In this episode, we talk about why dating now can be easier, more authentic, and more fulfilling than ever—and how shifting your perspective can change everything. Episode Highlights: Why dating now can feel easier and more authentic than ever The freedom that comes from wanting—not needing—a partner How showing up as your true self changes who you attract Why self-acceptance is magnetic How trusting yourself shapes every choice you make in love Episode Breakdown: 00:00 Dating Over 50: Why It’s the Best Time for Love 00:53 Meet Hilary 01:47 Midlife Dating Truths 02:07 Reason 1: Maturity & Clarity 03:44 Reason 2: Desire, Not Need 05:08 Reason 3: Authentic Self 07:06 Reason 4: Confidence & Magnetism 08:52 Reason 5: Self-Trust & Boundaries 10:28 Why It’s Never Too Late for Love Dating now isn’t about chasing chemistry or proving your worth—it’s about finding a true, equal partnership that adds to your already beautiful life. ✨ I’m Hilary Silver, LCSW, former psychotherapist turned master coach and founder of Ready for Love. Tamarindo is delighted to welcome back Dr. Manuel Pastor who directs the Equity Research Institute at USC. His research is generally focused on issues of the economic, environmental and social conditions facing low-income urban communities – and the social movements seeking to change those realities. In recognition of his impactful work, in 2024, Dr. Pastor was named by the Los Angeles Times as one of the region’s most significant civic leaders in their inaugural series, L.A. Influential. Today, we’re reflecting on the impact of the ICE raids, the truth about immigrants in Los Angeles, and why this Administration is so obsessed with us. We also talk about how it is going to take all of us to stay involved as we support the organizations and movements that are determined to push back. Dr. Pastor also gave us some suggested organizations for our listeners to follow and consider donating to, including: CHIRLA:https://www.chirla.org/get-involved/donate-support/ Community Coalition: https://action.cocosouthla.org/donate LAANE: https://laane.org/ Million Voters Project: https://millionvotersproject.org/ California Calls: https://www.cacalls.org/ Tamarindo is a lighthearted show hosted by Brenda Gonzalez and Delsy Sandoval talking about politics, culture, and self-development. We are about to enter “Latino Heritage Month”, and we know that the continued onslaught on our communities casts a shadow on our celebrations. This is why we invited Dr. David Hayes-Bautista to remind us about our longstanding legacy and POWER in this country. Dr. Hayes-Bautista is a professor of medicine and director of the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at the School of Medicine, UCLA. Beyond that, he is also the author of “El Cinco de Mayo: An American Tradition” where he tells the fascinating story about how the US-based celebration is about much more than commemorating the battle of Puebla. We also dive into new research that underscores what we have always known, this country and especially this state, is powerful because of Latinos, not in spite of us. Delsy is back for this powerful conversation about how to accept our aging and changing bodies. We discuss how we’re embracing or attempting to embrace how we’re changing in our bodies, how cultural expectations on Latinas have impacted our perspectives, and how notions of what is “healthy” has evolved. Next, we speak to Dalina Soto, also known as “Your Latina Nutritionist” across social media where she helps folks heal their relationship with food. Dalina and I have an insightful conversation about how white supremacy shows up in our notions of health and the ways that she’s using her CHULA method to empower folks to make food choices that feel good for our bodies and cultures. Dalina’s new book The Latina Anti-Diet: A Dietitian’s Guide to Authentic Health That Celebrates Culture And Full-Flavor Living, is out now. 90s Nostalgia with Artivist Julio Salgado Today’s episode is a two-part conversation with artist and activist Julio Salgado. Viewers can see Julio’s vibrant art work at immigrant rights rallies, the LA Times, or promoting one of LA’s greatest dance nights, Cumbiaton. Julio’s status as an undocumented, queer artivist has fueled the contents of his visual art, which depict key individuals and moments of the migrant rights movement. Recorded at the end of a long week, these two elder millennials, Brenda and Julio, from the class of 2001, revisit some of the female vocalists of the '90s who shaped Jullio’s early experiences living in the US. Through this chat, we’ll take you on a nostalgic journey through the sounds of an era when women were taking center stage fronting bands in the 90s and into the early 2000s; and we’ll draw some parallels to some of the leading women in music today. I asked Julio to pick five songs for us to discuss and you can hear what songs we reference through this playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/02bVhKS9ihFMiGIJGEswUc?si=c8b2e64c809c43ff We had such a fun time approaching our convo like some of our favorite podcasts, Las Cultureistas and Vibe Check, we completely lost track of time. This episode of Tamarindo is a partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC), an organization dedicated to making a cultural home for the diverse identities that shape the community. October 3rd marked Latina Equal Pay day, a day of action that calls attention to the Latina wage gap. Our friends at the NHCC invited Tamarindo to lead a conversation about how we can raise the pay for Latinas. We had a fantastic panel of Latina changemakers: Melanie Fontes Rainer who serves as the Director of the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services where she leads the Department’s enforcement of federal civil rights and privacy laws and directs related policy and strategic initiatives. Stephanie Rodriguez who is the Secretary for the New Mexico Higher Education Department. Pola Lopez, a New Mexico-born, self-taught artist with a rich background in the Southwestern cultural heritage. She has been a prominent figure in the New Mexico art scene. Even though October 3rd is behind us, the work to bring pay equity for Latinas is ongoing. This powerful conversation shows some of the innovative ways that Latinas are leading the way for pay equity. Follow these resources to learn more: Equal Pay Today – A campaign aimed at closing the wage gap, offering resources on how to advocate for change, with a focus on Latina Equal Pay Day. (Learn more at EqualPayDay.org) Justice for Migrant Women (Founded by Friend of the pod, Monica Ramirez) – An organization dedicated to protecting and supporting Latina and immigrant women in the workforce. This org also pushed for better data around the Latina Wage gap to capture part-time workers, rural workers, and others that are often marginalized. National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) – They provide critical research and advocacy tools to help fight for wage equality, with a focus on women of color. Lastly, you can call your representatives and ask that they support to bills that could make a difference: The Paycheck Fairness Act (Makes available info around pay discrimination; trains women and girls how to negotiate; conducts studies on how to end pay discrimination) and The BE HEARD Act which extends protections against harassment Tamarindo is a lighthearted show hosted by Brenda Gonzalez and Delsy Sandoval talking about politics, culture, and self-development. This is a jam packed episode with inspiring storytellers through food, film, and fiction. We start with a panel chat with Hugo Gamino and Claudia Restrepo. Hugo is a chef and writer dedicated to sharing the untold stories behind the recipes that have shaped his life and career. His writing is fostering understanding, and bringing to life an empathetic viewpoint of diversity while challenging toxic masculinity. Claudia is an LA-based writer, director, and actor who is passionate about minority and queer representation, both in front and behind the camera. She recently executive produced and starred in the film “Peak Season” a refreshing romantic comedy that’s free from the typical tropes of its genre. See it now on Prime. Next up, we have Paola Mendoza, who you may know as the artist director and co-founder of the 2017 Women’s March. She’s directed many projects, including the beautiful film “Entre Nos”, the semi-autobiographical story based on Paola’s mother’s arrival to the US from Colombia. Paola joins us to speak about her latest book, SOLIS, which she co-wrote with Abby Sher and is a companion to their first book, Sanctuary. Especially in light of candidate Trump's vile depiction of immigration during the debate, we need works of art like SOLIS to remind us that the dystopian world in the story is not too far off where we can be headed if he is reelected. Many of us have encountered work situations that don’t always feel inclusive, safe, or where we can be our authentic selves. It can at times feel like we don’t have the power to make a difference where we work. The truth is, with the right tools, resources, and support, there can be ways to start to make a positive change. On this episode, we speak to Linet Mera, Ph.D., the Co-Executive Director of Calico Culture Strategies, where she leverages both first-hand experience and data-backed methods to build strategies and tools for organizations to build more inclusive workplaces. We also speak to Annette Angus, Ph.D., a microbiologist by training and a social activist by heart, who is passionate about building the type of work places where all people can thrive. Dr. Angus manages a team of scientists at The Clorox Company. Together, our panel tackles some listener submitted work situations and gives advice on how we can all play a role in building positive work cultures. We also explore when it might be time to tap into outside experts, such as Calico Culture Strategies. On this episode of Tamarindo, we are joined by Alejandra Campoverdi, the author of the new memoir, First-Gen. Alejandra Campoverdi's life reads like a series of impressive accolades, but she asks us to look underneath the accolades she describes as the often unacknowledged tolls of being a trailblazer. Some of these trailblazer tolls include “Invisible Inheritances,” “Bicultural Balancing Act,” and “Breakaway Guilt. In our conversation, she expands on these tolls and reminds us that while she doesn't have all the answers, we can’t heal and learn from what we cannot name and just as important, that we are not alone. Brenda and Ana Sheila will be back with a new episode next week but this week, enjoy an episode Ana Sheila recorded with the hosts of Spilling La Sopa podcast. Spilling la Sopa hosts Wendy and Rosie take you through conversations about surviving their early 30s, the struggles of growing up between two cultures, familia, and healing through humor. In this conversation, Wendy, Rosie and I talk all about stepping out of your comfort zone - what it is, why to do it, how to do it, the struggle, and of course, the rewards. We hope you walk away with a little more courage to be just a little more bold, a little more atrevida. More about Spilling la Sopa Podcast. "Spilling La Sopa is a Spanglish podcast where Dr. Wendy Herrera, a clinical and forensic psychologist, and her amiga, Rosie Ortiz, an I/O psychologist, discuss various mental wellness topics in the Latinx community como intergenerational trauma, the struggles of growing up between two cultures, and navigating dynamics in the familia. Rosie and Dr. Wendy use personal stories and acknowledge humor as a primary coping skill that allows for healing. The name Spilling La Sopa is meant to combine the feeling of "spilling the tea" with some good chisme, and of having a conversation without filter even if it's messy, "sin pelos en la lengua." On this episode we focus on art as a tool for activism. Our artivists guests show us how identity and place influences their work, their critique of the confines of creatives spaces of the past, and how they are each working to make creatives of color have greater opportunities, mentorship, and liberty to create. Before that, we talk about Latina Equal Pay Day and the Latina wealth gap. We speak to Julio Salgado, the co-founder of DreamersAdrift and the Migrant Storytelling Manager for The Center for Cultural Power. His status as an undocumented, queer artivist has fueled the contents of his visual art, which depict key individuals and moments of the DREAM Act and the migrant rights movement. Undocumented students, organizers and allies across the country have used Salgado’s artwork to call attention to the migrant rights movement. His work has been displayed at the Oakland Museum, SFMOMA and Smithsonian. On this re-play of Tamarindo, we speak to Carmen Rita Wong about her memoir, “Why Didn’t You Tell Me?”. She is a former CNBC television host and the founder and CEO of Malecon Productions, LLC, where she develops female-focused media and entertainment. Her memoir is now available on paperback and it’s a fantastic read! Through our conversation that centers around her memoir, we talk about themes present in many of our family stories, from racism to cultural erasure and the role of family secrets. This week, we are revisiting our Tamarindo favorite! This first aired fall 2019, so you’ll hear us talk about the Democratic debates...ah...remember when the only pandemic we had to worry about was Tr*mp? We learn why stress is not ALL bad but why it’s also more harmful than we think. We recognize that many of the stressors BIPOC folks face, like financial stress or discrimination, are not ones we can easily change without policy changes. That said, there are a few things we can do to start changing our relationship with stress like changing our mindset and discovering our #energychupacabras and what to do about them. We include a technique used by the stress management company that Ana Sheila co-founded, @Baskandbeing. Speaking of stress, I want to invite you to a fantastic retreat to Puebla Mexico! This is happening February 15 - 19, 2024 and I am co-hosting this with Delsy Sandoval, the creator of the Ocu-pasion podcast. We are calling this Encuentro: A creative retreat for podcasters and/or cultural creators. Right now, we are accepting applications of interest for folks that would like to be a part of this transformative creative retreat. This week on the pod, we're revisiting our talk with Dr. Manuel Pastor about how we can build a better economy centered on people, equity, and mutuality. Dr. Pastor talks to us about his book, “Solidarity Economics:Why Mutuality and Movements Matter” which he co-authored with Dr. Chris Benner. Here is what Angela Glover Blackwell, Founder of PolicyLink, has to say about this book. “In this powerful blueprint for an equitable future, Manuel Pastor and Chris Benner provide a bold critique of conventional wisdom about who owns the economy. They challenge us to radically imagine how we can design OUR economy to be fully inclusive and guided by the principles of mutuality and solidarity, ensuring that we put people first.” Dr. Pastor ‘s research generally focuses on issues of the economic, environmental and social conditions facing low-income urban communities – and the social movements seeking to change those realities. To kick off Immigrant Heritage Month, Brend and Ana Sheila speak to two immigrant leaders that are working to build a more inclusive community. First, we speak to Saadia Khan, a storyteller, human rights activist, and social entrepreneur. She is the founder and host of the award-winning podcast and digital platform, Immigrantly, which challenges simplistic narratives around the immigrant experience. Saadia is also the co-producer and co-host of the Invisible Hate podcast, an ethical true crime podcast. Saadia has worked with organizations like Human Rights First, UN Women, and other UN entities, advocating for women's rights and justice. Her passion for storytelling extends to her written work, as she contributes to publications like Yes! Magazine , the Brown Girl Magazine , the Globe Post & Medium . Next, we speak to Leydy Rangel, Communications Director at UFW Foundation, a non-profit that empowers and advocates for immigrants and farm workers. Leydy moved to the U.S. in 2004, grew up as an undocumented immigrant and has been protected from deportation as a DACA recipient since 2013. By utilizing strategic communications, she passionately advocates for both worker’s rights and pro- immigrant federal policies, while incorporating her personal experience as an undocumented person into her work. In 2021, she and five other DACA recipients met with President Biden in the Oval Office to discuss immigration.
