

Almost half of all humans now live in cities. By 2300 that number will climb to 75%. With so much population density, how will people get around? Horace Dediu and Roman Meliska have some powerful ideas. The future of transportation in cities is smaller, lighter, quicker and smarter. There is a shift underway to new modes of transportation that they call Micromobility. It is not the end of the car. Reuters has just published a blockbuster forecast: Global automakers plan to invest $1.2 trillion in electric vehicles, batteries and supply chains between now and 2030. That is a massive, unprecedented number in the 130-year history of the auto industry. Just how big is 1.2 trillion? It is the equivalent to the GDP of Spain. It is also the same as Apple's market cap. Which companies are investing the most? Where are their investments concentrated? Is it in new vehicles, batteries, mining or something else? Author of this important report, Paul Lienert, tells us that the 2022 projection of $1.2 trillion in new investments is twice the 2021 number. What has caused the sudden spike in EV investing? Metis Engineering founder Joe Holdwarth got his start working on nuclear submarines. Today, he spends his days and nights finding ways to prevent thermal runaway events in electric cars. EV battery fires are rare. According to experts, fires occur just 5 times for every billion miles traveled. For internal combustion engine-powered vehicles, the number is 55. But when there is a thermal runaway event, the results can be catastrophic. A fire in one battery cell spreads quickly to hundreds of others. And because fires are fueled by chemicals, they are difficult to bring under control. Often firefighters can only let fires burn themselves out. Automakers, battery manufacturers and expert engineering companies worldwide are working to develop early warning systems that shut down the battery before a fire can begin. One such company is Metis Engineering based in Bristol, England. What is venting? And how do the sensors developed by Metis act as life-saving early warning systems? #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

David Welch, the highly regarded veteran Bloomberg reporter, has written a timely and important book about how Mary Barra is leading a total makeover of General Motors. Barra's mission has been to transform GM from large and cumbersome and arrogant to a company that is lean, quick and profitable. The path to a flourishing GM, Barra believes, is total commitment to electric and autonomous vehicles, the two most transformative technologies of our era. Getting there means killing sacred cows and making tough calls. Under Barra's leadership, GM exited many markets around the world, including long-standing GM outposts in Europe, Australia, India and South Africa. This has freed up capital to concentrate investments in the all-important Ultium battery platform and Cruise, the highly innovative autonomous vehicle subsidiary based in San Francisco. Will Barra's monumental efforts to put GM on a new, winning trajectory succeed? Author Welch gives success an 80% change, provided that GM can shake an apparent generational jinx that has best the automaker since the 1990s. #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

Envisics is a UK-based technology company with deep expertise in holography. So, what are holograms? Those are the three dimensional images we see in sci-fi movies that originally appeared in the Star Wars series. Envisics projects informational holograms outside of the vehicle in the line of vision, about three feet in front of the driver's eyes. Think of it as a colorful head up display in three dimensions. The single biggest advantage of holography is safety. The driver does not need to look away toward the center stack screen where he or she might seek to secure information about navigation or speed. Instead holograms render objects in the line of sight, embedded into the road and its real surroundings.. Envisic's holograms are expected to appear on Cadillac Lyriqs in late 2022 ro 2023. Founder Jamieson Christmas earned a PhD at Cambridge and is convinced that his technology will win widespread adoption simply because it is safer and more intuitive than looking at those giant touch screens that now dominate many of our vehicles from Teslas to Lucids to F-150 Lightnings. #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

GM's has ambitious plans when it comes to electric vehicles. CEO Mary Barra says the company will be selling 1 million EVs a year by 2026, surpassing Tesla. That projected 2026 number will include everything from the just-launched $100,000 all-electric Hummers to $60,000 Cadillacs to sub-$30,000 offerings co-developed with Honda. How likely is the 114 year-old company to achieve its lofty goals? Much depends on the success of the Ultium battery platform. "Before GM got too far down the road in EVs, it had to figure out how to turn a profit on EVs," says Car and Driver. So, at the heart of GM's strategy for leadership in EVs is a brand new battery architecture called the Ultium Platform. In this week's Driving With Dunne podcast I am joined by Tim Grewe, Director of Electrification at General Motors. Mr Grewe takes us inside the world of the Ultium platform to show how it is designed to give GM a decisive edge over the competition when it comes to costs, range, reliability and safety. #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

San Francisco resident Ruth Wilcox decided to buy her first pure electric vehicle in 2020. She looked at a few different brands, including Tesla, but eventually decided to purchase an Audi e-tron. What made her elect the Audi over the others? And two years later, what have been the highs and lows of ownership? What about charging? And what are some of the quality issues Audi engineers need to address? Joining the conversation is Ken Wilcox, Ruth's husband. Ken loves his gasoline-powered Audi TTs. Ken finds that electric cars are lacking when it comes to the emotional joys of driving and shifting gears in a car powered by an engine that you can feel and hear. Ruth confesses to missing her beloved Saab, too. You will really enjoy the point-counterpoint (he-said-she-said) flow of our conversation this week on the Driving With Dunne podcast. #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

In June, 2021, Ted Cannis was appointed CEO of Ford Pro, the vitally-important division focused on commercial vehicles like the Ford F-Series trucks and Transit vans. Ford sees enormous opportunity to grow this division in terms of revenues and profits in the next three years. In our conversation, Ted Cannis shares examples of how small to medium sized businesses can get a lot more efficient and profitable in a short space of time through connected car software applications. Ford is also rolling out the F-150 Lightning and E-Transiti to commercial customers in the US and European markets in 2022. This will be a gigantic test to see whether battery-powered vehicles can meet or exceed the experience now delivered by gasoline-powered vehicles. Cannis offers a pragmatic view, saying that electric vehicles will be right for some customers while others - for example companies that do a lot of towing - might prefer to stay with gasoline engines and powertrains, at least for the time being. #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

In the early 2000s, a small group of friends in Palo-Alto, California started a movement to transform the way products are designed and developed. It came to be known as Design Thinking. Early pioneers included David M. Kelley, founder of IDEO and Diego Rodriguez, one of his star team leaders. The central idea of design thinking is to center all development not around the product or service but around how human beings feel when they experience them. It may sound simple or obvious. But if the process were easy, then why do so many companies still develop mediocre products? In this episode of Driving With Dunne, Diego Rodriguez walks us through the "how" and "why" of design thinking. Mercedes and Ford are among scores of companies weaving design thinking into future product designs. If you are interested in building better products, you will love this episode. #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

What does China want? What is Xi Jinping's endgame? Elizabeth Economy, a highly-respected scholar, keynote speaker and best-selling author, has clear ideas. Her new book, The World According to China, lays out China's ambitions to become the world's pre-eminent superpower, replacing the United States. China is already hard at work to realize Xi's dream. The country projects influence globally through three kinds of power: Hard Power (military expansion in the South China Sea), Soft Power (cultural via a network of Confucian institutes) and Sharp Power (leveraging access to China's vast home market for goods and services to shape certain behavior of corporations and individuals alike). You can count on one hand the number of people in the world who know as much about batteries as Mujeeb Ijaz, In early 2020 Mujeeb took the monumental decision to found Our Next Energy (ONE), an advanced technology battery company with headquarters in Novi, Michigan. Mujeeb understood that range was a major limiting factor for customers considering a switch to electric vehicles. To reduce that purchase "friction", Mujeeb set an extraordinarily audacious goal: His company, Our Next Energy, would develop technology solutions to double the average range of electric vehicles. That means taking range to a point where cars with 700 miles of rated range would deliver 400 miles in real-world driving conditions. Mujeeb has won the confidence of several of the world's most sophisticated investors including Bill Gates' Breakthrough Ventures, BMW I Ventures and Coatue. Mujeeb and ONE look like they are in the right place at the right time as America awakens to China's global dominance in batteries and battery supply chains. In this episode we learn what inspired Mujeeb to found Our Next Energy, what the team has accomplished so far and where the company will be five years from now. #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

Gas prices are going through the roof. Shell and Chevron now command more than $6 a gallon in California. People are asking themselves: Is it time to go electric? Up until now, consumers have been hesitant. Going electric has understandably felt like a big gamble because cars are such a big ticket item. What about range? Will charging be convenient? Is the battery safe from fires? Will I be able to sell my electric vehicle in three years at a decent price? Today, thanks to a new study from JD Power, we have much more clarity on the highs and lows of owning an electric vehicle. JD Power surveyed more than 8,000 EV owners across the United States and, just weeks ago, published the 2022 US Electric Vehicle Ownership Satisfaction Study. The big takeaway from the study: The overwhelming majority of owners say they will not go back to gas-powered cars - even though the EV ownership experience has not always been smooth or easy. Why is that? This episode of the Driving With Dunne podcast reveals what owners might call the magic allure of electric vehicles. #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

In February 2022, Consumer Reports named the Mustang Mach-E the best electric car on the market, knocking Tesla from the number one position for the first time. The sporty SUV seems to be everything customers want in a Mustang: good-looking, modern - and very fast. People in America bought almost 30,000 of them in the first year, blowing past even the most optimistic projections by the team at Ford. But what most people are not aware of is that the Mach-E product development program was actually a high stakes gamble. Ford was betting the legendary Mustang name on a totally new vehicle that would be a 4-door SUV instead of a 2-door coupe, where passengers would sit up high, not in bucket seats. And, imagine this, a Mustang that was ultra quiet on acceleration. Our special guest today is Hau Thai-Tang, Executive Vice President of Industrial Platform at Ford Motor Company. In our conversation, Hau gives us an insider's view of how the Mustang Mach E grew from concept to production in less than three years. As you might imagine, there were more than a few dramatic twists and turns along the way. Also, I am sure that you will be surprised and amazed by Hau's own personal story, from escaping war-torn Vietnam in 1975 to becoming one of the auto industry's most accomplished executives. #DrivingWithDunne / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

The team at Driving With Dunne has been receiving a flood of messages and emails from lots of people in the same position: They want to buy an electric car. But there are still so many unknowns. What about range? Are batteries safe? Will I really save money versus a gasoline car? What do maintenance and service costs look like? How does charging work? This week, we gathered with two veteran Tesla owners - Blair Davey and Sharon Henry - to talk about their first-hand experiences. Blair owns a Model S. And Sharon drives a Model 3. Why did they decide to buy an electric car? Why a Tesla? What have been the highs, the lows and new learnings? What weird stuff did they need to get used to? If they met Elon Musk tomorrow, what would they ask him to improve or do differently? And - most important - would they recommend a Tesla to their best friend? Think of NIO as a Chinese company with a global DNA. The seven year old automaker founded by Chinese billionaire William Li operates from bases in Munich, London, San Jose and Shanghai. NIO differentiates itself from the competition in several important ways: On the battery front, NIO offers owners the options of fast-charging, battery swapping and even battery as a service (leasing). NIO has also developed an AI assistant named Nomi that sits on the dashboard that handles all voice commands. NIO has sold more than 150,000 premium electric vehicles since launching its first product, the ES8 all-electric SUV, in June 2017. Now, NIO is expanding into several European markets, including Norway, Denmark, Sweden and even Germany. #WinningInAsia / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

When she was nine years old, Linda Zhang got on a plane for the first time in her life and flew to America. Her father met her at the airport in Chicago and they drove three hours to Purdue University where he was a graduate student. Riding in a car - also for the very first time - taking in the bright city lights, Linda says she felt a "little bit like a princess" in a fairytale. Well, Linda's life story certainly looks like something that could be made into a movie. At just 19, she graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in electrical engineering. She has since added an MA in computer engineering and an MBA, also from Michigan. In 2018, Linda was named chief engineer of arguably Ford's most important product launch in decades - the Ford F-150 all-electric Lightning. The F-150 has been America's best-selling vehicle for 44 straight years. And the profits from the F-150 series are greater than total annual profits at Nike or McDonalds. In today's Winning in Asia conversation, Linda talks about the challenges and breakthroughs in her work as a Chief Engineer. What was the vision for the all-electric truck? Mark Schaub, Managing Partner at the global law firm King & Wood Malleson, has been advising companies operating in China for almost 30 years. So, Mr Schaub is the perfect expert to walk us through China's aggressive new rules on data. Since late 2020, Chinese regulators have been cracking down on private companies from Alibaba to Didi Chuxing to on-line education powerhouses like TAL. The focus is on data privacy and data security. In August, the powerful Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) published a new set of rules that will have a direct impact on tech companies, including smart electric cars and autonomous vehicles. What specific changes are afoot? And what adjustments will foreign data-dependent companies need to make in the coming months and years to continue operating in China? Schaub is also the author of a valuable and humorous book: The Art of Law: Chronicling Deals, Disasters, Greed, Stupidity and Occasional Success in the New China. #WinningInAsia / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

Mazda is an intriguing company -- a little bit like that iconic European brand, Volvo. Both companies make excellent design a priority. Both are relatively small but still profitable. And both enjoy an army of devoted customers. One difference, of course, is that while Volvo is now Chinese-owned (Geely), Mazda remains independent. Will Mazda be able to stay autonomous in an era of massive spending on future technologies like EVs, batteries, autonomous driving and car connectivity? Our guest on this episode of Winning in Asia, Jeffrey Guyton, President and CEO of Mazda of North American Operations, talks about the future of powertrains (EV vs. Hybrid vs Hydrogen), Mazda's distinct culture and what it takes to win in the ever-demanding Japanese market. Among his many talents, Jeff is fluent in four languages, including Japanese. And he was named to the Automotive New 2020 All-Star roster. Under Jeff's leadership. Mazda is achieving record sales in North America. Also joining the conversation this week is Ali Zamiri, VP, Business Development and Sales, Accel Robotics, a leading pioneer in new retail. Jeffrey, Ali and I are all disciples of Dr. Linda Lim, our former professor at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. Yes, you can expect some sparring of wits in our conversation. No doubt, Linda will approve. #WinningInAsia / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

In 2018, Wall Street Journal's highly-respected reporter Tim Higgins set out to write a book about the downfall of Tesla. He had good reason to think the company was in deep trouble. Early in 2018, Tesla found itself in exceptionally difficult circumstances.. Elon's vision for a revolutionary manufacturing line powered by robotos was turning into a colossal disaster. Full automation was not working. From sleeping on the factory floor to setting up tents in the parking lots as an auxiliary assembly site, CEO Elon Musk was doing everything possible to avoid total collapse of the company. He would later describe the period as "production hell" and revealed that the company was within weeks of going bankrupt. What happened next is nothing short of extraordinary. Not only did Elon and Tesla survive that near-brush with extinction, the company, just two years later, became the most valuable car company on the planet. In this episode of Winning in Asia, author Tim Higgins takes us inside the company for a first-hand look at the people, the pressures and the giant pivots that have shaped Tesla since its inception in 2004. #WinningInAsia / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

Our special guest this week on the Winning in Asia podcast is Dr Linda Lim, my corporate strategy professor at the University of Michigan and a forever mentor. Linda has a gift for presenting complex economic dynamics in a down-to-earth, folksy way. And her laughter is contagious. She and her husband Dr. Pete Gosling have hosted some of Ann Arbor's best-ever parties for former students. We would gather at their home for delicious Thai or Indoesnian food and music. I still remember all the books lining the walls, which she tells me number in the thousands. In this episode, we talk about the intensifying economic and technological rivalry between the United States and China. If she were an investor, where would she place her chips? What does she make of China's ambitions to be the world dominator in next-generation technologies? And is getting an MBA today still worth the investment? Born and raised in Singapore, Dr Lim was educated at Cambridge and Yale and then earned her PhD from the University of Michigan. #WinningInAsia / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

In The Scientist and The Spy, Mara Hvistendahl recounts the story of how Robert Mo, a Chinese national with two PhDs and a home in Florida, got into trouble with the FBI. Hoping to find a way to earn more income for his young family, Mr Mo takes a job with DBN, a powerhouse seed producer based in Beijing. Before long, he finds himself conducting recon missions in the cornfields of Iowa. The Economist says her compelling account reads "in part like a spy thriller, replete with car chases, phone-tapping and aerial surveillance as agents track the shovel-carrying suspects across America." The larger question Ms Hvistendahl raises: When does economic espionage and intellectual property theft become a matter of national security? And what to do about it? #WinningInAsia / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

In the summer of 2020, Simon Moores delivered a wake-up call to the US Senate: China is building one mega battery factory every week. The United States is building at a pace of just three per year. By the end of the first quarter of 2021, there were a total of 200 mega battery factories in the pipeline globally. Of this total, China accounted for 75%. Europe had 10%, and the US totalled just 5%. In this episode of the Winning in Asia podcast, Simon Moores delivers an expert view of the race for global supremacy in batteries for electric vehicles. Today, China, Korea and Japan utterly dominate battery production and the all-important supply chains that feed into battery making. Asian battery makers - CATL, BYD, LG Chem, SK Innovation, Samsung SDI and Panasonic - are the clear-cut industry leaders. Europe and the US are playing catch up. Is it too late? Or are we still in the early days of the battery revolution? #WinningInAsia / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

Jack Cheng, co-founder at NIO and now CEO of MIH Alliance Foxconn, reveals how Foxconn will re-write the rules for EV manufacturing. In early 2021, Foxconn sent a tremor through automotive boardrooms across the world when it announced plans to enter the electric vehicle industry. Since then, MIH Alliance Foxconn has established new partnerships with several high profile companies including, Stellantis, Microsoft, Nvidia, Bosch, BYTON, Geely and Fisker. The vision is to create an open-source platform for EVs that will dramatically reduce costs and speed up time to market. The open-source approach also makes it possible for companies with no prior automotive experience to enter the arena. On June 1st, Foxconn announced a new partnership with PTT (Thailand) to build electric vehicles in Southeast Asia. Jack will also talk about his expansive guitar collection and how he came to love American Rock & Roll. #WinningInAsia / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

Being a foreign reporter in China used to be a wide-open and exciting adventure. No more. Today, foreign journalists are constantly monitored, their travel is limited and fewer Chinese people feel free to speak with them. CNBC Beijing Bureau Chief Eunice Yoon is one of only a handful of American reporters still operating in Beijing earlier this decade. Many others have had to leave China for reasons of personal security or because their visas were not renewed. Since arriving in China earlier this decade, Ms Yoon has traveled to scores of cities and interviewed hundreds of executives, government officials and ordinary people on the street. In this episode, we find out who was Ms Yoon's single favorite interviewee and why. Ms Yoon also talks about how escalating US-China tensions are impacting foreign media operating in China. We also learn from Eunice what happened when she walked this Shanghai Auto Show in April with two young guns - diehard Tesla owners. #WinningInAsia / #ZozoGo https://twitter.com/Dunne_ZoZoGo https://www.instagram.com/zo.zo.go/?hl=en https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dunne-a696901a/…

But as Chairman Mao liked to say: "The road ahead is bright but full of twists and turns, setbacks and adversities." Kevin shares the story of what he calls the "Theranos of China's Chip Industry" - how three clever con artists with zero experience in chips crafted a deal that resulted in $2 billion gone sideways. Kevin also talks about how Tesla might contribute to China's chip drive by doing original engineering for autonomous technologies inside China, thereby sidestepping tough US technology export controls.
