Episode 49: Improving the UK’s Approach to Technology Development in Conversation with… RWE & LM Wind In the past couple of months, we have seen some big news in the UK offshore wind sector focused on our approach to the industrialisation of offshore wind technology. In April, we had the publication of the much anticipated Industrial Growth Plan for offshore wind, which sets out a pathway to grow the offshore wind supply chain to accelerate and de-risk delivery, as well as develop market share and technology leadership for the UK. Then just a few weeks ago, we were very proud to announce an £85.6m investment from our colleagues at UKRI to upgrade and expand our testing facilities at our National Renewable Energy Centre in Blyth. This game-changing development will future proof the UK’s capability to de-risk turbine technology and incentivise a strong UK presence across all areas of offshore renewable energy. The upgraded facilities will be able to test blades of up to 150m and drivetrains up to 23MW. And with that, the theme of this episode of the ReEnergise podcast is around unlocking the future of technology development and industrialisation in offshore wind. Our Director of Technology Development, Tony Quinn, was joined by Danielle Lane, RWE's Director of Development for UK and Ireland, and Andrew Bellamy, Managing Director at LM Wind Power UK. Discussions included: 1) How do we prioritise our objectives for offshore wind? 2) Have we underestimated the challenge of simultaneously scaling both the technology and production capacity? 3) Are we suffering the consequences of a disproportionate allocation of risk and is there a more equitable solution? 4) How do we take a more robust approach to technology confidence, gained through testing and validation and shared knowledge to enhance the whole industry? 5) How does the UK’s approach stands up against other markets, and what are some of the lessons we can take? 262291…

For having an average lifespan of 20-25 years, many of the world's wind turbines installed in the nineties and early noughties are now reaching the end of their life cycle. This raises the question, what happens to them when they stop working? Whilst they are excellent producers of green energy, challenges arise when it is time for their decommissioning as the size and durable material used during manufacturing are difficult to recycle and reuse. Despite around 80-85% of the weight of an offshore wind turbine being recyclable, turbine blades still represent a significant challenge to the environment that the industry is working hard to find a solution for. In this episode, we hear from experts who are working on projects that look to improve best practices and procedures that are currently in place to ensure these green energy producers remain as green in their end of life. • Michael Forbes, Refurbishment Manager, Renewable Parts • Dr Anne Velenturf, Research Impact Fellow in Circular Economy & Sustainable Offshore Wind Development at the University of Leeds • Steve Ross, Regional Partnership Manager, ORE Catapult • Lorna Bennet, Project Engineer, ORE Catapult…

Planning operations and maintenance activity is a challenging task. It can be difficult to predict if sea conditions will allow turbine technician transfer via crew transfer vessels (CTVs) to take place, and often marine operators have a limited source of information for making this decision. This is where the SPOWTT project comes in. SPOWTT – which stands for Safety and Productivity of Offshore Wind Technician Transit - provides a forecasting and monitoring tool to help match future assets to the environmental conditions. The project took a novel approach by using digital technology to create a decision-making tool that allows marine coordinators to make a more informed decision regarding crew transfers. With the UK now well underway in working towards net-zero by 2050, the way we produce, use and store energy is changing. Our sources of power, heating and transport must decarbonise if we are to achieve the net-zero targets outlined by the Committee on Climate Change, but current methods of offshore renewable energy production cannot achieve this alone. This is where Green Hydrogen comes in. In the latest Re-Energise podcast episode, want to dive head-first into the world of hydrogen to try and understand its place in the ever evolving offshore renewable energy sector. Our experts scope out the future possibilities, reveal key research from ORE Catapult on hydrogen-offshore wind integration and introduce new ground-breaking community projects being launched this year. In this episode, we’re focussing upon the truly Mammoth Tasks that are involved in keeping the UK’s offshore wind farms going. We’re talking about inspecting, maintaining and repairing thousands of miles of subsea cables, millions of super-sized bolts and thousands of blades suspended above the ocean waves. This is heavy manual work, often undertaken in extreme conditions - fraught with risks, delays and heavy costs. Peter Andrews founded EchoBolt in 2019 after many years managing offshore wind sites for E.ON, most recently the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm. EchoBolt provides a range of consultancy and engineering integrity services to the wind industry, including advanced inspection and condition monitoring techniques and data insights that enable optimum installation and maintenance decisions to increase production and reduce costs.
