×5 Things You Didn’t Know You Could Do With Quizlet – Ep. 1 by Shannon Gunn at https://elearningpod.wordpress.com Download the podcast episode here: http://ia801508.us.archive.org/9/items/quizlet_tips/quizlet_tips.mp3 Quizlet has become an amazing resource for teaching this year. Quizlet , for those of you who are not familiar, is an online website that allows you to create an account, input vocabulary words, and then generate various items such as games and quizzes from that vocabulary list. In this episode, I will demonstrate five new ideas about how you can use Quizlet to help your students learn. 1. Embed Your Flashcards into your Website This is relatively simple and effective for teaching vocabulary. Basically, you can flip through these cards as a way to review material as class begins. The font is large so it works really well on a projected screen. Also, when you turn on the audio, the students tend to listen. Here’s how to embed a quizlet flash card on your school or personal website: (click on the image to make it bigger) As an extension, you can embed the scatter game, the space race game, a test, all kinds of great stuff! You can embed any of its games into your website by just copying and pasting the embed code! Also, you can embed other peoples’ sets as well. 2. Copy and Duplicate Quizlet Sets One of the really great things about Quizlet is the ability to copy and combine sets. I create the mini set for each day’s worth of instruction as I go through the unit, then I combine them all together for the test set. Then, I can take all the test sets and combine them together for the Final Exam set. Another extension of the “copy set” feature is the ability to copy other peoples’ quizlets. For instance, I have to teach a high school financial literacy class that has a test at the end called the “W!SE Test for Financial Literacy.” Search “W!SE” in quizlet and not only will you find other vocabulary sets for the W!SE test! I even found one W!SE set that had pictures attached, which is really helpful for the English Language Learners. I found sets that were all-encompassing, and then I also found mini-sets on each topic. I can copy another set into my account, then add or subtract to it, and then combine it with another one of my own. You can turn off the “copy” feature for any of your sets. My assumption is, unless someone turns off that feature, they are ok if you copy it. Other teachers in my school copy my sets all the time, add and subtract from it, and then use it on their own websites. We are all in this together to help our students learn. Here’s how to copy a set: You can do this for other peoples’ sets as well, as long as it is enabled for “copy.” Here’s how to combine sets: 3. Use Quizlet for Exam Question Review One nice way you can review for a test is to put review questions in one field and the answers in the other field. Then project the flashcards with the test questions on it and flip it for the answer. Here is the behind the scenes of how to make flashcard test questions for exam review. 4. Create A Memory Game from Quizlet Words! This was a great activity for reviewing a large amount of words. I simply printed the Quizlet words on ready-to-pull-apart business card paper I bought at the dollar store. I bought 1 pack for $1, printed the cards out, and the students popped each page apart for me. Each page has 5 words on it, so each memory board set had 5 terms. Students paired up and then practiced playing the “Memory” game with the terms and definitions. Once they had gone through one set, they went to another unused set. This way each group of two students got through about 3 or 4 sets of vocab. Because the words were organized by topic in my original listing, each memory game set was of a similar theme. The kids loved it! We had 77 terms for the investing vocabulary and they were really overwhelmed. Breaking it down into sets of 5 (or 10 for the high achievers) made that list of words really easy to digest in chunks. They came away from it feeling much more confident on their vocabulary. Here’s how to print a set for business cards. Just buy a pack of business card paper from the dollar store and put it in the printer. It will line up, don’t worry. Usually the cards have a design on one side and blank white on the other. Print on the white side. To play the game of memory: place all the cards down on the table in two rows of five with the colored side up. Player one flips two cards. If they match, they get to keep it. If they don’t match, flip them back over. Player two flips two cards. If they match, they get to keep it. If they don’t match, flip it back over. The key is to try to remember where the term and definitions are so you can get the most amount of matches as you go along. It’s fun and the kids love it! 5. Quizlet Carousel Game Below you will find directions on how to create a game called “Carousel” using a quizlet vocabulary set. Print the Quizlet set out in the small strips format. Cut strips out, keeping all the definitions together. Divide the class into two groups. Form a big circle and a little circle with students facing each other (or a long line, if you don’t have room.) Partner up. Give each student on the inside a definition. Have the inside students state the definition, and the other side guesses the term that matches their partner’s definition. Then pass the definitions down one to the left. Read and repeat. This will take some facilitation from the teacher to tell everyone to stop, read, when to pass down, etc. It’s a bit noisy but it’s very effective! This gets students up and talking to each other in a productive and fun environment! Students will come away really remembering the terms and enjoy the process of reviewing it. Here’s how to print in the small strips: Click here to see the YouTube for this post: https://youtu.be/zWJzjodrwBI I hope this has been helpful to you!
