×Professional mountain bike coach Lindsey Richter is best known as the enthusiastic and inspiring front woman for Ladies AllRide , a company known for empowering thousands of women across the country through the simple act of biking. We originally asked Lindsey to be part of the Roam Rydes Podcast to talk about her career as a successful international mountain bike coach....and then Gracie went missing. On a warm July 4th evening in Jackson Hole Wyoming, Lindsey's world was turned upside down. Her best friend, a blue nosed pit bull rescue named Gracie, had vanished sometime during a fireworks show. What followed was an epic weeklong journey in the Wyoming wilderness, tens of thousands of would-be rescuers via social media, and an entire mountain community hell-bent on finding Gracie. This is a story of hardship, the agonizing loss of a cherished friend, and the power of the community and oneself to beat the incredible odds in finding what matters most. Roam Rydes Podcast | Episodes RSS On a morning back in February, Emily Haggans' neighbor pulled her out of a trance. She was standing in a parking lot, unaware of how long she had been there. This was the beginning of Emily's new normal. On our episode Rehab.Recover.Repeat. we get to know one of the most inspiring fighters i've ever come across. Emily's life could easily be the inspiration for a Hollywood script; full of hope and hardships and everything in-between. And despite it all, or perhaps because of it, there's been a passion that has continued to see Emily through: a love of bikes and an unwavering appreciation for the little things in life. Punneh was touched and inspired by a high school scholarship opportunity that led to her love of the outdoors, and now she has dedicated her career to paying it forward to the next generation of adventurers. Roam Rydes Podcast | Episodes RSS Brooklyn Bell shreds. Tacky Pacific Northwest dirt, fresh floaty powder, and I'm sure she'd rip on a surfboard too if the ocean in Washington wasn't so dang cold. Brooklyn is the kind of young woman I would want my little girls to grow up to be like (if I had any). She's got grit and determination , an insatiable desire to explore outside, artistic talent, and a work ethic that's hard to come by with Generation Z'ers. Her megawatt smile is impossible to ignore and she's got a personality to go with it. In the cycling communities I've dabbled in across the US, women like Brooklyn are not unusual - powerful and playful female athletes are sprinkled throughout community groups, bike shops, and yes, even races. But Brooklyn, if you haven't noticed, doesn't outwardly fit the standard cyclist mold - she's black...and black people, not to mention black women, are as Brooklyn puts it, "like seeing a little black unicorn" when it comes to meeting cyclists of color out on the trails. In this episode, and in episodes to come, we are exploring race, culture, and community with cyclists like Brooklyn as part of our Minority Report series. Our hope? To shine light on inspiring women who are being the change they want to see in the world.…
Getting paid to travel and ride bikes seems like some sort of aspirational dream job for a select crew of outrageously adventurous and ridiculously athletic folks that would be featured in Outside Magazine... but, there is a little known secret amongst the people who actually do get paid to travel and ride bikes - that there is no secret formula to landing the job. It's pretty simple: Love the outdoors Be genuine Work hard Like people Be flexible Make smart choices Be a tour guide In this episode of the Roam Rydes Podcast, we meet two ladies who have had successful careers as bicycle tour guides and they are sharing with us what YOU need to know to join them. Has this episode got you stoked? Check out the Be A Better Guide Project to study up on free guide training from the experts. Project Director Kelsey Tonner is a guide himself (and a damn good one, even if he is Canadian) and gives genuine and practical tips, tricks, and advice learned in the field. We are lucky to count Kelsey amongst our friends and fans and are thrilled with the opportunity to share all the awesome he brings to the world of adventure travel. Thanks for the hard work Kelsey! Have more questions for Terrin or Kate? Want to tell them how great they are? We just ask you don't bombard them with, "Hey can you get me hired?" inquires - we can skip that step and just tell you to check out their employers websites! Roam Rydes Podcast | Episodes RSS I first met Meg Valliant almost exactly a year ago. I had several short interactions with her over the course of a three day biking camp in the Arizona desert . . . she was mountain biking, I was road cycling. . . we shared loud evenings of bliss with 35 other women under the night sky next to a camp fire over a few bottles of fireball and whiskey (although I don't remember seeing Meg drink...mostly because I don't remember much), we gleefully sang fairly out-of-tune pop ballads and rock classics late into the last night together. It was epic. Meg catching some air. Click here for The Sisterhood of Shred link! Click here for the Sweetlines mountain bike coaching link! And then I saw Meg jump. Mind blown. I had never seen a woman go over a jump and actually catch air before. And not just the 2 inches of wheel clearance that feels like you are Evel Knievel defying death and gravity just to land a quarter second later freaked out and breathless (anyone? anyone?) ... Meg SOARED effortlessly around a pump track and boosted off a kicker with swagger and confidence. I needed to learn how to do that! Fastforward. In June I got to actually hit the trail with Meg and was not only impressed by her jumping, but by how effortlessly she handled the group dynamics of a very wide spectrum of rider ability levels. Meg was kind enough to offer me a private jumping lesson. Despite Meg's incredibly patient coaching...It was frustrating. My wheels seemed glued to the dirt and I awkwardly bobbled and bounced around the park. Further demonstrating how awesome Meg is, she moved me from one frustrating task into other more manageable tasks and then made some suggestions for what I could practice with my bike off the jumps so that next time I would find more success. It worked. Two months later I caught up with Meg and Kat Sweet and, after a morning of skills clinics, I found myself popping off the lip of a jump with a teeny bit of air, then casing it, then knuckling the landing with my rear wheel, and then... I FLEW OVER THIS FRIGGIN JUMP LIKE A BEAUTIFUL GOLDEN EAGLE! I had never felt so happy and accomplished in my life. I let out a whoop of joy followed by another whoop from Meg and then a bunch of whoops from everyone. It was epic and things clicked and I absolutely wouldn't have done it without Meg and the Sweetlines crew. Meg is so impressive on so many levels (biking, jumping, coaching, parenting, etc. etc. etc.). She is passionate and kind. She is always the first to ask if you need help and the last to leave... she's the kind of person everyone needs in their life. Meg inspires me and so many people who are lucky enough to know her...I am really grateful for this opportunity to share her story.…
Roam Rydes Podcast | Episodes RSS Some people dream of epic travels around the world with exciting and harrowing adventures along the way. Some people do it. Our guest Meagan Butler is one of those doer types. Meagan called in from Australia to share with us her story of ambition, resilience, and human connection as well as the lessons she has learned while riding all over the world by bicycle. An average girl from a typical Australian family, Meagan has done what many deem insane or impossible… she has biked across the US, around third-world countries, and done it at times, completely alone. A deeply passionate philanthropist, Meags has taken her biking experiences and environmental education and is now helping others discover the empowering effect of cycling. We've reached kidical mass. There has been a shift in the way we raise our kids here in AMERICA. Kids should be loved and adored. They should play with their parent’s iPhones from infancy lest they get behind the ever-changing technology. Preschool isn’t for four-year-olds anymore… a child should be potty-trained as quickly as possible so they can join the ranks of two-year-olds being marched into their educational careers before they can complete full sentences. Unstructured play? Weekends spent unplugged and out of wifi range in nature? Being let loose around the neighborhood with friends? Cardboard boxes that turn into space ships and pirate ships and cruise ships? Nah. That’s old school. And it is dangerous. Sound about right? As technology and social expectations have increasingly dictated parenting choices over the decades, kids being allowed to just be kids has become something of an anomaly. But there are parents out there who get the importance of giving their kids a skill-set that is as mentally healthy as it is physically, as challenging as it is rewarding, and as character building as it is community driven… enter things like cycling. In this episode of the Roam Rydes podcast I had the pleasure of getting to know four young girls whose families are part of a growing community of people either holding on to family traditions that embrace the outdoors – or are making a conscious effort to allow their kids the fresh air and freedom to be active and daring in the beautiful backdrop of nature. In a time period when cycling amongst children has been dropping at an alarming rate, and when young girls are socially encouraged to be preoccupied more with their looks and their cool factor than ever before, there are exceptions to the norms – talented and adventurous young girls who aren’t afraid to take a bump or a bruise in the name of fun. Eva, Ellie, Cate and Macy are some of these exceptions… and they are exceptional to boot. As always, it is my hope that this podcast strikes a chord with our listeners. And I hope with this strike, our fans will start taking a good hard look at their cycling communities and whether or not there is anything being done to support kids getting on bikes. If not... let's do something! Roam Rydes Podcast | Episodes RSS Gianna and Steph...the ultimate thrivers. There are people out there who have overcome incredible life setbacks... and then there are people like Stephanie Hathaway who don't just overcome adversity, they conquer it. A week ago my life was different. I shall now refer to this time period (lasting from birth through the last 29 years and 9 months) as PS, or Pre-Steph, because thats how much a single conversation changed my life. I'm hoping that the thirteen minutes I was able to procure from my conversation with Steph over a cup of coffee is enough to do justice to this woman's story of survivorship. If one were to discount Steph's diagnosis and battle with breast cancer, her life is still pretty dang impressive and inspiring. World traveling, adventure racing, teaching little kids ABCs and 123s... all while being a part of a movement of women utilizing the outdoors in an ambitious pursuit of positive change. Having spent a whopping two hours in the presence of this woman, I think I can say with some certainty that Stephanie is the kind of person who is the life of the party. She most likely see's things not just in a glass half-full kind of way, but in a, this sucka is overflowing with awesomeness kind of way. She exudes positive energy and has a smile that radiates with kindness, joy, and a hint of overcoming unimaginable loss with her spirit still intact. Steph represents everything Roam Rydes is all about...and we are absolutely thrilled to share her story. Feeling inspired by Stephanie? Check out the Peak Foundation, an organization that Stephanie is involved with and feels passionately about. About the Peak Foundation: " We organize global mountain based challenges and events for women who seek adventure, a sense of personal achievement, and an opportunity to make a positive difference in the world." http://www.peaksfoundation.org/ ***SPOILER ALERT*** & PODCAST AMENDMENT I was informed that Gianna passed away February 28th 2014, not March 1st as I reported. Technically it was March 1st in Nepal, so Stephanie is lucky enough to have two days to honor Gianna.…
Roam Rydes Podcast | Episodes RSS Finding a good friend can sometimes feel like winning the lottery. Or at least that's what it felt like for me when I met Kelly. Not only does she wrench on bikes as a mechanic...she loves to mountain bike...and she is all-around an incredibly fun, funny, and friggin' smart woman. The kind of person I like to be around in hopes some of those awesome qualities rub off. Kelly and I spend the vast majority of our time over the phone and in-person talking about bikes. Surprise, surprise. Kelly, like me, is opinionated, hopeful, and ambitious about the progression of women in cycling. We were chatting about ideas for the next Roam Rydes podcast when it struck me - Kelly is exactly the kind of person I was looking to interview for the next episode. Our official "podcast" convo lasted nearly two hours...and due to time constraints, I had to hack away at it to get to the core of what this particular episode is about - bike shops. Roam Rydes Podcast | Episodes RSS Van life is so sweet. For weeks I have been following whatever whim happens to strike me, zigzagging up and down the coast of California in the pursuit of adventure, new friends, and quality time with the folks I hold near and dear to my heart. I’ve had the unique advantage of time – total unadulterated, unobligated, unplanned time, to decide what the hell to do with my life. When you have no obligations, what exactly does drive you to get up in the morning, gulp down that savory cup of joe, and head out into the great big world? Over the past few weeks this answer has become crystal clear – bikes. I’ve packed up and driven hours out of my way to seek out a trailhead, I’ve stayed a week longer in an area just to catch a rad group of riders on a weekend get-together, I’ve eagerly geared up to ride in an effort to release the emotional turmoil of losing a loved one, and I’ve simmered in the bliss of hours upon hours of riding. It is safe to say I do not have an addictive personality, and yet I can’t shake this obsession with bicycles. When I set out to start another blog, it was a pretty low-key and self-explanatory endeavor. Travel in a van. Write about it… But as this week’s Roam Rydes podcast indicates, things are a-changin’! No longer is Roam Rydes a catchy title for a plog (podcast+blog) – we (yes we) are very excited to announce a new chapter in the significantly short life of Roam Rydes. From here on out, Roam Rydes will be a community, a tribe, and an organization dedicated to the advocacy and promotion of women who ride. This will be brought to you by yours truly, and an equally bike-obsessed East Coaster and friend Kelly McCrea. I know some of you might be wondering, “what about the van life?” and rest assured, I will continue to keep ya’ll updated throughout future plogs on how Rowdy is doing, but now you get the added benefit of learning all about women’s bike culture!
