There’s only so much you can do in a week – or, according to Oliver Burkeman, in the roughly 4,000 weeks the average human lives. Oliver is a journalist and author of the books Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals, Meditations for Mortals, and the newsletter “The Imperfectionist.” Chris and Oliver discuss the paradox of why change can only occur once we accept that we might not be able to change. Oliver also shares how life’s mishaps can become our most treasured memories and why sharing your imperfections is an act of generosity. Sam Pay (Song by Song podcast) and Hannah Wales (missflicks.com) return to Flixwatcher to review Sam’s choice The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023) is a short film based on a short story collection by Roald Dahl directed by Wes Anderson. It is the first in a four-part series of shorts adapted from Dahl’s short stories collection and includes The Swan, The Rat Catcher and Poison. This is the second time Wes Anderson has adapted Roald Dahl and once again brings his trademark style to Dahl’s much loved words. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar plus three more features a rotating cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch as Henry Sugar, Max Engelman, and Harry Pope, Ralph Fiennes as Roald Dahl, the Policeman, and the Rat Man, Dev Patel as Dr. Chatterjee, John Winston, and Timber Woods, Ben Kingsley as Imdad Khan, the Dealer, and Dr. Ganderbai, Richard Ayoade as Dr. Marshall, the Great Yogi, and the Editor/Reporter and Rupert Friend as Peter Watson/Narrator and Claud. Scores for the four short films were mixed, general consensus was that The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar was the strongest of the four. With a combined runtime of less than 90 minutes, much shorter than most cinema releases, it still comes recommended with an overall score of 3.74. Rich and T.A Shelano from The Middle-aged Bodcast join Flixwatcher to review Rich’s choice The Matrix. The Matrix (1999) is the genre blending sci-fi action film written and directed by Lilly and Lana Wachowski. Set in dystopian future where humans have been dominated by AI and trapped inside a simulated reality called the ‘Matrix’. In the year 1999, Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) is a computer hacker who also goes by the name Neo, his online activity alerts both fellow hackers and Agents, notably Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving). He meets with Trinity (Carrie-Ann Moss) who explains that Morpheus (Laurence Fishbourne) believes him to be the “One” who will help them break free from the Matrix. It is impossible to avoid the influence The Matrix had on filmmaking and popular culture. The “bullet time’ visual effect and wire work was highly influential on action films. Its terms around red pill / blue pill philosophy have been reused and even adopted by the alt-right. Recommendability scores for The Matrix were very high, losing points only on the small screen and it scores 4.53 overall. Liz Slade and Katie (Filmhounds Magazine and podcast) Hogan join Flixwatcher to review Liz’s choice Don’t Worry Darling. Don’t Worry Darling (2022) is a psychological thriller drama directed by Olivia (Booksmart) Wilde written by Katie (Booksmart) Silberman. Florence Pugh stars as Alice with Harry Styles as her husband Jack who live in an idyllic 1950s company town. In the day the men go to work and the wives, including Olivia Wilde as Bunny, Alice's neighbor and best friend and Gemma Chan as Shelley, are left to clean, shop and cook for their hardworking husbands. Strange things start happening to Alice as she begins to question her surroundings and the purpose of Victory. The behind the scenes of Don’t Worry Darling is perhaps more exciting than the actual film, from the casting issues to the on set affair and the chaotic press tour it arrived to screens bringing lots of drama. The film failed to live up to its premise and what we got was a shiny but confusing hot mess. Despite its flaws Flixwatcher and guests would still recommend, mainly due to Florence Pugh’s performance and Don’t Worry Darling scores 3.25 overall. Fran and Babs from Over/underrated podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Fran’s choice Chef. Chef (2014) is a comedy drama road trip film, written, directed and starring Jon (Iron Man) Favreau. Also starring Sofía Vergara, John Leguizamo, Scarlett Johansson, Oliver Platt, Bobby Cannavale, Amy Sedaris, Emjay Anthony, and Dustin Hoffman, along with Robert Downey Jr. Miami Chef Carl Casper is the head chef at a popular LA restaurant but clashes with the restaurant owner over the menu. When he receives a negative food review from a prestigious food critic and blogger Ramsey Michel he unintentionally starts a Twitter (hello 2014!) spat. After a failed attempt to serve innovative cuisine to Michel and redeem his status, Casper quits and decides to take his food on the road in a food truck and drag his son along for the ride. Chef is a charming and easy going film, even if it is occasionally a vehicle for Favreau’s ego. If you enjoy food and hold nostalgia for a time when Twitter was a fun social media platform then Chef is the film for you. Chef scores highly across all categories apart from repeat viewing to give an overall rating of 3.70. One night Rob is attacked and beaten, at the same time his pig is stolen. Rob enlists the help of Amir to track down his pig and help him gain information he needs. Pig is a revenge film but not the type you might expect. Anyone expecting a John Wick/Taken approach will probably be disappointed. It is meditative look at life and food and the choices we make. Dr. Andrew Johnstone and Jason Heat from Seemingly Unrelated podcast return to Flixwatcher to review Andrew’s choice Ariana Grande: Excuse Me, I Love You. Ariana Grande: Excuse Me, I Love You (2020) is a Netflix documentary that follows the Grammy-winning, multi-platinum singer-songwriter around the globe on her sold out 2019 Sweetener World Tour. To be filed under one for the fans only. There is very little insightful footage to be found here in the 1 hour 37 minutes. It does feature 25 songs performed by Ariana Grande so if that is something you’d like to watch then this is for you. There are music films (Rocketman) and documentaries (Amy) that transcend genres and interest to reach a wide audience, this is not one of them. On vacation she meets Jack (Jeremy Northam) who under the guise of a holiday romance tries to kill Angela. She manages to escape but quickly discovers her identity has been erased online. The Net is a film that shows us the thrills of ordering pizza online and the indestructible floppy disk. Time has not been kind to films about ‘the internet’ from the 1990s and The Net is no exception. There is no reason for this film to be two hours but it is! Hannah Wales (missflicks.com) and Sam Pay (Song by Song podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Hannah’s choice Back to Black. Back to Black (2024) is a biographical film based on the life of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse. Directed by Sam (Nowhere Boy) Taylor-Johnson it stars Marisa Abela as Amy, Jack O'Connell as Blake Fielder-Civil, Eddie Marsan as Mitch Winehouse and Lesley Manville as Cynthia Levy. Back to Black follows the standard music biopic structure and starts with Amy’s love of singing in her home with her dad Mitch and grandmother Cynthia. She is quickly discovered and releases her debut album Frank. Things start going downhill when Amy meets Blake, the love of her life who also happens to be a bad influence on her. Back to Black has been heavily criticised for its representation of Mitch and Blake and failure to show Amy as anything other than a sad lonely addict. Recommendability scores reflected this and together with low scores across the other categories Back to Black scores 2.64 overall. Watch Asif Kapadia’s documentary Amy instead.
