The property at 7658 Union Hill Road, near Avery Elementary, may now be available at a reduced price. County leaders, including Commissioners Steve West and Richard Weatherby, are exploring purchasing the land for a future park, though development would take years. The project covers 3.595 miles of roads, costing $941,199.89, with an additional 0.405 miles possible if funds allow. Funded by Local Maintenance and Improvement Grants and SPLOST, work includes Great Sky Parkway, Fountain Oak Way, and Laurel Canyon Parkway. Cherokee County also approved a $3.36 million contract for resurfacing 17 miles countywide, including Towne Lake Hills East. Projects are set to finish by September, avoiding school traffic disruptions. STORY 2: Nelson Buys 4 Acres From Cherokee for Public Works Building The city of Nelson will build a new public works facility on a four-acre parcel purchased from Cherokee County for $120,000. Approved by the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners on April 15, the sale proceeds will go to the county fire department’s 2024 SPLOST budget. Nelson plans to use the site for housing sanitation trucks and equipment. The remaining six acres of the property will host a future fire station, replacing the unstaffed Fire Station 26, to better serve northern Cherokee County. STORY 3: Judge says Trump officials likely in contempt over deportations A federal judge, James Boasberg, found sufficient evidence to hold the Trump administration in criminal contempt for deporting accused Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador on March 15, defying his verbal order to halt the flights. Boasberg cited "willful disregard" and "bad faith" by officials but has not yet named individuals for prosecution, giving the administration a chance to comply by allowing detainees to seek U.S. judicial review. The deportations, tied to Trump invoking the Alien Enemies Act, sparked legal battles over presidential authority and due process, with the Supreme Court later overturning Boasberg’s order pausing the removals. Break: STORY 4: Two to Serve 25 Years in Prison for Cherokee County Home Invasion Kaiden Pridgen, 19, and Cibias Vieira, 23, pled guilty to charges from a 2022 Cherokee County home invasion and attempted armed robbery, receiving 35-year sentences with 25 years in prison. The masked defendants, armed with a pistol, assaulted and held victims at gunpoint while searching for cash. Evidence from surveillance, geofence data, and social media linked them to the crime. Pridgen, 16 at the time, was tried as an adult due to the crime's severity. A third accomplice, David Kelley, who acted as the driver, received a 20-year sentence with five years in prison. The case highlights the lasting trauma of home invasions. Deputies responded to the scene around 10:22 p.m., where Daniel, the boyfriend of the homeowner, was present alongside Reid, an acquaintance of both. A firearm was recovered at the scene. STORY 3: DeJoy Delivers Exit Notice to USPS After Five Years Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announced plans to step down after five years leading the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). The USPS Board of Governors will begin searching for his successor. DeJoy, whose tenure was marked by controversy, implemented modernization efforts to cut costs by $4 billion annually and increase revenue by $5 billion. Despite these changes, USPS expects a $6.9 billion net loss in fiscal year 2025. Four schools excelled in both areas, earning spots on the Literacy and Math Leaders lists. Woods presented banners during a visit to Little River Elementary, commending principals, teachers, and staff for their students' achievements. Recognized schools include Avery Elementary, Creekland Middle, and Woodstock Middle, among others, for growth and achievement in reading and math. With a degree from UGA and extensive leadership training, Tippens has earned numerous accolades, including Georgia Trend’s 40 Under 40. COED Chairman Marshall Day praised Tippens’ dedication, and Tippens expressed excitement about leading COED’s strategic vision. He begins his new role on Feb. 12.
